Praise for them springing fresh from the world

When you work from home at the shore, you can do this before work. Not too bad, right?
This morning at 6:15, I pulled up my leggings and walked into the ocean, sipping coffee and surveying the dawn of a new day. I wandered back and forth at the water's edge until the sun rose just minutes after 7. As I was walking back off the beach, I thought about how all of my life I've described myself as not a morning person, which is not technically true.

Do I like to wake up to someone talking to me as soon as I open my eyes? No. Do I like to wake up and hustle out the door to face a morning commute? No. Do I like to wake up feeling burdened by a to do list? No. Certainly anyone who has ever had the misfortune of trying to enter into conversation with me first thing in the morning would not consider me a morning person. They'd probably consider me a bitchass.

But but but...there are few things I love more than witnessing the dawn of a new day for the simpler reasons like how the sky looks and how quiet it is and for the loftier reasons like all the possibilities and opportunities I can feel spread out before me in the morning. When I give myself time to wake up as the sky wakes up, I am very much a morning person indeed. I love to be up early, alone, drinking coffee and watching the world do its morning stretch...preferably in nature. The don't talk to me don't look at me until I talk to you or look at you morning person. The morning person on my own terms. The morning person with caveats.
It's been a long time since I wrote a blog post off the cuff early in the morning. It's good to exercise that muscle now and again. This has been your last day of the week version of Deep Thoughts...by Jack Handey. Sending good thoughts to all the people in Hurricane Matthew's path. The rest of you, I hope you're feeling Fridaylicious, my friends. Have a great one!

  1. Love it. I am a morning person but my favorite mornings are when I get to witness the sunrise as I run. There's something calming and settling about it. My husband is much like you and he often tells me about scenarios where he has gone about his morning, getting our toddler ready, taking him to school, going to work, going into a meeting and finally about a half hour into said meeting, he is awake. His brain takes a minute or an hour to wake up. I, on the other hand, am ready to tackle the day from the moment my eyes open. Great post and I am jealous you are at the shore. Enjoy!

  2. Such a stunning sunrise. The only time I have any interest in being a morning person (or up early) is when I'm on vacation-- for most of the reasons you mentioned.

  3. I'm pretty sure I have never actively watched a sunrise. Sure, I've driven to work as the sun was rising, but that's fighting traffic and likely cursing the sun for blinding me. I'm not sure what I could see, if anything, from my house, but maybe one day I'll check it out. I'm trying to be more of a morning person but by the end of the week, it's rough.

  4. I love this. I'm the same way. If I have to get up because of work or something, I am the opposite of a morning person. But, let me wake up on my own terms, enjoy my coffee & some alone time...I love mornings then.

  5. This is wonderful, I'm not a super enthusiastic morning person who leaps out of bed, runs 5k, makes a big breakfast and gets to work for 8. But I do really enjoy mornings especially when they're quiet and peaceful and I get to start my day feeling grounded.

  6. When you can ease into a morning, that's when I'm a morning person.
Here's my deep thought for you - how the same ocean that is calm at your feet is tearing apart part of the world down the coast...the powerful thing you are standing in. perspective.

  7. I'm "not a morning person" either. But this summer, my brother asked if I wanted to do the beach with him, my SIL and niece -- and since I'll NEVER say no to anything that involves my goddaughter, I obliged. EVEN THOUGH THEY WANTED TO GO AT 9AM. You see, living on the beach means I can venture down at any time - never rushed, never pressured. I'd go around noon and hang for a few hours with the massive crowds and was content.

But that day, I walked down to the beach at 9 and there wasn't another human in sight aside from my family. The beach was ours. It was quiet and peaceful and serene and just a totally different vibe. It made me regret that I never did that more - and I definitely plan to next summer.

  8. Same- I can't stand being bombarded with people first thing in the morning, but my life is SO much better when I give myself that quiet time to adjust rather than snoozing and snoozing and then starting my day in a rush.

  9. Same thing, I like having some space in the mornings. And what beautiful scenery for the morning.

  10. That picture is amazing. Wish I lived close enough to shore to take a walk every morning like that. Happy Friday.

  11. I wake up early naturally now and while I am not unpleasant in the morning....I like my peace and quiet in the morning to just do what I want at my leisure. If I had to get up and immediately do something I would be a lot angrier. But I leave myself time to putter a few minutes before my workout and I leave time after my workout and shower to spend some time reading blogs and eating breakfast before I start getting ready to walk out the door.

  12. Love those "I just feel like writing right now, so let's see what words come out" posts. Add me to the list of morning people with caveats. Slow wake-ups on my own terms, where every minute of the day ahead is not yet decided and planned out...those, I like. I'm 100% a night person though, if people have to be one or the other, but there is definitely something sweet, special, and unique about peaceful, quiet, on-your-own-terms mornings. And when you live by the beach, there's no doubt that they're extra special.

  13. I would definitely not consider myself a morning person either, but I've been waking up early the past few weeks and I have to admit, I am really liking it. I feel like when it's still dark it's kind of "extra" time and I can either get things done or just sit and read and drink coffee. Then when the sun comes up and the rest of the world wakes up, the actual day begins. I'm a fan of that first dark hour. But, I still don't want to talk to anyone!

  14. Same. I can be a morning person if I can relax and ease into the day the way I want to. Now, I'd have to describe myself as definitely not a night owl...I used to be though.

  15. I like your conditions that ease you into being a morning person. I just don't want anyone to talk to me and expect an answer for at least 30 minutes, preferably one hour.

  16. I am a morning person in that when I'm up, I'm ready to chat and am happy to go about my day. I just don't like to set an alarm . . . my mornings have gotten earlier as I've aged . . . guess that's just what happens after years of getting up to get it done! I like your morning qualifications . . . peace and quiet is a gift.
