Things I've changed my mind about

Saturday night I looked down and thought welp, here I am doing two things I said I'd never do: wear Toms and wear leggings out of the house. I'm still not wearing leggings with shirts that hit at the hip, mind. I haven't gone insane. I'm perpetually on the hunt for long shirts and sweaters.

If you're a regular around these parts you know I'm solidly strong in my convictions and have no problems telling you about them. I am also a creature of routine and habit, but I like to try new things and I won't ever keep doing something that is no longer working for me or serving a purpose in my life.

I used to make my own cleaning products, particularly granite counter cleaner and Febreze. When Method and Mrs. Meyers became more accessible, I started buying those.

I had it in my mind that I wanted to do certain things: make my own laundry detergent, pick strawberries, perfect the pie crust...I realized I actually don't want to do those things, they just sounded like worthy things to do. They still do sound worthy...for other people. LOL

I swore I'd never use an e-reader...then some books were only available in that format, including everything from Netgalley. My friend PJ from jr high/HS kept recommending one and I resisted forever. They are great for travel. Now I'd say I read probably 70% real book and 30% e-book.

I used to use a lot of OTC medication, now I rely a lot on essential oils.

I used to think my house had to be dusted weekly. Guess what? It's not getting dusted weekly since I started managing two houses and we've all survived. Every other week is working out fine. There have been no deaths due to dust.

In line with the above, hiring a cleaning lady. I struggled with that decision forever and honestly? Best decision ever. It has removed a lot of resentment between me and MFD over who is doing what, plus Linda is awesome and my dogs love her.

Cruising. I never thought it sounded like my type of vacation. It's totally my type of vacation.

I was a devoted user of big mama planners: Franklin Covey, Erin Condren, Plum Paper. Now I have a slim At-A-Glance that I use in conjunction with a Poppin' notebook as an organizational system.

I used to take my coffee with cream and sugar. Now coffee with sugar in it tastes terrible to me.

I used to think I could never work at a job that required more than a 20 minute commute. I've been working at a job like that for more than eight years.

I used to say I could never handle more than two dogs. We now have three dogs. There are still situations in which I think I can't handle more than two dogs. LOL

I said I'd never be able to give up cable. We haven't had cable at home in over a year and a half.

I used to use no paper towels in the house. As the dogs have aged and have more accidents, paper towels are back on the scene for clean up.

What are some things you've changed your mind about?

  1. I think I'm a three dog person... not right now, but in the next few years. What essential oils do you use most? My mom swears by them, but I've never tried them out.

  2. I love ❤️ bounty select a size. I may buy Toms especially since they donate related to purchases. Need cable for the sports. Fios hardly ever goes down. Legging fit is more flattering than baggies and thank Goddess for spandex in jeans. Never thought I would wear leggings, either. Life is ever-changing to a certain extent. Thought provoking post.
Have a happy day. ❤️ your Momma.

  3. Same with the e-reader. And leggings! But, of course, not with a hip-hitting shirt. The horror that would be.

  4. I have totally changed my mind about leggings too but I'm like you with the shirt that goes with them. We also definitely changed our minds about having a third baby (our plan when we had 0 babies) after our second became a toddler ;) I love using an e-reader while travelling and on my commute too.

  5. I felt the same way about the e-readers, and now it's how I read the majority of my books. It's so easy for travel! And I said the same thing about leggings. But, like you, I have a shirt on that covers my butt haha. I think it's good when you change--it shows how you've evolved, instead of getting stuck in a rut, especially when things aren't working for you :)

  6. Same with the coffee. Every day before school starting in 8th grade I think, I would go to Starbucks with my mom and get a caramel macchiato. Now the thought of one makes me gag. I hate coffee with sugar in it. I can do a little cream sometimes, but mostly I just take it black.
Still a solid no on leggings though.

  7. Cleaning Lady!! After our conversation yesterday I am totally getting one. Just have to find the right one :)

  8. I'm reading this as I'm sitting here also wearing Toms with leggings...
The cable one is one that I love. I haven't had it for nearly 2 years and I haven't even thought twice about it. I even had to convince Tony we didn't need it when we get married and now he's on board too.

  9. I love TOMS ;) And K hates leggings, but I wear them with long shirts or oversized sweatshirts all around the house.

I like this idea for a blog post, but of course right now I'm drawing a blank. Haha!

  10. We've been on the cleaning lady train for awhile now, SO WORTH IT. I'm with you on having changed my mind about cable. I don't miss having 200 channels and DVR at all.

  11. I thought Toms were hideous until I got them and now I love them. And I'm trying to change my coffee taste away from loving sugar and cream. It's a work in progress. I've changed my mind about a lot of food - avocados and mushrooms come to mind.

  12. Love this post! I used to be a firm believer that leggings were not pants, I'm not sure when I was converted to the other side but I know I have a drawer full of leggings. I'm still not a leggings and short top person but I have been known to sport the leggings & hoodie look.

  13. I used to swear that I would always have cable when I got my own place (a lot of times we couldn't afford to keep the cable on when I was growing up). I cut my cable around the same time you did and really don't miss it. If I "need" to watch something (like the debate tonight), there are multiple resources available. I also used to have a can of Coke with lunch every single day. I gave it up for Lent last year and now it tastes gross to me and I only drink the occasional ginger ale or fountain soda (it tastes so different!).

  14. How did you break the sugar habit for that coffee?
    YES for essential oils.
I'm the same way with my E-reader. i swore i'd never go that way... but love the ease of having 50 books in the palm of my hand whenever I want.

  15. Things I've changed my mind about: digital cameras: smart phones: audiobooks: ordering trivial things like shampoo, conditioner, hair gel, and lip balm online vs. a physical store... :)

I find the whole legging phenomenon very intriguing. I'm not a fan of tight or form fitting clothes, but I do own a pair or two that I wear with longer tops/tunics/sweater dresses when R and I go out. The current trend of wearing leggings with tops that don't cover the butt is, in my opinion, just wrong... Kudos to you for not losing your mind and still maintaining some sense of decorum! LOL! Have a good one!

  16. Same with the leggings and cleaning lady. I am firmly in the leggings are not pants category as well. Our cleaning lady starts Monday and I cannot fucking wait. I do not have time for that shit anymore.

I also have changed my mind about LulaRoe and succumbed to the rage and have leggings, a shirt, and a dress coming my way. Additionally, laundry pods. I totally thought they were a waste of money and then when we lived with my mom before we bought our house in FL, I grew to love them. She always bought them and they are so much more convenient, don't make a mess, and take 2 seconds to throw in. Sounds stupid, because laundry soap doesn't really take that long to measure and pour, but it seems like they save me so much time.

  17. crusing was a big one for me. i always thought i'd hate it and when i went 2 years ago, i didn't hate it; in fact, i enjoyed myself and we're thinking of going on another one next year!

  18. I was/am a firm believer that leggings are NOT pants...and then one day I was sitting in a nail salon getting a pedicure wearing leggings, a sweatshirt, & drinking Starbucks. I agree that the shirt still needs to be at the butt or longer.

I've gone the opposite way with coffee. I used to only ever drink it black, & I still will, but with so many fun creamers out now I put creamer in it more often than not.

  19. I wear leggings as pants but only good quality ones. Incidentally I said I would never spend a lot of money on high quality leggings... ahem, wrong. Getting sucked in is essential. I used to say I didn't want a dog at all, now I would love to have just one more.

  20. I am the exact same way about Toms and leggings. And my leggings only see the light of day if I have a shirt that covers my ass. There are so many things I thought I would never want/like/do that I totally do. That is the thing about life, we can keep changing and evolving :)

  21. I love this post because it's the notion (and something I've talked about before) of CHANGE. Just because you felt a certain way about something in the past doesn't mean you have to be stuck feeling that way FOREVER. We're allowed to grow, adapt and change our minds. I'm an extremely mercurial person & often change my views and stances on this. THAT'S OK, WE ARE HUMAN.

  22. Tunics and leggings are like my uniform. I recently bought 5 pairs of printed leggings from Zulilly and they are so soft and just delicious. LOL I'm sure I have a lot of "I said I'd never..."

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'm still a nope on leggings but mainly because I don't yet have the body to wear them and feel comfortable. If I did, then I would wear them. With a long shirt, of course! I also used to be very opposed to the idea of an e-reader, but I don't have space for all the books I want, so I finally got one. And love it. And I'd love to see a post on how you use essential oils. I'm not there yet but want to move more in that direction. And oh how I wish I didn't need sugar in my coffee. I've reduced the amount but haven't been able to completely eliminate it.

  24. I realized I actually don't want to do those things, they just sounded like worthy things to do. They still do sound worthy...for other people.
^^ This has trapped me SO many times, in so many silly ways—my ever-growing Netflix queue of aspirational movies, a list of bands I thought I should develop an appreciation for, a "wish list" of things to own, places to visit, skills to have, etc etc. I've changed my mind about SO much—being a runner, not being a smoker stand out as the two biggest surprises and wins in my book—and also had hindsight let me see that some stuff I was never really all that convicted in in the first place, and that letting it all go feels damns damn good.

  25. It's crazy how much we change over the years. I think I'm most proud of not caring (for the most part) what people think of me anymore lol. Take it or leave it suckers...maybe this is why I'm still single though HAHAHA!

  26. I change my mind ALL the time. A natural consequence of making decisions without doing any research to back them up first. :P I was very anti-kindle when they first came out (and anti-smart phone, really I'm just not an early adopter of technology) and now both are amazing. I was also very against leggings as pants and now I don't care. Who am I to police what other people put on their bodies?

  27. Haha! Cleaning ladies really are the best thing ever! Chris swore that he was going to be responsible for all the yard work, but when he hired lawn people I said that I was hiring cleaning people because it was only fair. It just makes life easier, especially when we have people coming in town!

  28. Love this! I think the key element here is we all are able to change our minds. There's no shame in changing our minds and making adjustments as needed.

  29. I absolutely love this type of post, and now I totally want to do one. I still say I don't think I could give up cable, but I would love to hire a cleaning lady ;)

  30. It's true preferences and habits change over time. The leggings and Toms couldn't be more comfortable of an outfit so I don't blame you there. Which of the two cleaners do you use for granite? I've been debating having a cleaning person for years now and still haven't pulled the trigger. I think quarterly would be manageable to do a deep clean. I'm just not really sure what is a reasonable price.

  31. What essential oils do you use? I've never really given them a try but I'd like to find something that helps me with my aches and pains and migraines especially.

  32. I was against e-readers too, until I got one and now I love it. For the first 25 years of my life I hated the chocolate/mint combination. In the past few years I've become a fan. I love how those big, fancy planners look, but I carry notebook from the dollar store. It has my whole life in it, fits in my purse, and I love it.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I read a lot of e-books, but I buy some used paperback novels from the '90s and '80s. If I ever become wealthy somehow, I will pay someone just to dust. It's the chore that I let go most often. We don't have cable, either.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I still have not switched to an e-reader. I just can't do it! I just hired a cleaning lady. It really is the best decision ever. I agree it cuts down on resentment. I just have someone come in while we're at work, clean it, and then everyone is happy!

  35. oh yeah hell no to leggings with shirts that hit at the hip. i wear leggings with long tops/sweaters, and i wear the same length with jeans too. i just hate having that area uncovered.. not uncovered, but you know? all the layers right there. i see people with like leggings and short tops.. stop it.
i am the absolute worst with dusting. we are painting/cleaning/decluttering and i was like wow. i need to dust more. next house for sure. haha.
paper towels are necessary in my life with cats. i try and use them as little as possible, but for every cat related mess, they are a must.
i was super against planners in general, until i realised that i wasn't actually using the digital kind at all and forgetting everything. sometimes i say i'm against something just because it's popular, which is really annoying. harry potter, lord of the rings... i avoided both of those for a long time too. ended up loving them both.
i used to take my tea with milk and 4-5 sugars because my mum did. i still take it with milk (or half and half at work where there is no milk) but i haven't had any sugar in my tea in years and i don't miss it.
i used to say i'd never have a bedroom without a TV in it... ever since living with KC, i haven't had a tv in the bedroom and have miraculously survived.
i keep thinking about getting a cleaning lady/person to come in every so often to just do the things i really suck at, like bathrooms and stuff, or doing a hardcore clean and then i can do the upkeep, you know? i just don't even know where to start and my cats would absolutely hate anyone who came in haha. Chelsea wouldn't, she'd be all up in their face but the other two would be bitches.
i think realising i'm doing/wanting to do something for the wrong reasons and letting go of it is such a relief.

  36. I am with you on the ereader. I think I'm actually reading more because now I see no problem with having multiple books on me. I used to carry 2 hardcover books at one time in my purse and my poor back. I'm sure I'm standing up a bit straighter now that I don't have the extra weight on my shoulders. I will never go back(haha okay, okay, I DO have some paper books too that I've had authors sign!)

    1. Some books were hard to read on a commute...and I still lug books that are too heavy if I get them like that from the library...but overall it's nice to have a light option!

  37. I am on the same hunt for longer shirts, so please share when you find them!

  38. Great list.
Hmmmm...let me think...I used to never drink tea. Now, I enjoy hot tea. Still not iced tea which I know sounds so un-Southern-like.

  39. I just had this same thought recently! First of all, I used to HATE beer. Now I am a beer lover. I also used to not mind mushrooms. now the squishy texture of them grosses me out like no other. i used to think I wasn't a morning person. Then i started going to bed early and whaddya know..i love mornings and am so productive when I wake up early! lol.

  40. Oh leggings. How I love them. I was a hold-out on skinny jeans for the longest time. I'm not the first on board for any trend, but I don't know how I resisted leggings.

  41. I feel like have changed a bunch . . . I used to be so uptight about cleaning and the kids and volunteering and then I just decided to chill . . . so much better for everyone!
