A MONTHLY CATCH ALL CATCH UP OF LIFE

L I S T E N I N G ... to The Bridge or E-Street Radio on Sirius if I'm in the car.

W A T C H I N G ... Going Clear on HBO - the documentary that profiles eight former members of Scientology. That shit is crazy. For real. I've been meaning to watch it but forgot so I owe thanks to Heather for reminding me!

R E A D I N G ... Another Beatriz Williams - Tiny Little Thing. This is the third year in a row she's graced my summer with a good book. Thanks B.

C O O K I N G ... Not much. I've pretty much entered the summer cooking season, in which I grill or bake a protein and serve it with a salad: green, tomato and red onion, caprese, or cucumber. Dunzo.

D R I N K I N G ...  I was lured into trying the very berry hibiscus refresher at Starbucks with a rewards card, which is the adult version of being lured into a scary white van with candy. It was quite refreshing.

W A N T I N G ... to spend some time this weekend corralling my electronics. I have gadgets all over right now. I want to make sure I know exactly what I'm going to be using to take 498 trillion photos of our Wild West trip.

N E E D I N G ... to schedule a massage. Once upon a time I signed up to get monthly massages then promptly did not get one for the next four months. It's time. Self-care is important.

W O R K I N G   O N ... a mid-season wardrobe assessment to see what I've worn and not worn this summer. At the end of the season, whatever has not been worn is given away.

E N J O Y I N G ...  My monthly lunch dates with Jana - my college friend, blogger at Jana Says, and co-host of the Show Us Your Books linkup (the next one is August 11). Since school is out, her daughter joined us this week! Her mom asked for her permission to appear on my blog so we're all set. She's very funny and smart and even contributed to our book talk. She's a natural fit. Unfortunately I didn't check my pic after I took it and her pretty eyes are closed here. That's what I get for not checking. We'll get a better one next time! Or she'll have to join the sunglasses club, where no one knows if your eyes are open or not.

What's going on with you?

  1. Eyes closed or not, it's an adorable picture anyway. That Scientology documentary sounds fascinating! I might need to check that out. My guy & I rarely watch the same tv shows, and I don't watch much tv, but that sounds like something we'd both enjoy.

  2. That's true with sunglasses and love that she's already jumping in with the book talk!! I've been going through my wardrobe too, found some Summer tops I forgot about and need to wear so I don't have to get rid of them, lol! Love the Very Berry Hibiscus. After it's all gone I like to refill it with water throughout the day for berry infused water, so delish!

  3. Love the sunglasses on the Starbucks cup. I can't wait to live vicariously through your travel west via all the pictures! the Scientology thing is intriguing and odd. To each his/her own as long as you do no harm.
Another glorious weather day in eastern PA!
    Carpe diem! Love, your Momma
Love the picture of you girls who lunch! #sweet

    1. From the documentary, it appears that the Scientologists are doing harm to those that leave. That shit was crazy mother! You should watch it.

  4. I've been wanting to watch the scientology documentary but I have no HBO! Gotta wait for the next free weekend and try to catch it then. I have a book from a scientology survivor high on my to read list so I will report back. Is this book you're reading somewhat happy and upbeat? My picks lately have been nothing but downers and I need something light!

  5. It's a cute picture even if her eyes are closed. She had fun having lunch with you, too, and thanks for saying all those nice things about her.

I watched part of that documentary. Fucked up shit right there. I need to watch it again but I'm not sure I can handle that level of crazy.

  6. Refreshers are the best - love them on a hot day! xo, Biana -BlovedBoston

  7. I'm with you on the massage thing. Today might be the day for that. I really like your idea of going through your clothes at the end of every season and giving things away. I should try that. I currently have a group of things that I want to try and consign, but that generally seems like such a hassle. Giving them away sounds far easier.

  8. Going to start reading the Williams book right after luckiest girl alive. You like it so far?

  9. I'll have to look up the documentary...and the book.
I cleared out half my closet a month ago. I made myself try on every single thing. If I hadn't worn it in 6 months, it went.

  10. Yum that refresher sounds really good. I actually watched a Bruce + E Street Band Biography special before work this morning and it was really good!

  11. Now that you have brought up "Going Clear" again, I need to find a way to watch it. It sounds very interesting, of course learning of the various types of religions and what they encompass somewhat intrigues me. Related to your Starbucks, I believe that you can get the very berry hibiscus drink in those little powder packs to miss at home from amazon. And, I love your wardrobe clean out. I really need to stop playing and get on taking care of my wardrobe issues. Happy thursday

  12. I want to see that Scientology doc. I'm kind of obsessed with Leah Remini and her story of leaving the church.

Hooray for monthly lunches with Jana! I love that her daughter got in on the action.

  13. I've YET to try the berry hibiscus refresher, but the Lime one is the bomb! Refreshing, they are.

I'll have to look for "Going Clear". We don't have TV so I'll have to see if I can find it online, but both Jeff and I love watching documentaries on scientology. That shit is whack, yo!

Great picture of yourself, Jana and her girl. Jealous y'all cool cats don't live closer, lunch sounds delightful!

    Happy Almost Friday love!

    xo

  15. I always see the hibiscus refresher & think about getting it & then just get coffee like I always do. Maybe next time I'll give it a shot.

  16. I would love a massage...I haven't had one since I had a prenatal one...so yeah over two years now. I do wanna try that refresher drink! Looks SO GOOD!

  17. Go get that massage! Especially if it's already paid for! I would be on that every free chance I have lol. The very berry hibiscus refresher sounds perfect for summer!

  18. You're so welcome! In keeping with the scientology theme, a Texas political podcast I listen to was talking about a scientology group successfully persuading our governor to veto a mental health bill (full article.). So much crazy.

Added the Beatriz Williams book to my goodreads list, thanks!

  19. oh, how cool! I didn't know that Jana was your IRL friend. How fun!

"Going Clear" was great. If that is to be believed (saying that in a political capacity because I was 100% believe it), Tom Cruise is insane. It makes me sad that Travolta is though because I love him!

And I need a massage too!

  20. I seriously just wrote a "Currently" post last night for next week! Great minds! I don't drink coffee, so in the summer it's refreshers and in the winter its hot chocolate. So good! Going Clear is crazy. I knew a lot about it already, but it was still so eye opening and creepy. I can't wait to read David Miscavige's dad's book when it comes out. I also still want to read his niece's book.

  21. I loved that Scientology doc. I haven't blogged in a couple weeks, and I feel bad but it's also kind of liberating.

  22. I am 4th on the wait list for Tiny Little Thing which my library still shows on order.

Is this berry hibiscus drink carbonated?

I love that you and Jana do a monthly lunch and it's so nice when kids are intelligent and funny. I wouldn't expect anything less from a kid raised by Jana.

  23. omg going clear was CRAYZAY town. wtf is what i kept saying the entire time...so scary. it feels like such a cult to me. i don't like using intimidation to make someone join a religion.

  24. Awe, love the picture of the three of you ladies! So awesome you are doing monthly lunches. I watched Going Clear a few months ago and yikes!!! Crazy what some people believe and buy in to. I have been meaning to grab a refresher at Starbucks but every time I go in there I smell the coffee and change my mind. One day. Perhaps going through the drive thru would help me stay on track.

  25. i've been meaning to watch going clear too...thanks for the reminder, which I'll promptly forget lol

  26. Beautiful picture! Also you are so organized with everything. Love that you give away things that have not been worn etc. I wish I was even a quarter of that in organization. One day maybe!

  27. Oh man... I watched Going Clear a few weeks ago and it stuck with me for a while. It's some next level unsettling!

  28. my library needs to figure out how to balance shit out. i'll be sitting here twiddling my thumbs one day waiting for my books and the next, all 5 of them will come in with a 2wk reading period since others are waiting for it. i just got another library notice that a book i've been waiting for (since march) has come in...this makes 4 plus the one i'm already trying to get through.

go get that massage! i'm going to be booking one for next week because treat yo'self!

  29. That documentary sounds insane I'll check it out. So glad you are getting together with Jana and making time for each other. Hope you have a great weekend.

  30. My sister said that documentary was really good. I love the black iced tea at Starbucks. So refreshing on a hot day.

  31. hahaha the sunglasses club! love it. best thing about sunglasses. I still haven't read any Beatriz Williams, need to get on that!

  32. What did you think of Going Clear? I couldn't get over the insanity of it or of the people involved. It was one of those movies that I was actually asking questions out loud, mainly of the "wtf?" variety.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I've heard those Starbucks refreshers are quite delicious and I think I'm nervous to try them because I'm afraid I will get addicted. It's a slippery slope for me.

  34. That book looks pretty interesting. :) Not much - it's been a hectic summer tis all. Need time to disconnect from it all - a vacation from myself. Lol. Have a great one Stephanie! -Iva

  36. That's such a cute picture (even with the closed eyes)!

I really want to watch that documentary. It sounds so interesting (and insane)!

  37. Oh that documentary sounds so interesting!! I will have to look it up. The picture of the three of you is so cute. Next week I'm going to make a caprese salad, I've been craving one for some time now, and I feel like the tomatoes season is quickly slipping by!
