Thursday Thoughts - r o c k in the U S A

1. Tired, fearful, and loathing: how we felt about Monday in our house.
2. The skies around the Harvest Moon make my soul burn.

3. Lots of fighting on the internet about what it means to be a patriot in America. Everyone who knows us knows both MFD and I are very liberal. MFD always posts things with political or social implications on facebook and he has a host of trolls who dogpile on the rabbit and like to talk to those who lean a little more left in a patronizing manner, as if we are children or people who don't understand how the world works. They call us libtards which seriously? Boils my fucking blood. If you are friends with either of us on facebook and you see me ever comment on one of those posts, you know I have reached fuck this shit o'clock with the patronizing bullshit and am flying my ship right into the Death Star. No matter what side you're on in any issue, remember this: civil discourse is still a thing. People who think differently than you are not your enemy, you don't need to de-friend or block them. You don't need to attack or get personal. You can discuss matters like adults or you can, I don't know, refrain from engaging. Grow up. And remember: it's not just your rights that are important. It's all rights.

4. In other news of the week...we have a systemic racism problem in this country that will not go away until we all acknowledge it. If you cannot see how black America is different from white America, do some reading on slavery and what happened during it, who owned who and how it ended; then move on to segregation, and what happened to people during those protests; then go to mortgage discrimination, which was still happening up until the late 1970s and is a major contributor to the urban decay we accuse black people of causing; then you look at crimes committed and lengths of sentences and you look at criminals in general and how we approach and talk about them...then you tell me with clear eyes and a honest heart how we all have the same opportunities and are treated the same across the board. If you tell me those things, I'm going to be asking some questions to make sure you actually did the reading. Do not discount how huge of a thing opportunity is in our lives.  Someone who planted bombs in NYC and NJ and had a shootout with police this weekend was brought in alive. These people are being gunned down in the streets for getting out of their cars. What the fuck is going on here? There is injustice and I will not be quiet about it. If you feel there is injustice, I hope you won't be quiet about it either.

5. Now that my Public Service Announcements are over...I'm loving my newest Alex & Ani Jill gave me this weekend. It is the perfect addition to my collection and one that I identify with right now. Your friends just know sometimes, you know? Thanks Jill!

5. I finally got my food prep shit together despite Whole Foods fucking me and forcing me to use chard instead of spinach in my spinach muffins. I did egg muffins with asparagus and goat cheese, turkey tacos, and steamed asparagus with baked chicken thighs for lunches. Snacks are grapes, bananas, and noosa yogurt.
6. The above was accomplished despite Whole Foods sucking. I use Instacart grocery delivery when I'm in a pinch - I need things for dinner that night and don't have time to get to the store. That was the case Monday. I worked late, my fridge was totally bare, and I had to get some food in the house. Instacart shoppers and service are great - but the stock at Whole Foods is awful. They never have anything. I ordered 12 items and 7 had to be replaced or flat out not fulfilled. Luckily Amazon was delivering the bulk of the groceries the next day so I could put the Whole Foods fuckery behind me and get on with the food prep.

7. This is MFD's favorite old woobie shirt. We do our own laundry, but whites are done jointly because we don't produce a ton of them. Whenever I'm the one to do the whites and I lay hands on this shirt, I consider hiding it.

8. I didn't watch the Emmys on Sunday, and I didn't scour the Internet for Emmy fashion. Who am I? p.s. I was all up on the fall of the Brangelina Empire. Team Jen for life.

9. Important.

10.  E-card of the week...Lots of know it alls on the interwebs these days.
First day of calendar fall, Bs.

  1. That tree against that sky in #2 looks too perfect to be real.
#3 - I've been accused of "being out of Texas too long" because I questioned the need for anyone to own an automatic weapon that isn't military or police enforcement. I had a person that I went to high school say to me something along the lines of "The girl I remember was a Christian. I guess you gave up your Christian faith?" because I spoke of my support of marriage equality on facebook. Like you, I believe in a respectful conversation and sharing of opinions and ideas, but I do not believe in name-calling and disrespect.
Uhm. Am I wrong for thinking that shirt of MFD's looks like the most comfortable shirt ever?

  2. Most of my FB feed is military people and military people, I've noticed, don't really talk politics. So I've been spared all of that...it's there from other people, but it's not glaringly obvious all the time. I think everyone is annoyed and frustrated.

I always leave WF feeling annoyed. Like, sure they have some things I like and I love the bulk bins because they don't have that anywhere else here but I don't know why grocery shopping would ever have to be so expensive.
That being said, if I could get someone to deliver to my door, I'd pay for it.

  3. I love that sunset photo. So gorgeous! I also love the quote from Anne Sweeney. I totally agree with what you are saying in # 4...everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I personally find that I learn a lot from people whose opinions differ from my own.

  4. "Grow up. And remember: it's not just your rights that are important. It's all rights." THIS. It applies to so many aspects of our life right now and I wish we could plaster it everywhere because it's SO SO SO important and it seems like the majority of people have forgotten it.

  5. My mom is constantly posting political stuff on Facebook, and her and I lean opposite ways many times. She's a conspiracy theorist pretty often but I try to maintain some civility. She always thinks millennials are out to take everything, lazy, etc. Drives me crazy sometimes. I also have some people on my FB who lean way opposite of me and post Trump videos and stuff, but I try not to unfriend people just because they have different views, unless they are downright rude.

  6. This: "People who think differently than you are not your enemy, you don't need to de-friend or block them. You don't need to attack or get personal. You can discuss matters like adults or you can, I don't know, refrain from engaging. Grow up. And remember: it's not just your rights that are important. It's all rights." I can't love this any more.

  7. I like that you're political on facebook, mostly because I agree with much of what you have to say. I did block a few people, but a lot of it had to do with the venomous things they posted and the way they attacked people who disagreed with them. The internet is hard, sometimes.

I have so many thoughts on race relations in our country. We (rightfully) despise looting, but attempts at a peaceful protest (like kneeling during the National Anthem) are also met with scorn. If someone else has a better idea for a visible way that a public figure can peacefully protest, then please share it with him (or her. Go Megan Rapinoe). I can see the argument that it's disrespectful to the military, but what about the disregard for human life happening daily? Anyway. End rant. This is why I never post about these things - it's hard when there's no obvious solution.

  8. You perfectly summed up how people treat liberals...like we are children who don't understand how the world works. Also, I want to lose my mind at the word libtard. On so many levels. I am not sure how much more I can handle. I have been trying SO HARD to keep politics off of social media and out of the classes I teach, but my boiling point is coming.

  9. The shirt is incredibly comfortable. Also, you can "hide" and never ever see posts from sites if you click on the drop down arrow and choose to "hide all" from sites like, "Do what the fuck I tell you to do like stand for songs or get the fuck out of my country or I'll shoot you with the millions of guns Obama never stole from me" etc...you know, uber patriotic sites like that. I never see Tea Party garbage in my feed any longer. My works had been so much better because of it.

  10. I just love this post with all my heart. It drives me nuts when my very conservative friends post things about liberals. I wouldn't in a million years post something derogatory about anyone, let alone a political view.

  11. Amen x 50 million on politics and the fact that we need Liberty and Justice for ALL. How about the Golden Rule! Can we all do that. Jesus. Mary. And Joseph. I've been calling on them quite a bit. Lol on Mike Doyle's threadbare shirt. I have stuff like that! Fall will be officially here at 10:21 am. Happy Fall, y'all! #loverhyming

  12. #4...the amount of my friends who are just IGNORING everything just makes my blood boil. But that sky is stunning!

  13. Tell the duggies I totally feel their Monday pain! And I could not agree with you more on politics and recent re-fueled racism issues. I just don't get it, why is it so hard to let people have their own opinions and how on earth in 2016 are we still dealing with racist protests and divides?! Makes me sick to my stomach :(

  14. That quote about the black man being bad / white man being good - that is powerful.
I dont get all these shootings. It's so ridiculous & out of hand. Infuriates me. No excuse.

I never tire of your pugs mugs :) .. had to make that snazzy of saying how cute their faces are :)

  15. I'm socially liberal but fiscally very conservative. Which ends with me being a libertarian. Part of the reason I don't have Facebook and generally stay off Twitter is because of all that nonsense. I cannot get involved, it's too time consuming and it's not worth the stress to argue with people who just suck. 3 and 4 and the general state of the world is a massive reason John is on board with never having kids.
Team Jen for life. I have always disliked Angelina, since the Billy Bob days. I liked her in Hackers and the Johnny Lee Miller days but those were short lived and I've disliked her ever since.
Also I love that MFD never comments until you threaten hiding his shirt and boom there he is. <3

  16. I will forever be on Team Jen and when I saw the divorce gossip start to circulate earlier this week my first thought was good! Haha. As far as politics and racist issues go, I just honestly don't understand how most people cant speak with respect and act like adults. I have noticed on both sides of the aisle that whenever someone makes a good point that can't really be argued....the other side just starts cussing and yelling. Proof that everyone needs to grow the fuck up. This shit is never going to change because people have their heads up their own asses. All people.

And that shirt of MFD's looks super comfy. I saw as long as he doesn't wear it out in public it should be allowed. Mainly because most of my tshirts I wear to bed have holes these days :(

  17. The skies have been amazing lately—a nice reminder that some things are still beautiful amid the madness.

Re #3 and 4, I just clicked off this piece over at Time before coming here: http://time.com/4504012/terence-crutcher-patriotism/ And I 100% agree about the "oh how precious" attitude some conservatives have about liberals, and the term "libtard" makes me fucking rage.
Your point about the NJ/NYC bomb planter being brought in alive has been ringing in my head all week. They managed to not kill him, but couldn't help themselves from killing a child? (Not just once, but I've lost track of how many—which is horrifying in and of itself.) And an unarmed man? And even armed men, IDGAF. If police feel they have no course of action but to murder anyone who poses a threat, believed or actual, they're in the wrong line of goddamn work, period, the end.

Team Jen here too, and that "success" quote is exactly what I need—so relevant to what I've been thinking lately and posted yesterday. How do you always know?! :D

  18. I had no idea woobie was a real word- we use it often. There are very few people I still follow on FB that post anything political, and I keep them around mostly because they start discussions but do so in a respectful manner. It's 84 degrees on the first day of fall, but I've already pulled out my plaid shirt to wear apple picking this weekend :)

  19. Team Jen 4evah, but hopefully she's happy in her life and this is just trivia to her. I am absolutely using "fuck this shit o'clock." Another term that pisses me off is "sheeple." It burns me up because the conservatives I see using it don't have an original thought themselves so what does that make them?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Every time I see someone defending the murder of an unarmed black man (i.e. well he shouldn't have been speeding, well he had drugs in his system, well he etc etc etc) I lose all respect for that person. If people like the NY/NJ bomber, who attempted to murder mass amounts of people, can be taken in alive, why should someone who didn't DO ANYTHING be shot down? What?! I just can't wrap my head around anyone who feels the need to defend that. And I totally agree regarding the hate speech online. I hate the term 'libtard' too.

  21. Oh, that shirt! LOL! I can only laugh so much, though, bc I had one in similar shape up until last summer when i finally let it go and made dusting cloths out of it. It was a sad day... The sunset is amazing as is your bracelet.

  22. I re-read MLK's letter to his fellow clergymen from a Birmingham Jail recently. It's astonishing and saddening that most of the issues he was writing about are the VERY same ones we're still dealing with. It hurts my heart.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I thought I was the only libtard. ;-) Agree to disagree is my feeling. Like you said, all rights are important. If some of us don't have them, none of us do, really.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I used to be more conservative, but now I try to have a "live and let live" attitude. It's pointless and exhausting to be so concerned with the private choices/preferences of other people.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh man - so much yes to the facebook political posts! I definitely don't unfriend anyone that has a different point of view than I do, I think that is the beauty of living where we live - freedoms and such!! I know that if someone tried to hound G on issues, I'd do the same thing as you!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Facebook politics is impossible to ignore. I love have conversations with people that have all kinds of opinions, but the second someone uses an attack word - it stops there. I hate that it turns people against each other instead of encouraging them to learn from one another and have real conversations. Grrrrr.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I've never understood the whole "I'm going to unfriend you because you have different political views" thing. I'm rarely on Facebook these days anyway (I don't think I've posted anything in almost a year), but if I happen to sign on and then see some ridiculous "debate" (a "debate" that's actually just one or two people ganging up on someone else for seeing things differently), I'm done.

White privilege is something I also see posts about on Facebook on a fairly regular basis. Unfortunately, at least 85-90% of those posts are from people who don't believe it exists. I just can't understand this. I feel like you just have to turn on the news, read a news article online, or even just open your eyes and look around you in order to realize that we have some serious problems in our country right now. It's fucking heartbreaking.

On a much different note, Eric has a bunch of shirts like that. I always want to toss them, but he'd be so sad. They're his perfectly lived in shirts that he just wears around the house ... But still. Oh, and we do our own laundry as well.

I've also always been Team Jen. :-)

  28. YES. I'm late on this (woops, busy weekend) but 3 + 4. YES. Also, the Emmys were garbage and as much as I was obsessed with the Brangelina news, i"m over it now that the initial shock has worn off. Time for us all to move on... I AM SO READY (but also scared shitless) for this debate tonight!!!

  30. This most and your discussion on systematic racism speaks to my soul. I've got some thoughts brewing and I have been struggling to get them on paper. I asked my uber driver yesterday what he thought about the debate on Sunday and he asked me when we were going to start taking care of our own backyard. Told me a story about how Romney and Co. we're in Chicago to discuss retraining police because brutality. A TEN-YEAR-OLD girl was interviewed and started sobbing hysterically as she talked about being afraid to go to school because she might get shot by police. WTF ARE WE DOING HERE? 10-freaking-years-old. And we're talking about what bill Clinton did and emails.
