TWTW - the one with New England

Way back before spring even started, I booked a flight to Boston to see my BFF Kim. I lost sight of the trip in the coming months, and then it was here before I knew it. I sort of love when that happens. I hopped a train from work to the airport and was in Boston in what seemed like minutes. Who buys a mug of their own town at the airport before they even leave the city? That would be me.
There's nothing like the comfort of old friends, is there? The ease of being around each other, the lively conversations punctuated by comfortable silences, the joy in doing absolutely nothing together. Laura and I have been friends for 26 years and Kim and I for 23, and it's been well over 10 years since any of us lived in even close to the same zip code. Not more than a day goes by without me talking to them via text and email but we don't see each other face to face often so when we can, I absolutely love it. Friday we just shot the shit at Kim & Steve's. Saturday morning we fueled up with DD and headed up to Ogunquit, Maine. What a cute town. After getting more coffee, we walked about a mile along the Marginal Way.
The coast of Maine is rugged and beautiful. It seems to have it all - endless sky, ocean, beach, greenery, and rock.
We came out of the Marginal Way into Perkins Cove and were leisurely ladies who lunch at Jackie Too's. The food and views were excellent as was the company, of course. I knocked a 40 before 40 off of my list - eat a lobster roll in Maine. Three cheers for best friends who support your weird list quests. It was excellent. I've had lobster rolls before but Maine's are famous for a reason. The Seadog blueberry wheat beer (brewed in Maine) and the blueberry pie made with local blueberries were the cherries on top...in addition to the salt scrub we all tried in the bathroom and had to have that Laura then had to repackage on my behalf so I could take it on the plane. She was doing hers and knowing me as she does knew I would not have the patience for such things.
We strolled around Perkins Cove, in and out of shops and checking out the boats.
We also dipped leisurely in and out of shops back in the center of town. I totally enjoyed the tempo of this town - laid back, a little funky and arty, and just beautiful. Quite picturesque. I could not believe the flowers everywhere and all of the color.
After a thoroughly enjoyable day on the Maine coast, we headed back to Mass to check out Kim & Steve's new house before digging into some Italian at Pomodoro in Brookline. We tired our asses out and ended the night with relaxing and Step Brothers, which I have never seen and which I found to be hilarious. I need to see it uncut like immediately.
All good things must come to an end. I was home by two on Sunday and spent the afternoon inside with the dogs, away from the hellacious humidity. MFD got me flowers from the Farmers' Market since that was his errand this weekend. We had hoagies for a late lunch and I did a bunch of unpacking and hausfrauing and setting the house to rights.
Weekly food prep: scrambled eggs with green onion and cheese and power breakfast muffins for breakfast; salads and leftovers for lunches; baby carrots, bananas, and greek yogurt for snacks; tomato and red onion salad, baked chicken leg quarters (I was going to grill them but Sunday was melt your skin off hot), salads, and enchiladas for dinners.

  4. How long is the drive to Maine from BOS? We've been talking about doing a New England driving adventure... I'm amazed at how much you get done in a weekend even on vacation!! Now, did MFD have specific flower instructions or did he choose those on his own? They are the perfect choice either way!

  6. What a fab weekend. I have never been to Ogunquit and it's like only an hour away from me. haha. One day. The heat and humidity this weekend was terrible. It looks like it will stick around for a few more days much to my dismay.

  7. I love friendships like this - it really is like being with family. I like that eating a Lobster Roll was on your list and you could cross it off - I think I will be adding this to a similar list :)

  8. Maine looks utterly gorgeous. I need to add that to my travel bucket list. At one point my family played a game and we all envisioned our lives all the way out until retirement, and I said I was going to retire in Maine by the sea and be a hermit/artist, which is entirely random and based on nothing. But, since I said I was going to do it, I should probably at least visit and see what it's like!

  11. Sounds like a wonderful weekend trip! I also have a best friend named Laura and we've been friends almost 25 years. Holy crap. Your food and beer pics look delicious as usual and I would love a fresh lobster roll now. We did a trip to Kennebunkport years ago and it was so beautiful. It was summer and we still had hot chocolate every day from this cute cafe. Glad you had such a great trip!

Maine looks absolutely gorgeous and clearly I need to get there one day. They have the Sea Dog blueberry at WOB on draft pretty much all year round down here so I have enjoyed quite a few glasses of that!

  24. Gorgeous place. I want to see two or three small towns in New England. Husband and I have talked about a fantasy road trip from South Carolina to Maine.

  25. That's a beautiful coastline! I like the little flowers. Sounds like you had a fantastic time with your friends - old friends are the best friends. It's great when you catch up and it's like no time has passed. Also, I like the balance of travel time and home time you have - I always struggle to get that right.

  26. We moved so much as a kid that I lost contact with a lot of friendships but the ones I've managed to hang onto and can get together with are always so special! I love catching up and just knowing that you don't have to fill the silence is wonderful! Looks like you had such a great time and I would totally buy something from Florida at the airport if it caught my eye!! Hope you have a great week!

  27. Awww I miss New England so much!! That lobster roll, the pretty Maine shoreline, everything!! Weekends with old friends are just the best.

  28. I LOVE the east coast for reasons like this trip. It's quick and easy and you can be home by Sunday. I love your pictures from Maine. I would love to go back in the summer. I'm still drooling over your NC pics - you've been a busy traveler this summer.

  30. I feel so fortunate to have a few girlfriends like yours. Those relationships are beyond words how special they are. Maine...I've never been, and admittedly, it hasn't been on my radar. Now, you've convinced me that I need to add it to the list. How awesome is Step Brothers?! I'm not a movie quote person...but that one has a few that I can't help myself. Except I always get them wrong, because, well, I'm not a movie quote person.

  31. Wow, Maine looks gorgeous!! I love friends whom you've known forever and can do everything and nothing with. Eating a lobster roll in Maine is on my list as well- cheers for crossing that one off of yours! Also, Step Brothers is one of my all time favorite movies-- Will Ferrell singing had me laughing out loud. Pow!!

  32. Fantastic trip and awesome pictures! I haven't been to Maine yet. And now I want blueberry pie.

  33. I'm actually flying to Ohio on Thursday for a long weekend with my BFF, so seeing this post got me all pumped up (like I wasn't already). I haven't seen him in almost 2 years, so I've been really looking forward to it!

I've never been to Maine. I've always wanted to go, and your pictures make me want to go immediately. It's absolutely gorgeous! I'm also a big fan of lobster rolls so I was drooling over that picture!

  34. Great pictures! I want to visit Maine so, so much! Hopefully a New England train trip is in our future.

  35. Boats and hoes! That's another oft-quoted movie in the Martinez house and I can't hear Time to Say Goodbye without busting out my operatic voice.

I've spent one afternoon in Maine and I think it was in the same town you mentioned. I was in high school, so I didn't get nearly enough from the experience and I have always wanted to go back. What a great quick trip!

  36. But did you go the fucking Catalina Wine Mixer?

    ReplyDelete
  37. what an awesome weekend! before I got accepted into student teaching I was planning a quick trip up to Maine with Dave to knock it off the list...oh well there's always next year, right?
