Thursday Thoughts - I got that sunshine in my pocket got that good soul in my feet

Anticipating: Girls weekend this weekend.

Feeling: Because this is the part of summer I love the most - the build up.

Sleeping: Like a freaking rock. This week has been primo sleeping weather.
Trying: A bigger crate for Bruce at the shore. I am going to pimp it out like something on MTV Cribs. Thanks to Lori for loaning it and to Dawn for delivering it. And to Bruce for considering it? Maybe?
Wanting to know what the fuck is happening with blogger comments. They say they're fixing them but it's been well over a week. No fix.

Choosing: Kindle First books - The Thinnest Air for me this month. Do you do Kindle First books?

Reading: Something in the Water by Catherine Steadman, which just came out this week - I have it from Netgalley. I'm picking up I'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer from the library today. Show Us Your Books is Tuesday!

Eating: Last night I arrived to the shore hangry so I ordered a bunch of food. Then I ate 8790 cheesy poofs and when the food arrived, none of the food. That's a little how my food life has been going lately. My prep  has been off so my eating has too. I'm not in the groove of prepping either at the shore or on Monday at home yet. I need to get back into that.

Raging: trump saying he can pardon himself and not a damn person in Congress standing against that - is everyone familiar with the rule of law or do people not know what that is and what an oath to protect the Constitution means?; Senator Jeff Merkley not being allowed into the children jails the US is now running; everything about the Gestapo - you might call them ICE; trump attacking the Philadelphia Eagles who are by and large great community members. Although this article trump Goes to War With Philly; Immediately Loses made me laugh. Don't fuck with Philly. And to those saying keep the politics off the field, wanting equal treatment under the law no matter what color your skin is is not fucking politics. It's humanity and equality and civil rights and social justice and fuck, GET.ON.BOARD because thinking it's politics is part of the problem. I am a white woman and this makes me want to rip my hair out of my head and scream in people's faces, I cannot imagine what it is like to be a person of color trying to get people to see.

Knick knack paddy whack give a dog a bone broth

Bone broth is great for everyone. I make it for the dogs because their health is more attended to than ours.

There are a lot of powders out on the market right now but honestly? Make it yourself. It's super easy and MUCH cheaper. It's a great immune system booster and helps with allergies and food sensitivities. It's a superior joint supplement so help your dogs age more easily and feed them some bone broth with their food. Note: this is not in any way a food replacement.

Ingredients
Marrow bones - I keep some in the freezer, which is what you see below.
2 TBS Apple Cider Vinegar - I prefer Bragg's
Water
Directions
Put bones in a crockpot. Cover them with water plus an inch or so. Cook on low for at least 24 hours. I usually start them at night around 7 pm and let them go for 24 hours plus that overnight.

Remove bones (throw out, do not give to dogs) and allow liquid to cool. When refrigerated it should be a jelly-like consistency. There may be a skin of fat on the top that you can remove. Store in airtight jars. Bone broth doesn't last long like that so I keep one out and freeze the rest - leave plenty of space in jars when you freeze so they don't burst.

Warm a few tablespoons for about 10 seconds and put over dog food. Humans can eat this as well, and it's just as good for you.

And today...D-Day. When fascism was recognized and we recoiled and sent our bravest to fight like hell against it.

TWTW - the one with the family down the shore

I worked at the shore Thursday so was primed to head to the foggy boardwalk with my brother, sister-in-law, and the kids right after. Greek food and ice cream and Lola Jean fell dead asleep in her stroller, it was super cute. Dad and Carol arrived later.
Friday started out overcast but turned out to be hot and sunny after the fog burned off. Aubrey’s parents came down and we all enjoyed a long beach day. I finished a book, came home to Bruce's destruction, and enjoyed a great meal by Stephen & Aubrey.
We hit the boards at night to see Lola on the rides, smile at the smiliest baby Stephen, have ice cream, and I bought tie dye while wearing tie dye. Cool, cool. Stephen got the same shirt but a different variation because all tie dye is different, obviously.
Saturday it was supposed to rain all day but it didn’t, period. Kudos, weather peeps. I was happy they were wrong of course. So after some work on the house in the morning thanks to my Dad, we hit the beach again. Stephen did hotdogs and hamburgers on the grill and we went to the boards. I actually saw people attempting to hand out flat earth literature for a flat earth event and scoffing at the ignorance of those who wouldn’t take it (everyone). They wouldn’t give me any which made me sad because I wanted to read the crazy.
Sunday was windy and cold. Lots of morning lounging and cleaning up and making soap and talking about a RV trip in five years.
I was on the road for home by 2. MFD was in Harrisburg overnight so I did five loads of laundry, cleared out the fridge, took out the trash, picked up, listed some stuff on eBay, and made sure Gus got to sit with me all night since he stayed home this weekend.

Weekly food prep: breakfasts are cinnamon raisin bagels with cream cheese, snacks are strawberries and bananas, lunch is shredded buffalo chicken from the freezer on a roll or PBJ, and I'm finishing that pasta salad before I consider anything else. I also made a vat of iced coffee and have bone broth going for the dogs.

I loved the time with the fam in this new-ish tradition, especially Lola Jean and Baby Seeeeve. Today is my brother Stephen's actual birthday. Happy birthday! Love you so much.

How was your weekend?

Thursday Thoughts - heading for that Golden Gate I hope that I won't be too late

1. Most of my Thursday Thoughts titles reference song lyrics, after the hyphen. This one - San Francisco Days by Chris Isaak - is known to me from The Affair. One of my other favorites - Homecoming by Josh Ritter - is known to me from Billions. Keep it up, soundtracks of Showtime shows.

2. This Thursday Thoughts snuck up on me with being off Monday, getting home from the shore Tuesday night, trying to do all the laundry/make the bed/work at night/order food/be paying attention to MFD's campaign meeting immediately after getting home, packing up to go back to the shore last night after I got my hair done by the fabulous Kristi at Sensational Scissors. I'm looking forward to having tomorrow off.

3. MFD starts canvassing (read: going door to door for those not familiar) this weekend, and this is where we really begin living separate lives. The next two shore weekends are long-planned for me, and after that I am full in on my property manager role. He’ll be door knocking at home with awesome volunteers (Want to be one? Please? A few hours on a Saturday or Sunday once a month or more from June to October?). This separate but together will require a lot of patience and organization and coordination and of course you know I am short on the former, long on the latter two. But Tuesday night after a campaign meeting my most worrisome thought came while I was in the bathroom. When people are in my house and I’m not, will they think we are people who pull toilet paper from underneath? BECAUSE WE’RE FREAKING NOT, regardless of how MFD has put it on. Okay? Please know that. In all seriousness though if you can spare some time to door knock on weekends with his crew or during the week after work with me, or if you can write postcards or make phone calls, please let me know and I’ll put you in touch with his campaign manager. You do not need to live in the district to help him get elected. If you’d like to donate, you can do that here.

4. Gus stayed home this weekend. I hated leaving him there but it’s too much for every weekend at the shore due to all the walking. And Bruce Springsteen might have been Born in the USA but he is not good with the people in and out for canvassing. He is completely insane with joy at people coming in and very distracting and jumpy. So I have these two.

5. I hope you all read Abby Wambach's commencement speech for Barnard College and plan on being fucking wolves if you're not already. Also in that family, Abby's wife Glennon's organization Together Rising brought it this week, sorting out the very complicated immigration/kid issues and raising a shit ton of money in no time for those kids. Let's all be good humans.

6. That warms my heart especially with all the racist apologists and excuses going around this week. Every time something like the Roseanne shit goes down, I am reminded that the greater population doesn't know jack shit about free speech and its applications. Every time someone is fired from a private employer as a consequence of their actions people are all FREE SPEECH THOUGH. That’s not how freedom of speech works. You are free to say what you like. You are not free from the consequences among peers and private employers. Freedom of speech exists to protect citizens from government tyranny. Not to protect people refusing to examine the inherent racism in all of us.

7. And all the deaths in Puerto Rico. Things I say every day: it can’t get any worse/this has to be the bottom. But it can and it isn’t.

8. I won’t end on the dumpster fire every single day has become under this circus of an administration that has us watching the Showman while the men behind the curtain  carry out the true goal: systematically dismantling everything that protects the people of this country - consumer protections, education plans, environmental protections, etc. It's fucking nuts. You know what's not? Loving yourself. Thanks Alison for this awesome post and inviting me to be a part of it. I shared it yesterday but I'm sharing it again today because it's powerful. Love yourselves, people. No matter what and despite everything.

9. Reminder:
