Thursday Thoughts

1. I reference Dirty Dancing in passing conversation at least two or three times a week.
Photo: www.mountainlakehotel.com.  YOU GUYS! Did you know you can STAY at Kellerman's?
It's in Virginia, but still...they have freaking Dirty Dancing weekends.
Why am I only finding out about this now? I want to go to there. I am totally doing this in 2013.
Earlier this week I mentioned that I wished the Catskills of the Dirty Dancing days still existed.

Tuesday I made a speech that sounded like this: "We're supposed to do the show in two days, you won't show me the lifts, I'm not sure of the turns, I'm doing all this to save your ass, what I really want to do is drop you on it!"

Then I said to her, "I sound like Baby in that scene from Dirty Dancing where they're sweaty and angry and screwing up the dance, don't I?" Obviously not being AS familiar with the movie as me, she did a funny little laugh and backed away from me. I continued, "You know, before they break the car window with a rock, head to the lake in the rain and do the lift in the water?" Bone up on your Dirty Dancing, sweetheart. That's all I've got to say.

2. I just finished the latest Sookie book by Charlaine Harris. I like the characters much more in the novels than in True Blood. Keep your underwear on, I didn't say I don't like the show. I do like it, I just like the books a lot better. However, the last few have been ho hum. And the Sookie in the air on every cover freaks me out.

3. The incorrect use of the possessive apostrophe is driving me utterly insane. The misuse is rampant lately - I've seen it all over facebook. WHAT GIVES? I want to shake everyone making things possessive when they need not be and leaving the possessive off when it is required. GET A GRIP ON THE POSSESSIVE APOSTROPHE, PEOPLE.

4. I dream about creating my own headboard with a sumptuous fabric and nailhead trim. Then I shake myself and realize the weird requirement I have in which my bed must always be located underneath the window will prohibit this for all eternity. It seems to be a lot of work to do for a spare room.

5. I keep seeing people wearing Converse in awesome colors, and I want to get them. Then I remember how much I hated them the last time I owned them. Plus they have a lot of white, which I'm against in shoes. Have they gotten more comfortable in the past 10 years?

6. I'm totally into the Hatfields & McCoys on the History Channel. These types of shows are normally not my cup of tea. I prefer the Hatfields even though that Jim Vance is a crazy bastard. I haven't seen part three yet so don't talk to me about it.

7. I am counting down the minutes until my first shore visit of the season, which is next weekend. My whole family is going to Cape May for the weekend to celebrate my Grandmom's 80th. I can't wait!

8. iPhone week two: acclimation. I've been playing solitaire like nobody's business. Plus, hello, I can accessorize my phone. Here's the case I just ordered from Amazon:

9. Did you guys hear about the iseptaphilly.com campaign? I heard it on the radio last Friday and then Gail sent me an email about it yesterday. I laughed maniacally both times. They want people to take videos of why they love to ride SEPTA and post them. Are they serious? Too bad you can't translate stink and heat so they can be smelled and felt on video. Fools.

10. My favorite E-card of the week from pinterest:

This morning I woke up and thought, "Oh good, it's Friday, I can sleep in tomorrow." Wrong. Then I left the house without my breakfast. Then I drove to the train station with the trunk flapping open in the wind. Then I wished very hard for a jackpot winning lottery ticket. Then I needed one of these.

the Memorial Day weekend that was

The beauty of a three day weekend: every day I did something productive and every day we saw friends and family and had a chance to relax.

+

Nicole & Patrick's wedding reception at the Ballroom at the Ben
Mark, the male half of the newlyweds, and MFD
Some of the girl cousins
+

Staying up late to shoot the shit with Gail and Mindy at the dining room table and sharing many laughs when we found Andy sleeping somewhere else in the house or flower bed mulch every time we got up.
The same mulch I fell in by trying to vault over the railroad ties when we got home.
The flower bed took a beating Friday night.

+

Early morning grocery run to two different stores, hungover. Do not try this at home.

+

Sweat bands make me laugh.

+

An unsuccessful trip to Marshalls to replace the salt shaker I broke during macaroni salad making,
followed by lunch at Panera with Gail.

+

White sangria poolside at Mom & Rich's. Tons of laughs. My white sangria:
half of a big bottle of sauvignon blanc, half of a small bottle of moscato, about a cup of lemon/lime seltzer, a splash of white grape juice, pineapple, kiwi, strawberries and blueberries.

+

BBQ chicken a la MFD. Couch, magazines, wine and HGTV = excellent Saturday night
Usually Gus drapes himself around Gail's neck. She decided to return the favor.
+

Leisurely Sunday morning: lounging, TV, coffee, and 107 loads of laundry. Give or take.

+

Making my own fabric softener and Febreze
Lots of mad scientist business going on here
+

A great Sunday afternoon with some Doyle cousins at Col & John's.
Corn dip...make this for your next summer party:
Two cans of mexicorn (in mid-summer I use fresh), a small can of diced green chiles, a bunch of green onion, two cups of shredded cheddar, a cup of mayo, a cup of sour cream, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp cumin, 1/8 tsp garlic powder. Mix and chill before serving with tortilla chips.

+

The Descendants. MFD said "I wish George Clooney was my friend." Me too, dear. Me too.

+

Skinnytaste's no bake cheesecake, red enchilada sauce for buffalo chicken enchiladas later this week (SO simple and easy to make at home, why buy? I did not use the caldo tomate whatever this recipe calls for), and corn and scallion quinoa. If you don't eat quinoa, you should try it using this recipe. It's light but filling. Perfect for summer.
Enchilada sauce. Ole.
Corn and scallion quinoa. Do it!
+

Monday lounging at Mom & Rich's pool.

MFD ghengising his fourth piece of corn on the cob
+

Lots of time with Gus and Geege and MFD

+

Extreme gratitude to the service men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice

the Memorial Day weekend that was

I'm gleeful for the short week this week even though it is starting on a wretched Tuesday.

As they say in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure: be excellent to each other.

Thursday Thoughts

1. What's up with macaroons? They do not appeal to me in the slightest. It seems like every food blogger on earth has blogged about them in the last month.

Photo: cookingetcetera.com
2. The bastard brazen squirrels are eating my herb seeds. What do I do? Arrange an intricate map of twine across the tops of the pots? Put a metal grate over them? Wire mesh? Tiny razor blades? Yes, that crossed the line. I would never harm the squirrels, I'm not a psycho, even though my handwriting identifies me as a serial killer. Gardeners, growers of things...your advice please!

3. I started using two monitors at work last week, and it rocks.

4. I got a new iphone for work. Meanwhile back at the ranch, I still use my trusty little LG phone to text. I carry two phones and have for almost 10 years. When people ask me why, I always make up something different. Such as "I'm in the CIA/This is how I run my brothel business/I use this one to field my calls for the Psychic Friends Network/Tiny Baby Jesus calls me here." It's fun.

5. Last night I switched my summer and winter clothes over. Things that didn't fit well last summer fit now. And a beloved bathing suit that I absolutely adored but last fit into five years ago now fits again. I am super fucking jazzed. I am a major purger, and I held onto that thing for four seasons. You know I really wanted to wear it again.
Mid-transition = holy mess
6. I don't like cous cous, and honestly I think part of the reason is that I don't like the word. I DO like corn on the cob, and I can't wait to use the shit out of that all summer. If you come my house, you're probably being served corn salad/corn dip/corn cakes/cornholio/you get it made out of fresh corn.

7. I've been thinking a lot this week about limits. What is enough? When is enough? We are constantly growing, and I find my tolerance has increased for some things and decreased for others. It's good to give yourself a gut check every now and again. FYI, things I have decreased tolerance for: adults who make stupid decisions, people who don't appreciate what they have in their lives, selfish people, people who groom themselves on the train, humidity, crumbs on counter tops, food waste.

8. I've gone all week with no nail polish (besides clear). I planted on three different days, but still. The universe is clearly out of alignment. I will remedy this tonight after I get my hair done by the fabulous Kristi Morgan at Sensational Scissors.

9. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about Instagram. Gus was happy to oblige.
What's the fuss, Gus?
10. Since we're on the precipice of summer with Memorial Day weekend, I will share my favorite ecard of the week as seen on pinterest:
Clean up your feet, ladies, be it at home or at a nail place

I hope you have the Memorial Day weekend your heart desires. Remember to wear your sunscreen and reapply,

the weekend that was

Shamelessly enjoying Don't Be Tardy for the Wedding
Photo: amazon.com
+

Making macaroni salad to take to the Sannelli/DiCostanzo house, plus veggie pizzas and hot spinach and artichoke dip for Kit Kat D's second birthday party

+

Scrapple, sliced super thin and fried crispy. It's what's for breakfast.

+

This weekend's coffee of choice

+

Cleaning my spice jars

+

A trip to Home Depot where 7,893 other people were also buying gardening items

+

Herbs and tomatoes planted in pots

+

Spring plants and lavender trimmed and minimal annuals planted.
I'm going for low maintenance this year.
And also, I planted summer bulbs and totally forgot where, so I can't be plopping plants all over.
It's like a bulb minefield out there.

+

Purging drawers

+

Another lovely night at the Sannelli/DiCostanzo home

+

Full body exhaustion from planting, when I went to bed Saturday night I felt like I was 682

+

Tis the season for flip flop scatter. If you don't have Sanuk yoga mat flip flops, get some.
They rule the school. Total comfort.

+

Food prep for this week - broccoli breakfast bake, tuna, cutting up fruits & veggies

+

Kit Kat D's second birthday party. Have you seen a cuter tutu? I haven't.

+

Watching my dogs have the best life
Gus prefers to nap on cushions

Geege likes to nap at the front door, guarding the house even in his sleep
+

Sunday night sacked out on the couches like slobs catching up on TV

the weekend that was

Today on the train I realized my cardigan was on inside out.

Dear universe - please make this week productive, speedy, and stress-free. Thank you in advance.

In the words of Tone Loc, let's do it.

Thursday Thoughts

1. I've been to Marshalls three times in the past six days. Surely they will impose a limit on me soon.

2. Do you watch Hart of Dixie? I do, and I love it. My friend Gwen and I think Bluebell might be the perfect place to live. Monday was the season finale, and hot damn it was good. The hiatus is the perfect time for you to catch up on it. Now git.
Photo: blog.zap2it.com
3. The driver of my train home stops in a different spot on the platform every day. I guess this sick bastard likes to watch people scurry.

4. I wish summer Fridays were starting tomorrow. Or ever. I've never worked at a company that does summer Fridays. They sound wonderful.

5. I'm reading Everything I Needed to Know About Being a Girl I Learned from Judy Blume. It's lovely.

6.This morning on Preston & Steve, I heard them talking about a guy who fears silverware, medieval furniture, and komodo dragons. I don't feel so weird about my weird fears now.

7. I love my HOPE bracelets made by Debbie Peters that she's selling to benefit Relay For Life. There's still time to buy if you want some! We can raise money until August. They're $8 each or two for $15.

8. Is Sandusky's lawyer serious, asking them to throw out charges? My head explodes thinking about this.

9. We're almost to Memorial Day. How?

10. If I take the 7:37 train in, I get off and hear this announcment "Now arriving - the 8:08 to Temple University." Then I immediately start singing But I know y'all wanted the 808 can you feel that B-A-S-S, bass...But I know y'all wanted the 808 can you feel that B-A-S-S, bass.

I like the way you move,
