A Dog Owner's Checklist: Taking the Best Care of Your Pet

No, I did not write this, but I do approve this message. Second writing in a week courtesy of Maggie Hammond, proud momma to two littles and one too many furry friends. Passionate about alternative medicine, the great outdoors and animal welfare.
*********************************

A dog easily and quickly becomes a key part of your life. Due to the long lifespan of dogs,
they will always be seen as additional family members for any household which has raised
and loved one. Dogs provide an abundance of positives, including a reason to maintain a
healthy lifestyle, love and devotion and simply a warm greeting when you arrive home from
an arduous day.

With this in mind, taking the best care of your dog is the least you can do in return. Here are
some of the key methods you can do so.

  • Find a Dependable Vet

While all veterinary practices maintain devotion to caring for your dog in the best possible
way, sometimes it may be that you simply don’t feel confident within a particular place.

Perhaps your dog reacts badly to one veterinary office compared to another, or maybe you
prefer the layout of an alternative vet you have visited.

Don’t compromise on the needs and comfort of both you and your dog, and make sure you
take the time to find the best vet for your circumstances and location, in which you can feel
comfortable and confident, such as Cherry Hill vets who offer a variety of high-quality
services, too.

  • Plan an Enjoyable Walking Route

No matter where you live with your dog, whether it’s a bustling city centre, on the outskirts of
a small town or a rural retreat, knowing precisely where you can get the best exercise for
your dog is paramount. Having a planned route means you always know where you’re going
and helps your dog to become familiar with its routine.

The best routes to plan include a place where you can let your dog comfortably off the lead
to have an adequate run, and where you can play with your dog, such as a large park or
field. Understandably, not all locations allow for this (such as busy city centers ) so it’s
important to check for the best routes near you which permit dog walking.

  • Take the Time to Train Your Dog

In order to get the best out of your relationship with one another, dogs need to be taught to
understand acceptable behaviors and how to best deal with certain situations. Training your
dog as soon as possible – ideally from an early age if you are raising a puppy – means your
dog will be capable of understanding important commands, such as when to come when
called.

Lack of training can lead to difficult and reckless behaviors in dogs, as well as confusion
over authority.

  • Engage in Routine Care

No matter the breed or size of your dog, routine care should always include the following:

  • Regular grooming, washing and brushing
  • Dental care, with special attention paid to gums, as well as providing dental chews
  • Nail clipping
  • Flea treatment
  • Worming treatment
  • Regular vaccinations
  • Routine checkups

If you are ever uncertain about the right procedures for routine care or if you are having
trouble administrating certain treatments such as flea products or nail trimming, you should
always consult your veterinarian and ask for assistance – they will be happy to help.

How to Protect Yourself & Your Child During Pregnancy and Birth

Happy Wednesday that I thought was Tuesday and I could actually use an extra work day this week so not cool. I'm sure the title gave away that this is a guest post, and it's from Maggie Hammond, proud momma to two littles and one too many furry friends. Passionate about alternative medicine, the great outdoors and animal welfare.
*********************************

Every new mom will want to protect their child, from the minute they find out about their pregnancy. This also includes best caring for yourself in order to be the strongest and healthiest you can be during your pregnancy term and for the birth of your new bundle of joy. During pregnancy, you may face a host of challenges and fears, and nobody can say how easily you will handle the process. What matters is that you take whatever steps you can to protect both you and your baby.

Make the Healthiest Choices
Maintaining a balanced diet is one of the best things you can do for both you and your baby during pregnancy. A balanced diet means a wide variety of food, including fish, meat, eggs, fruit and vegetables, and staying hydrated.

Not only is a healthy lifestyle essential for you and your baby as a base need, but it can also help to limit the risk of birth defects and complications. By adopting healthier behaviors, you’re increasing the chance of giving birth to a healthy baby.

However, it’s important to note that – despite your best efforts – a healthy baby isn’t always guaranteed. Conditions such as cerebral palsy can be unavoidable in terms of no clear prevention methods. To best protect your baby in this circumstance, your medical professionals need to detect early and take risk-reducing measures. In cases where this has failed to be done, you have every right for cerebral palsy claims against medical negligence.

Take the Relevant Vitamins
Your doctor will be able to recommend the right vitamins needed during the course of your pregnancy, but folic acid is of huge importance in terms of preventing problems in your baby. You can take folic acid before you get pregnant if you have decided to try for a baby in order to best prepare your body, and it should be taken every day.

This is the main vitamin to focus on during pregnancy, but you can consult with your medical advisor regarding any other vitamins.

Exercise Regularly
It’s easy to think that lots of rest and avoidance of over-exertion is essential for the safety of you and your baby, but that’s not the case. It’s, of course, important not to strain yourself during pregnancy, but regular exercise is crucial for health purposes. Find an exercise that is comfortable for you, and be sure not to overdo it.

While exercise is important during pregnancy, the best options will be ones that avoid contact or the risk of falling, therefore stretching such as yoga or leisurely walking is better than contact sports.

Arrange a Stress-Free Environment to Give Birth
In order to encourage the healthiest, most natural birth, you need to make the environment right for you. Stress can serve to disrupt the natural birthing procedure and a build-up of anxiety will cause more harm than good. Decide where you would feel most comfortable giving birth, at home or in the hospital, and ensure the environment is optimized for your comfort and needs, which you have every right to.

Never be too busy for your parents

Happy Friday! I've written about aging parents and grandparents before, and my friend Sarah was inspired by that post to expand a little so is here today to do the same. Friends, I often have space on a Friday - if you are polishing your writing chops or have something to say or are trying to get into freelance writing and want some exposure and want to submit a post, email me! Have a great weekend!

*************
via

You're busy, we're busy, I'm busy, we get it...people are busy. It can be difficult to find the right amount of hours in a day to do everything you need to do. There will be times when your needs will have to come first. But please don't be too busy to care for your aging parents, for a number of reasons, including...

They cared for you

Growing up isn't easy, but if you are one of the lucky ones, you had your parents to help you along the way. When you cried as a baby, they held you in their arms. When you stumbled when making your first steps, they picked you back up and guided you on your way. They gave you moral support on your first day of school, celebrated your birthdays, gave you lifts to the places where you needed to be, and they listened to you whenever you needed to talk. They cared for you, and as time passes and they need you to care for them, it's the circle of life and it shouldn't be broken.

They might feel lonely

How many people do you have in your life? From your children to your friends to your coworkers, you might have so much social company you don't consider those who don't. If they aren't able to get around because of their advancing years, your parents might not have the means to see many people. As they get older, they will also see their friendships diminish when age finally defeats their peers. And the problem is compounded if you only have one parent living today, as they won't have that other person to lift them up when they get down. So give them a call, chat with them on Skype, or pay them a visit today.

Their health could be failing

With age comes deteriorating health, and it is something we all have to face up to, including when it's our parents. If you haven't visited them in a long time, you might not have noticed the fact that they are having difficulty hearing. You might not have realized that they aren't as mobile as they used to be. And if they haven't called you, it might be because they have forgotten, not because they don't care, but because their memory is no longer what it once was. So, make every effort to visit them. They might need medical care, and if they aren't able to find it themselves, you will need to do it for them.

They might be in trouble

Older people are vulnerable, and there could be people threatening to do them some kind of harm: door-to-door scammers, cold callers who can easily take advantage of the elderly...you would never know if you didn't speak to your parents. You might need to guide them on elderly fraud scams or check their financial situation and find legal help if they have been scammed. And while we hope this would never be your parent's situation, if they are currently in a nursing or care home, they might also need you to look for nursing home abuse attorneys with proven results if they have been neglected in any way.

And so…

Never be too busy to care for your aging parents. In all kinds of ways, they might need you around. And besides, while you may be out of short pants and living an adult life, your parents still have a ton to offer you too, be that moral support, a listening ear, and a hug that will do you both a world of good today.

Make the time!

Reflecting on life as I start my 64th year

Obviously I'm not starting my 64th year (that is obvious, right?!), but my mom is as her birthday was last week and this post is from her.
******************

In a million years, I never thought---

-I’d wear loose, long, maternity-type tops and let my bra straps show!  Big no-no years ago!

-I'd take (thanks iphone camera) and have (thanks Snapfish) so many pictures! Over 8,300 pictures and over 1,300 videos on my phone mostly of grandchickens that I send to their parents when they are with me and look back at them when the kids are not with me and I miss them!! Also many furry kid pictures, too! I am in the process of sorting pictures for all of our kids and extended families for them or for upcoming events that require picture boards. It takes forever, but #everypicturetellsastory, so it’s nice!

-We’d buy water! We have filtered water in our fridge, but we still buy water. And that so many people and so much money is spent on buying coffee, too!!! Hashtag GOLDMINE

-I would be able to compile my favorite songs and ask Alexa to play them AND request songs on a whim for grandchicken dance parties!!

-I'd have heated seats and push button starts on cars! And Tiles and a phone app to find the key fob when some people lose theirs 50 million times! Also- GPS, DVD players, Apple car play!

-The cell phone and internet - a little computer and camera and KIT-er right in my hand and the internet, social media for letting me communicate with people all over the world and expose injustice!!! The phone apps!! Just amazing!

-I’d feel such absolute joy and love for our four grandchickens - 2 pictured - 2 social media shy. It is, by far, the best and most beautiful love ever! Bonding with them is priceless. Being the oldest of six and I was 13 when my mom had triplets and almost 21 when I had my Stephanie, I have been around and cared for babies forever, it seems, BUT, this love is like no other! I was fortunate to spend a lot of time with my maternal grandparents who thought the sun rose and set on me. I also witnessed my own kids with their grandparents and my Stephanie with her great grandmother was really awesome!!! All you have to do is love them!!!

There is much more, I am sure, but I chose to focus on good stuff! I send healing lights and love and angels to all and may all of our free will choices be for the highest good! Be kind! Be grateful!
Thanks to the universe for our wonderful lives!!!

LOVE.  STEPH'S.  MOMMA!!!

Dealing With Grumpy, Hormonal Teens Calmly and Coolly

Happy Friday, happy summer solstice! What's the surest way to know I have a guest writer, class? When the post is about kids - when I allow guest posts it's usually to cover topics I don't or to give friends some space. I love some kids, but writing about them is not my lane. My friend Jessie from across the pond is picking up my chosen Friday slack today to talk about parenting teens going through hormonal changes, also known as a portion of my life I am happy to never have to live again. Enjoy the read and enjoy the weekend!
                                                   ******************

It was bound to happen one day: your sweet little angel has turned into a stroppy teenager. They no longer want to cuddle with you on the couch in the evenings. Now they lock themselves in their rooms and exchange the odd grunt and groan at the dinner table. As your children are getting older it can be very difficult to deal with their changes in behavior. You want to know about every single thing going on in their life, but they seem like a closed book to you. As a parent, you need to understand that their behavior is no reflection on you. Teenagers go through hormonal changes at a rapid rate, which mean their mood swings are out of control. You need to learn how to deal with these sudden changes in emotion so you don’t encroach on their privacy too much, but you are still protecting them. Here are some useful techniques that might help you to deal with your grumpy and hormonal teenager in a calm and cool manner.

Keeping an Eye on Their Online Activity
As your teenagers grow more and more distant parents in this day and age start to wonder what they are getting up to online. Your teen probably has their own mobile phone, computer or tablet, so you want to keep an eye on their online activity. With an android parental control app you can have peace of mind that your youngster is totally safe online. You can track where they are, the websites they are visiting, and their text messages. Of course you don’t want to invade their privacy completely, but this will help you to relax a little bit as your trust grows stronger and stronger.

Respect Their Space
Believe it or not, teenagers love their own company - they're learning who they are and need some space to do so. As much as you want to chat to them all night long about how their day was, they probably just want to play computer games or read a book or watch the latest reality television program. At times like this, you need to respect their space and give them the privacy they need. If you start becoming too overbearing they will only push you away even more.

Open Up the Lines of Communication
Having a chat and opening up with your teen helps you to check in with how they are feeling. Although they might be totally reluctant to express their emotions, you can gauge how they're doing by their actions a lot of the time. If you are ever worried about the health or safety of your child you should definitely seek out the advice of a professional. Sometimes distant behavior can lead to worse scenarios, so keep an eye on them if you can.

Don’t Take Things Personally
When your child doesn’t want to talk to you or open up, try not to take it too personally. To them, parents are pretty embarrassing and they would rather keep you in the background when their friends are around. They will soon grow out of this way of thinking and you will have them back in your arms in no time.

Allow Them to Grow Up
When it comes to raising a teenager, there is no right or wrong answer. You need to allow them to spread their wings in their own time without being too overbearing. Assess your teen as an individual and you will soon get to grips with how you need to respond as their parent.

As you raise your children you will start to discover that they are completely different to each other. Your best friend might have had the smoothest journey with their teenager, but you could have had the rockiest ride ever. Now you know that everybody’s experience is unique to them, so you will never be able to compare and contrast the two. Deal with your teenager in a way that feels right for you personally. If it is important for you to monitor their online safety, you should take special measures to do so. If you think it is more useful to give them space, do that. You know your child better than anybody else so you will know how to handle each situation as it arises. Raising grumpy and hormonal teenagers will never be easy, but you can get through even the darkest days with a little bit of positivity and bravery.

Does My Tech Career Count?

Happy Friday friends! I'm off today and know you'll enjoy this piece from my friend of nearly 20 years, Shelby. Shelby Cohen is a former food critic for the Watertown Daily Times and the blogger behind Big Hungry Shelby, an Upstate New York food blog that promotes mom and pop restaurants and the shunning of Red Lobster. She has a degree in communication from Geneseo State University and has worked in public relations for the defense industry for 20 years.
                                             ************************

For the majority of my 20 year career in public relations, I have worked in the defense industry. But I’m no STEM whiz. Ironically, I failed my math final exam in the tenth grade, necessitating summer school to maintain my honor roll standing and grade point average. In college, the panic attacks triggered by math class were so severe, I would have to leave the room. I wasn’t what anyone would call a good STEM student.

STEM – or science, technology, engineering, and mathematics – is a buzzy educational term these days, particularly for girls. Because young women typically begin to fall behind in these subjects in middle school – opting for fields of study in the softer disciplines of English, history, art, or music – a huge effort has been mounted in the last decade to encourage their participation in them.

The fact is, tech companies can’t hire enough women engineers and computing professionals because just not enough women stick with these subjects in school. That, in turn, means these companies struggle to meet diversity numbers, and wage gaps and gender bias persist over time due to a lack of female candidates in the talent pool. The issue is more complex even than all that, of course: don’t get me started on what happens to women when they begin families, and how that effects c-suite diversity metrics down the stream.

When I was in school in the 90s, there were no STEM programs; no corporations investing in my public school to inspire my interest in math or science, and even if there had been, I suspect I still would have gravitated towards those softer disciplines. Words have always made sense to me – numbers, not quite so much. So while I thrived in AP English and was thrilled to discover there was a career in which I could use words to change other peoples’ minds and influence consumers, I drifted further and further from interest in those STEM subjects.

Yet, at just 23, I began working for the largest defense contractor in the nation. I was writing articles about planes with enormous gun barrels mounted on their noses and electronic warfare systems that gave American soldiers the ability to distinguish friends from foes on modern battlefields, and working with some of the most brilliant engineering minds on the planet. It was my job to understand what they did and turn the tech into digestible information for everyday folks. All these years later, and for another company, I work with reporters from outlets like Aviation Week to explain how advanced flight controls can ensure a pilot knows what commands his co-pilot is giving their aircraft and vice versa, and, yes, write and edit articles about how important STEM education is in our schools.

Most tech companies need people like me – non-technical professionals – to keep their doors open. We’re financial wizards, organizational nerds, human resources experts, and contracts nitpickers. In my company, they call what we do support functions, because the communications team, along with those other departments, enable the engineers to invent, develop, produce, and sell. But even though we’re not engineers, we’re completely steeped in the innovation taking place inside our walls. There are hundreds of people who work for my company who can’t figure out the tip at the end of a team dinner, but have high-paying jobs in one of the biggest high-tech organizations in the world.

You know Kristen Wiig’s character in The Martian, incredulous when her colleagues name a secret meeting after a scene in The Lord of the Rings? That kind of interaction is a regular occurrence for me. But despite the fact that I am not an engineer, I very much have a successful career in technology that has allowed me to meet presidential candidates, collaborate with Oscar-winning film directors, fly on helicopters, and travel the world.

My job requires me to understand our products enough to educate the masses about why they’re beneficial for our military. No, I don’t understand how the chip inside a single board computer is designed or built, but you better believe I have to know what it does once it’s orbiting earth in a satellite. This is not work the village idiot is qualified to accomplish. Still, by most peoples’ standards, I would not be considered a woman in technology. It’s time to change that perception, especially if we want to prepare our children for the workplace of the future.

Let’s open our apertures on what it means to work in the careers of tomorrow. Yes, we need more girls to follow STEM paths, if that’s where their talents lie. But let’s be careful not to deliver that message at the exclusion of the notion that literature, art, sociology, history, and music have value and a place in the job market.

That girl who always talks to her neighbor during the lesson could be Google’s vice president of human resources in 25 years, and that boy who flunks every bio lab experiment because giving his frog a funeral makes more sense to him than the scientific process may be the business development exec for whom Boeing will be searching in a decade or so. As a society, we tend to latch onto ideas like, “STEM = Good,” abandoning a wider view, such as that a student who excels in art could become the graphic designer who heads up the ad campaign that propels the next big social media giant into the hearts of consumers.

Of course educating our young people in these disciplines is important, but there always will be more than one path to success, and I worry than the predominance of STEM messaging makes kids who just aren’t meant for those subjects feel less than. It’s simply not true that science and math are the only keys to unlocking a career in tech.

I’m living proof: you can have a successful career in a thriving technology industry even if you failed your Math II final.

Happy weekend!

Top Five of the Thirties, Frank Style

Taken yesterday, July 28
If it's Friday and you know it, clap your hands. Clap clap. The humidity has seeped into my brain. Today is our BFF Frank's 39th birthday! Happy birthday Fronk. Every year, Frank is gracious enough to do a birthday guest blog for me (see 2015, 2014, 2013). This year I asked for it at the last second because I forgot it was the last week of July until Tuesday. A clear case of mind vacation, an affliction common in summer months. I told him to just consider himself on retainer for a July 29 blog every year in case I have brain slippage again, which is probable. Regardless, Frank pulled through for me as he always does, and this is this year's guest birthday blog.

**********************************************
Today I turn 39 and enter my last year of a pretty incredible decade. I read Steph’s blog earlier this week about this topic and I agreed with everything that she said, especially the highest of highs and lowest of lows. My 30s have changed me in so many ways that the list would be way too long for this post. I am happy to say that these changes have led me to finally feel like the man I always hoped I would be when I was slogging through my 20s. I love a good top five list so here are my five favorite moments from my 30s:

5.  Joining the Fralinger String Band. This was a huge life change for me that I knew was going to hurt a lot of feelings but it has done so much for my confidence and my talent that is has been more than worth it.
4. Road Trip to Chicago (aka my 2nd date with Amanda).  Everyone thought we were nuts but our trip had it all. From the never ending conversation, to exploring a great city, and ending with Pearl Jam. I knew it was the beginning of something special.

 3.  My Honeymoon. Without a doubt the best trip of my life. We stayed at Excellence Riviera Cancun with upgraded VIP accommodations. It was a perfect end to an avalanche of love that we received during our wedding. (I will admit to crying when we had to leave).

2. My Wedding. I had never in my life had a weekend that was perfect until that weekend.  Our family and friends went well above and beyond anything that we could imagine to make that weekend what it was. If you were there you know! I have never felt that much love directed at me and to share it with the love of my life was overwhelming. (editor's note: true story, it was fun and full of love)
1. Becoming a Father.  Due to circumstances that led to Eva having to be born two months early I cannot say that the night she was born was my favorite. I have never been more scared of anything in my life. That said, being her father is the best thing that I have ever done in my life. I had a vision of the man I wanted to be, like I am sure we all do in our 20s, and Eva has made that vision finally become reality but well beyond what I thought it could be.
So there it is. I know it's long but if you know me I am sure you aren’t surprised!  Thank you Steph for letting me do this.

                                                     ****************
No, thank YOU, my friend, for your guest blog every year. And happy last year in our 30s!

Wouldn't it be nice

Many of you also get a kick out of my mom's comments that she leaves here. She guest posts from time to time too. Like today. Happy Friday, happy weekend. Enjoy!
***************************************************************************

Greetings!
I asked my Stephanie if I could do some guest blogs since so many things pop into my head.

This series is Wouldn’t It Be Nice from a 60-year-old’s personal perspective. I was going to have a theme for each post, but so much more entertaining to go with what pops into my head!

This list written 7-4-2016 morning poolside!

1) If Merle Reagle the crossword guy, could send Sunday crosswords from the other side. He is my favorite and also my mom’s. NY Times is ok, but Merle is the best.

2) If my thighs would never rub together for obvious reasons!

3) If my prescription sunglasses had pop out lenses and different colored frames to match my mood! Before prescriptions, I had a field day with sunglasses from the $ store. I am very careful with the prescription glasses, since they are an arm and a leg! There are always pros and cons to everything.

4) If dog hair and their bodily functions evaporated upon release or if poop at least was fluorescent so I could always find it.

5) If our healing ocean oasis saltwater pool could have a removable glass enclosed heated dome like thing to enjoy all year round!

6) If all of our homes could be solar-powered and if everyone could have a home!  There’s no place like home!

7)  If my hair manes were mass produced and sold in $ stores. Our Debbie said Amazon has them for $15! Ever since my Stephanie threatened to confiscate my hair manes and I hid some and now I cannot find them, I am a bit facakted!

8) If I had a thicker head of hair that grew quickly and I could have a ponytail which would lessen my use of the hair manes. Do not ever complain that your hair is too thick! Never take you hair for granted.

9) If the walls or anything that needed painting would automatically repaint themselves when necessary.

10)  If flowers bloomed all year round where I live! Especially lily of the valley, tulips, daffodils, hyacinth, lilies, hibiscus, roses, etc!

Volume 1 is done and I had fun.

Lights and angels and love from Steph’s Momma  aka Poopsie

Jill's Top Five Sunless Tanners

Just in time for my friends who are interested in some tanning without sun, my great friend and personal product guru Jill, a professional makeup artist and cosmetology educator at PB Beauty School in NJ, is back today for her monthly post. Beauty is her passion and she's gracious enough to stop by here once a month to share her knowledge and favorites with us.

                                                  **********************
Hey all, I am back! Let's talk about sunless tanners. Summer is here and as we all know it can take a few beach days to get the right summer glow on our winter skin. So, before we get that perfect base tan it's nice to have an alternative. These are my Top 5 recommendations for at home bronzing.

5.) Sally Hansen-Salon Airbrush Legs - This stuff is so easy to use and is a Hollywood secret: celebrities like the Kardashians have been rumored to use this inexpensive product. It is a simple spray and is available in several shades. They recommend spraying it into your hand first then applying to your legs, however I always spray directly onto my legs and have no problems. One of the best things about this product is it is water resistant and non transferable. That being said you can sit on all the white sofas you want and wear all the white shorts in your closet. This stuff stays on you, not on them. I have seen this as low as $4.99 at Walmart up to $12.99 at Ulta.
4.) Lorac selfTANtalizer Body Bronzing Gradual Self Tanner- I am a big fan of  Lorac TANtilizer Bronzer. It is one of my all time favorites. So when they came out with this I had to try it. It absolutely is an awesome solution to pale winter skin. This however takes a bit more skill to apply than the above mentioned. It can be a tad streaky if not rubbed in well. However it comes with a mitt to use to smooth the product over the (already clean) desired area. That helps to ensure that the product is evenly spread and you do not get oompa loompa hands in the process. This product comes in at $34.00 but I can tell you a little bit goes along way.
3.) Tan Towel Self Tanning Towelette Full Body Application for Face and Body - I wish I had invented this. It is a genius way to tan at home and is very simple to use. The towelettes are 9x12 so they are quite large and they create a streak free application. They are available in Classic which is  light to medium and the "Plus" which is for medium to dark. It reaches its fullest tanning potential within 2-4 hrs after the application. Your skin tone will get deeper after each application. Each box comes with 5 towelettes and it's available at Ulta for $27.00.

2.) St.Tropez- This line of products is a little pricey but worth every penny. It has to be one of the top products I have ever used. The line has a variety of products from gradual shower tanners to airbrush application. I personally like their Bronzing Mousse which can be purchased at Ulta for for $18-$42 depending on the bottle size. It is smooth and again can be easy to apply with the included applicator mitt. This just takes a little more caution when applying so your tan is streak free. I would recommend their award winning Glow Kit. This kit was one of Allure Best of Beauty award winners. It includes the Express Bronzing Mousse, the application mitt, and the Gradual Tan In Shower Tanning Lotion. This kit is available at Sephora for $50.00.

1.) Fake Bake - Last but not least my absolute #1 sunless tanner is Fake Bake Airbrush Instant Self-Tan. I buy this stuff two to three cans at a time. I started using this back in my JWOWW Jersey Shore phase and although I have since toned down the amount I use per application I still love it. One of the nice things about this stuff is it has a show where it goes application, so as you spray it you can see where it goes. It doesn't clog pores and it dries in seconds. It progressively deepens within a few hours. This product line has an array of options, but this one is my most recommended. It comes in at $33.00.

I hope everyone enjoys all that summer has to offer and I hope these recommendations help you have that summer glow! Until next time - Stay Beautiful!

A letter from my mother on her 60th birthday week

Many of you also get a kick out of my mom's comments that she leaves here. She guest posts from time to time too, and today in honor of her birthday coming up on Sunday, she free-styled a little letter.

Hello, Everyone!
Guest blogger Steph’s Momma aka Poopsie.

I had a glorious early birthday celebration. I drove myself in our sweet Jetta sportswagen, singing all the way to the cds my Stephanie made me a while ago - prize possessions! Some my requests, but other songs she randomly threw in that are perfect. I am eternally grateful.
merchandise from Blue Eden in Ocean City
Rich and Sean drove together for uninterrupted man talk and a covert mission to pick up the Stock’s birthday cake. I Instagrammed practically the entire awesome weekend.  A picture scrapbook of my life.  I love Instagram!

My material for this guest blog was going to be on a different vein, but in light of the largest mass shooting in USA history, other thoughts came to mind. I always say I don’t want much, only for myself and my people to be safe, happy, and healthy. Safe and sound all the way around. Well, it is a lot to ask for - it’s everything that is important! The universe and the angels and all that be have a very difficult job keeping us all safe and sound. Good Goddess!
I constantly use the angels, lights, and love emojis and surround everyone, everything, everywhere with the lights, especially the white light. The big mother white light!!!  Just do it! It’s free, it’s easy, it becomes automatic. My tweets and instagrams put all of that into the universe every time I use the love and lights and angels emojis. This does not mean nothing “bad” will ever happen, it just puts more good stuff into the universe. Positive instead of negative.

I need a page-a-day calendar to start each new year.  A meaningful page-a-day calendar. I write my daily gratitude list on the back of each day and fold it and put it in a big plastic zip lock. Being grateful, saying affirmations a lot have changed my life for the better. Really, really better. I am not perfect, but now correct myself if I get aggravated and/or complain and immediately concentrate on the positives of the situations. Being angry is bad for your mind, body, and soul.

So I am eternally grateful for the priceless “things” in my life.  Do not ever take one nanosecond for granted.

As I am typing this, my son calls and said he had a blow out on 95 in Delaware. Ruined tire, but he is safe. My sweet little granddaughter went down easily for her second nap of the day. It’s a beautiful day. Our other car is being serviced and we have the VW “bonus” to cover some of that. Thanks to the universe! Always look on the bright side of life!

Love, Steph’s Momma

And a very happy birthday to Michelle today! See you Saturday for breakfast. xoxo

Thursday Thoughts - Things I want my daughter to know

Happiest of birthday eves to one of my BFFs Amanda. She so kindly agreed to share 10 things she wants her daughter Eva the Diva to know. I love both of these ladies and I love this list.

1. There is no purpose or advantage to being a mean girl. Ganging up on or putting other women down does not make you look powerful. It does not build you up in anyway. It does the opposite.

2. A relationship that is constantly making up and breaking up is a cycle that will never end, never improve, and is likely borderline emotional abuse. The drama can become addicting but it will not end the way you want it to. You are not Carrie Bradshaw and he is not Mr. Big.

3. If you ever find yourself in a situation and think, what if no one believes me - your dad and I will always believe you.

4. Surround yourself with friends who have your best interest at heart especially in your weakest, most vulnerable times.

5. I'm your mom, not your friend. We can't be friends until you are a grown woman.

6. The purpose of your 20s is find yourself, make mistakes, and have fun. If you happen to find the person you want to marry in that decade, great. But that should not be your sole purpose in life.
The end of your 20s is not a deadline to find a partner. I met your father one month before I turned 30...after spending my 20s feeling like I needed to be married by 30 (for some reason). It happens when it's supposed to.

7. Have a way to take of yourself. Never be in a position where you have to completely rely on another person. Marriages can end and spouses can die...sad but true.

8. Don't be afraid of confrontations and if someone confronts you don't be intimidated by it.

9. Keep a journal in middle school and high school, it will be a great read for you one day.

10. The hardest thing to overcome is a bad reputation.

What knowledge do you think is important for mothers to impart to their daughters?

Random Inclement Weather Thoughts from the School Pick-Up Line with Jana Says

Today I am lounging around on a hammock on Castaway Cay, Disney's private island. Other activities include a massage on the beach. Hey ohhh. My long-time friend Jana who blogs over at Jana Says is here to pick up my slack today and will be responding to your comments below. Thanks Jana!

For those who don’t know me, I’m Jana. I blog at Jana Says and Steph and I go way, WAY back to our years at the University of Delaware. You might have seen me in some of her Throwback Thursday pictures. We had fun.  Unfortunately, my life isn’t as exciting now as it was back then. In fact, a good portion of my week is devoted to time in my car, driving my daughter to and from places. Including school because she’s afraid of the bus. So each day, I
wastespend a fair amount of time waiting in the school pick-up line.  And I think. Which might or might not be a good thing. I've talked before about some of the thoughts that go through my head but now, with the winter and lots of inclement weather swiftly approaching, I have other thoughts.
 photo inclement-weather_zpseaa8675f.jpg

In the morning
This line is incredibly long and slow moving. Kids need to toughen up and wait for the bus like we had to do.

I really shouldn't criticize the other kids. My kid is just as bad.

I'm glad I remembered to warm up the car this morning. It's freaking cold out.

Is she wearing a warm enough coat? I hope they don't have outdoor recess.

Hey, why isn't that kid wearing a coat at all? Hoodies are not sufficient!!! His mother should know better.

I hate when people don't brush snow off their car. It's not that hard.

WHY ARE THESE PEOPLE TAKING SO LONG?

Oh, finally. We're moving towards the front door.

Where are all the teachers? Aren't they supposed to be supervising?

I guess I can't blame them. It's way too cold out. They can see the kids from the front door.

At least it's not raining/snowing.

I should check the weather to see if it's supposed to rain/snow today.

Oh, look at that. It's supposed to rain/snow.

I hate winter. I need to move somewhere warm.

In the afternoon

I think it's colder out now than it was this morning. I blame the snow.

I'm going to blame the snow for everything bad that happens during the months of December-March because it's really the worst thing ever.

That puddle is way bigger than it was this morning. I hope whichever teacher is walking around with the sign out clipboard doesn't step in it.

I'm glad this parking lot doesn't have huge potholes like the gym parking lot. My wheels would probably fall off. That would suck.

I should learn how to change a tire. But not until the weather is warmer. It's too cold for that shit.

Why do I have 16 pairs of gloves and no scarves? If I could knit, I'd have 86 scarves. I should try knitting again.

Who am I kidding? Knitting is not a skill I will ever possess. I should surrender that fantasy.

What does one do with skeins of yarn? Is that what it's even called? I feel like it needs to be called "big knotted balls of yarn that serve no purpose".

I'm horrible at naming things.

That teacher has a pom pom on top of his hat! I bet someone knitted that for him.

I really need to stop thinking about knitting.

I should probably lower my music before that teacher gets to my car.

Why does Buckcherry's "Crazy Bitch" always play while I'm waiting for the child?

Let's go ahead and skip it today. I don't need these teachers thinking I'm a terrible and inappropriate parent.

WOOHOO! We're moving again!

Why is that teacher waving violently at my car? I'm aware that I have to move up.

Maybe she's doing it to keep warm. If that's the case, I can't fault her.

Okay, she needs to calm down now. My child is buckling her seat belt. Safety first.

OMG, I hate how people drive in the snow/rain.

I hate winter.

I need to move somewhere warm.

Thanks so much to Steph for having me guest post again and Steph, if you're reading, I hope you're enjoying your vacation! When it comes to weight loss, let's go back to basics.

A good Saturday to you, dear reader. A while back I asked people to let me know what they wanted to see on this blog, and one of the answers was fitness stuff. I am not a guru on that, so I went straight to the source, my friend Kathy at Vodka and Soda. Kathy fucking rocks and she's really knowledgeable about fitness, clean eating, and weight loss. She totally kicks ass. And uses the term fitness boner to describe when work out things go awesome so hello you know you'll love her, sickos. So sit back, relax, and enjoy. And follow her on her blog, she's been doing Fitness Fridays. Get your fitness fix from the source.

Hello amazing readers of Life According to Steph! I’m Kathy and I blog over at Vodka and Soda.  I’m a 38 year old mother to an adorable and brilliant 5 year old, a total geek at heart (I work in the IT industry) and an avid lover of all things health and fitness.  Today, Steph was crazy enough to let me take over this space so we’re going to talk about something that gives me a major boner – fitness.  Listen up fast because I’m about to impart some mad wisdom in your faces.
source

It’s the end of January and a lot of people have started weight loss challenges or making positive changes in their lives.  All of this – whether you’re a newbie or a guru – is awesome because any change, no matter how small it is, can make a difference.  And here’s where I get on my soapbox to say what needs to be said:    All that shit you read or hear on the TV/internet about this diet or that diet or juicing or detoxing or whatever – IGNORE IT.  It’s nothing but dumb marketing schemes put out by marketing companies who want nothing but to take your money.  Do not buy into their shit!
In my personal opinion (and experience), when it comes to weight loss, we need to go back to the basics - no fancy blenders or juicers.  No powders or meal replacements or pills.  No diets that cut out major food groups or restrict food consumption.  No food that comes out of a box, bag or can - just the basic stuff:  fresh, wholesome food and exercise.  That’s it.

There is no magic behind weight loss. Nothing that any marketing company can put out on the shelf will make you accelerate or burn fat any faster than your body will allow which is why I say to avoid all those fad diets and crazy machines – your body will burn fat if you return to the basics, make the right choices and exercise.  All you need to do start and then give it time to work.

And carbs – what is with all the demonizing of carbohydrates?  Time and time again, I read about women cutting out carbs because “that’s the reason i can’t lose weight.”  This is one of the biggest misconceptions of all! Carbs are NOT the reason why you can’t lose weight – bad choices are the reasons why one can’t lose weight.   Yes, carbs are caloric dense but are also is a great source of energy.  Cutting out carbs will do nothing but make you feel tired, miserable and crazy.  Our bodies need carbohydrates to function so instead of eating the white, starchy kinds, just select healthy alternatives like sweet potatoes, quinoa or whole grains. Eat them in controlled portions, eat within your caloric range for weight loss and you will lose inches and weight.

The biggest challenge for anyone wanting to lose weight is making the change; the starting point.  You’re now changing the way you eat and changing your daily routine which is instead of sitting on the couch, you get up and exercise. Who said change is easy?  It’s not!  Humans are naturally resistant to change because it’s different from what we do on a daily basis.  We also put too much pressure on ourselves to become fitness gurus or healthy in a couple of weeks when really, it takes at least a month to feel and see the changes.  Did you know that it takes humans on average 4 weeks to form new habits?  This means that we need to repeat an activity at approximately the same time every day for at least 4 weeks in order for it to become a habit.  So give yourself a break; if you’ve just started a healthy change or a new workout program, give yourself time to adjust and adapt.  Be patient.  Go back to the basics of clean eating and exercise.  Most of all, remember that it’s not the outside that only counts but what’s happening on the inside that counts most.

Are you currently working to make a healthy change in your life?
