Unintentional habits

MFD basically loses his shit every time I get out of his car because he swears that I slam the door. I automatically say I don't, but maybe I do. I don't know. If I do, it's not done intentionally. I think he thinks I'm making some sort of statement, but really what I am is in the unintentional habit of slamming doors.

Which of course led me to think about what other unintentional habits I have. Habit has a huge impact on our daily lives, and of course we work on cutting down some that we know to be bad and cultivating some that we believe to be good, but what about the unintentional ones we pick up along the way? Since they're unintentional, I had to think on what others have noticed that I do.

I gravitate to signs in public, designed or scrawled, faded or new. I could waste a ton of travel hours looking at them and taking photos of them.

I say thing too much, in reference to everything. The thing. That thing. You know, things. Things That...

I rub my nose really hard in a circle when I'm tired. Both of my brothers do this too.

I rub my feet together when I'm sitting or just as I'm about to fall asleep.

When making a shopping list, I group things by where I think they would be in a store even if I'm ordering them online or haven't been to that particular store.

I speak conversationally to my dogs in public. I know I do this at home and it's intentional. I had no idea I did this in public until someone along my dog walking route at the shore thought I was talking to them.

What has someone pointed out to you that you've come to realize is an unintentional habit?

  1. Thanks to the universe that you and your brothers still have noses❣️ Ditto on saying thing. Lots of times my people know what I'm referring to, especially our Jane. Dogs are more like people than people! I am going to think on my unintentional things right now.
Also, I would like for people on their posts to stop saying type Yes or Amen if you agree.
That's what the like button is for.
    Happiest Tuesday to all.
    Love. Your. Momma.

  2. Omg, hahaha! The dog one is hilarious. I wouldn't be surprised if I did that, too. And I always baby-talked the dogs but now that we actually have a baby and I'm home with the 3 of them 3 days a week, I find myself talking like that more and more and I really DON'T want to let that become a habit. Fighting it!

  3. I talk to my dogs like they are people all the time. Even Teh German gets confused.
I also group items on my store list. The dry erase list on the fridge is separated into food and not food items and then when I write it down to take to the store, I separate into fresh/meat/dry goods/dairy/etc.

I have a tisking noise I make when I get frustrated that I picked up from Teh German. It annoys me when he does it, and it extra annoys me that I do it. I can't stop. But, it's possibly better than yelling cuss words, the jury is still out on that.

  4. I am guilty of talking to my dogs in public all of the time. One of my dog's names is Lady so I often start talking to her by saying Hey Lady. This of course makes people near you look at you like, are you talking to me? Haha

  7. Speaking of dogs, I have a habit of talking to dogs instead of their owners when I come across them on walks. I completely ignore the person but am all about talking to the pup! Ha ha!

  8. I rub my feet as well before falling asleep and so does my son and my mother. I smash my hand hard against my face when I am tired or fed up with someone or something. My husband calls it the face smush, sounds attractive, huh?!

  9. I group things together by where they are in the store's layout too when making a shopping list, and of course talking to the dog because they're a part of the family too <3

  11. My mom does that with her feet & it drives me INSANE!!!!!
Oh yeah - I have some of the best conversations with my dog.
My brother, when we were growing up, said I used to grunt when I was eating - I never knew i was doing it. Thank GOD that habit stopped.

  13. I sing songs about my cat to my cat. And I have caught myself singing them outside of my apartment as I walk down the street or browse in a store. People probably think I'm nuts.

  14. This is so interesting to think about, I can't think of anything off the top of my head, but I'm sure there are plenty of things I do without realizing it. I need to develop the habit of listing things on my grocery list of where they are in the store.

  15. I do the same thing with grocery lists, but I do it intentionally, hah. Just makes it easier when trying to navigate the tiny aisles, especially in NYC grocery stores.

  16. I have casual conversation with my dog AND my toddler in public and just realized I was doing it out of the house recently...whatever.

  17. My sister who does our grocery shopping goes absolutely NUTS when I don't do the grocery list in order of the store set up. The other day I put ice cream on the list and I put it at the top and she lost her mind. Ice cream is at the end of the store!! I think she is still mad about it days later.

  18. I do the same with my gorcery lists, it makes it so much easier. It is an unintentional habit now. You should hear the conversations I have with my DEAF dog. Talk about unintentional!

  19. I do the grocery list thing but intentionally to make my life easier. I actually know a few nose rubbers lol

Also - i talk to my cat all day. Good thing cats arent social animals or I'd take her with me everywhere lol

  20. This post reminds me of the Everybody Loves Raymond episode where Robert touches the food to his chin before he eats it.

I never realized I did this, but Matt recently pointed out that whenever we're at a restaurant and the server asks if I want a refill on my drink, I say "Sure, I'll have a little." Obviously they always fill the glass all the way up but he said every time he wonders if someone will eventually just fill it "a little." I don't know why I say that!

Matt says I slam the car door too! And whenever we drive someone in my family he says he notices it. We are a family of car door slammers.

  21. I talk to Mac out in public as well. And I have full on conversations with Zoe too. When shopping at the grocery store, I say things like...oh we need to go get some zucchini. Or, I will ask her an open ended question like what do you think? Clearly sounding like I expect an answer. I'm sure I do lots more but I am unaware that I do it...haha

  22. Blue does the foot thing! I call it cricketing (you know, because crickets do that). I slam car doors and order the grocery list according to store layout. I can't think of anything off the top of my head but now I'm curious!

  23. I need help knowing what I unintentionally do because I think there is a lot I probably don't realize.

  24. I rub my feet, too.
Once we started working together, K pointed out that I sigh, loudly and randomly, throughout the day.
I give my dogs choices. K and I both do it. "Do you need to potty or go to bed?" "Do you want food or outside?" "Ball or fox?"
    Lol.

  25. The thing about saying "thing" is me 110%. It drives my husband nuts lol.

  26. My rocking. If I'm standing on line or waiting for something/someone, I rock (sway) back and forth. Most times I don't realize I'm doing it and people will grab my shoulders like, STAAAAAHP! Oh, and my RBF. Apparently it's STRONG in meetings and people tell me after. Oops.

  27. I take two tiny bites of food at once instead of one big bite. My husband pointed this out to me while we were dating...it's still super freakin' weird that he pays that much attention to me. Also, I go "mmmmmm" when eating anything even halfway yummy. My family cracks up at it all the time. And yes, I too am a door slammer (at least according to my FIL).

  28. I think it's great to talk to your dogs. I don't trust people who don't talk to dogs.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Half of my talking is probably directed toward the dogs.

  30. oh my gosh i say thing all the time. i get made fun of at work because i'm constantly like 'the thing' and i'm like you knew what i meant so who cares? i touch my nose or hair a lot when i'm nervous.

  31. When I write a shopping list for hubby I *don't* list things by where they would be in the shop and it drives him mad! He'll get to the end of the list and then see something like "avocado" which would have been at the entrance.
