Scenes from a Snow Day

Working from home is like a B-12 shot in the ass of my week: I gain two hours when I don't commute. Two freaking hours. It's the thing you dream about, gaining two hours in your day, right?

Work-wise, I start earlier and end later. I plow through things without distraction. I can change the laundry from the washer to the dryer on my way to the bathroom. And I can do it all in elastic waist pants.

There are no photos of me working in this post, because a) work is private and b) those pics would be boring. Not that these in between photos from a work from home day aren't. They're small, stupid things that feel delicious and decadent because I *can* do them during a weekday. At lunch, I wolfed down a sandwich and glanced through Real Simple at lunch, then I painted my nails (Essie penny talk) before meal planning for next week.
In the afternoon, I shoveled and salted, marveled at the sun coming out after the shitty morning, chased down the shutter that blew away with the ferocious wind, and washed the curtains the dogs rage peed on since I dared to be outside without them. And I did all of it in my polka dot pajama pants.
But the best part at the end of the day is not suiting up to go out in the cold, perhaps having to walk over human poop on the way to the station, pushing like a tiny fish in a huge school to actually get through the door and onto the train, sitting all squished with everyone in their winter coats and loud ass phone calls, then getting on the shuttle to the parking lot or hauling ass back to my car on foot.

Not having to commute helps my balance and gives me a sense of found time on those here and there WFH days.

When I work from home I can just walk over to the couch, kick my feet up, have it still be sort of light out, and know that my laundry is all done and folded and waiting to be put away upstairs.
Where it will sit...for a long time. Because putting laundry away sucks.

What would you do with two extra hours in a day?

  2. I work primarily from home now, with some travel days in the mix. Sometimes I miss office life, but the coworkers in said office were odd people, so I don't miss it THAT much - I definitely get more done working from home!

  3. I work at a school and today we have a 2 hour delay. So I'm catching up on blogs thanks for writing! I emptied the dishwasher and loaded the dishwasher. I nanny after school so today I will go to their house in the morning to let mom and dad go to work at their normal time and I'll put the kids on the bus. So not terribly exciting stuff but that is my "extra" 2 hours

  6. Thumbs up and heart eye emojis to elastic waist pants, I LOLed. Penny Talk is pretty, I love that color. Ahhh the rage pee. Hawkeye rage poops. Right by the door. There's a whole process to leaving her, and if you forget the treat, there will be a poop upon your return.
I would love to work from home. It's not currently an option :( Maybe one day!

  7. On my snow day I had to take someone to Shop Rite... on the plus side, the store was empty! Oh, and I have the same polka dot pajama bottoms, in fact I'm wearing them right now. If not for the ridiculous Shop Rite adventure, I'd have been in them all day yesterday too.

  10. I am working from home most days of the week right now until we get Zoe into daycare and I have to say that I am a much happier and more productive employee when I work from home. Like you said, it is nice having two extra hours every day!!! Plus working in my jammies is much more comfortable. And not having to listen to cubemates chew their food or talk too loud on the phone is a plus.

  13. I swear I get so much more done on WFH days without all the constant interruptions and people! Aside from work though, you had a very productive day! I hear you on getting back hours of your day too. When I moved closer to work I got back 3 hours and at first didn't know what to do with all the extra time!

  14. I wish I had the option to work from home for so many reasons especially gaining some time during the day when you cut out the commute, freeing up miles on my car and instead of going out for lunch, I can make a sandwich and do some random things around the house freeing up m my weekends for more fun stuff instead of chores!

  15. Love that nail polish color. I love how the metals are back in these days. Might have gotten rid of my Sally Hansen Chrome polishes just a few years ago ...

  16. I started my own business about a year ago and work in and out of the home. I have a home office that I loved decorating and it is my comfort cove. I have meetings with families and at schools about 2-3 times a week. I have had to work on delegating work time and house/chore time but I am getting a pretty good schedule down. I love your manicures...wish I could be good at doing my own (I suck at it!!). I have also found alot more time for taking a break during the day and reading a chapter or two or flipping through a magazine. I am definitely more relaxed. Don't know if I could go back to working in an office with lots of different personalities and daily drama. I always seemed to get sucked into that.

  17. That is the best part about working from home is all the extra time you gain, plus I'm more focused and relaxed. My new job doesn't allow it which made my jaw drop to the floor. Major side eye :(

  19. Great blog! I love working from home :)
If I had two extra hours I'd probably paint or do some diy projects 😊

  20. I do love that nail color... How do you find these things?! My ability to work at home comes and goes... a lot of time it has to do with how organized things are. If things are clean, I love working at home. If they aren't, I am figeting and stir crazy until they are clean... which prevents me from getting actual work done. Although... I came home Friday night and worked for six hours nonstop in a kitchen that looked like a tornado swept through it... so... you never know. I do love that you got to skip a two hour commute. That's good for everyone more than every once in awhile.

  21. I saw so many people with snow days this week and was so jealous! We've had a "Snow Draught" in Chicago this winter, which is nice but also makes me miss being cozy in my apartment wrapped in a blanket while the snow falls outside. Your day looks fab! Doing extra things at home on workdays feels like such a luxury.

  22. "Rage pee"- hahahahahahahaha. Enzo doesn't rage pee, but he does sadness pee sometimes when we travel. I know the dog sitter feels terrible but there's nothing that can be done about it. My cat rage pukes, though. She lives at my parents' house and it makes my dad crazy... lol.

  24. I can't imagine that commute! I limit myself with job prospects because I refuse to drive more than a half hour, with traffic. Too bad you can't work from home one day a week, regardless of the weather. I just remembered I have Essie Penny Talk and need to wear it soon!
