Friday Five: Things I Paid Attention to this week

Yo yo yo! TGIF and MTV Raps. Do they even still do that? I don't know. It's been a while since I've shared some things that have caught my eye on the world wide web. If you click on the bolded words below, you will be taken for a ride on the information superhighway to something that tickled my fancy. Sharing is caring, so if you've read anything recently that you liked, please direct me to it!

1. The Library Post on Eat, Drink, and Be Lauren. Now you all KNOW I love the library so I super love this post. Libraries are a very under utilized resource that we are so lucky to have in this country. Free access to books and knowledge. So many people around the world would really love to have that.

2. Just Don't Do It on language: a feminist guide. My friend Heather shared this on Facebook. I read it and spent the better part of a day and a half thinking about it. One of my favorite thoughts from it: "This endless policing of women’s language—their voices, their intonation patterns, the words they use, their syntax—is uncomfortably similar to the way our culture polices women’s bodily appearance. Just as the media and the beauty industry continually invent new reasons for women to be self-conscious about their bodies, so magazine articles and radio programmes like the ones I’ve mentioned encourage a similar self-consciousness about our speech. The effect on our behaviour is also similar. Instead of focusing on what we’re saying, we’re distracted by anxieties about the way we sound to others. ‘Am I being too apologetic?’ and ‘Is my voice too high?’ are linguistic analogues of ‘is my nail polish chipped?’ and ‘do I look fat in this?’"

3. 27 Things You Should Always Have in Your Car. I am woefully lacking here. Like, even my first aid kit is actually sitting inside of my house. For my car and MFD's. Edited to add - this must be awesome because Jana shared this over at Jana Says today in her weekly round up. Have I mentioned how much I love weekly round ups? Check hers out today as I also hate everything that bothered her this week and because she included a hilarious shit her husband said incident.

4. This pizza spaghetti pie using spaghetti squash. Amy at Crazy Wise Woman shared this recipe yesterday and I promptly logged into my peapod order and added a spaghetti squash so I could make it.

5. Smile! You're on Candid Camera. I have no fifth link. Dun dun dunnnnnnn.

This is my first weekend home in a month and I'm pumped. I'm locking Summer Steph in the closet and getting shit done. Trust. And oh, Auntie Em, there's no place like home. Am I right?

I would be remiss if I signed off without wishing your favorite patient crusader and mine, Marla from Luck Fupus, a very happy birthday and a wonderful Month of Marla!

Have a good weekend, mon frers.

  1. Happiest birthday to our MarlaJan! Another gorgeous day! There really is no place like home to me! I have noticed
that I have been facackted this week. The summer is going by too quickly, as usual. My youngest chicken is starting his last semester in college. Donald Trump leading their polls. JMJ Why can't it be Warren Buffet??? Bonus to everything is the new grandchicken coming in September. Can't wait to rock that little baby and sing to her/him!!! Reflecting a lot and sleeping not too well. Much to be grateful for, though!!!
    Your ever-loving, Momma

  2. I am so dang proud of myself right now! I have nearly everything on that list in my car! I am just missing ducktape, matches/flare, shout wipes and road salt. And let's be honest...a rare occasion down here would call for the road salt. That spaghetti squash pizza needs to be a thing for me real soon! Have a great weekend!

  4. I really need to find my local library. When I was growing up in middle school and high school, the library was only my solace. Half price books kinda does that for me, but not quite the same. Adding to my August bucket list.

  5. Loved that library post, thanks for sharing! I didn't know about the plug in so my day was made!! Excited to pin and try out that pizza spaghetti. I have some of those things in my car so I need to step up my game. Have a great weekend!

  7. I hope that list for the car involves taco bell wrappers & empty water bottles

  8. My car is pretty lacking on anything but beach gear and junk, of course I don't usually go further than 10 miles from home anyway. Home is where my heart is!

  9. Just Don't Do It - fantastic article! I'm guilty of judging women for uptalk but the point they make is spot on. Uptalk and a lot of other things that we nitpick on are not indicative of low confidence - they're just stereotypically "female" mannerisms and phrases. I don't have to dress like a man to be good at my job and I shouldn't have to talk like one either. I'll say sorry as much as I please, dammit!

  10. I'm sure im lacking badly on the car list too! Going to check it out now. I'm going to have a similar weekend and try to be productive with a splash of lazy.

  12. I'm excited to check out the feminist language post. I love having discussions on gender and things so this is right up my alley!

  13. The link to Lauren's library post isn't working. I did already read it though, so I know which post and I agree!
I don't have a car. I'm reluctant to click that link lest I find more things I should be carrying in my purse.

  15. After being out and about, it's nice to come home, I agree! While I love vacation time, I love being in my own home with my own things, on a schedule again :). Have a great weekend in!

  16. What a fun surprise! Thanks for sharing my post - hopefully even a paper book lover like you got something from it.

My car is woefully under prepared... I think I have like, three things on the list. I should at least try to add a few more. And spaghetti squash intrigues me but I have yet to try it. Yay for being home for a weekend - this is our first without plans in far too long.

  17. lol @ #5. i don't want to click that car link because i am 100% sure i dont have a single thing on it lol. libraries are the bomb, we are very lucky to have them! thanks for sharing the feminist language post, very interesting!

  18. omg yes to the library!!! i just wish that there wasn't a giant line for all the popular books but just as well...i can wait for them by reading older books that are still awesome.

  19. I find the sudden (or maybe it's just being brought to my attention to the first time) interest in women's language patterns—and the subsequent "backlash" (for lack of a better word) on the interest—to be really interesting and definitely something worth discussing. There's actually a podcast in my queue waiting to be listened to on this very topic. Thanks for sharing the link! Great read.

  20. I LOVE the library! I mean cmon free books man!
I am also in a sad state of affairs concerning emergency supplies in my car. In fact I realized this morning as I drove my little nanny kid to preschool and he sneezed and proceeded to have a giant booger dripping down his face that I had ZERO tissues. It was ugly. Lesson learned. Lesson learned indeed!

  21. I think I have some car prep to do!

  22. I am seriously lacking in the emergency supplies department. Isn't that kind of stuff supposed to come second nature for moms? I missed that gene somewhere.

  23. ohh i gotta check all of these out. especially the library one and what i should have in my car!

  24. I think you've officially transferred Summer Steph to Summer Sara... and I am quickly headed into IDGAF territory.... although there's no time for that. I blame the heat. And stupid people.

  25. Great roundup. I need to check these out and catch up on blog reading. I love my library and always use it. Hope your weekend is very productive!

  26. I really liked Lauren's library post. Sometimes I do forget how much you can do (or get) at the library for free! The library by my house even hosts these great author nights that I would love to attend more of. That's how I found LI author Charlee Fam and her book. Great free programs for kids too! Have a wonderful weekend!

  27. haha I probably shouldn't check the car link out should I - I probably have everything on that list and then some.
Also Amy's pizza pie - yum!

  28. I'ma check out that 27 things to have in your car link cuz I know I probably don't have half of that. I love the library, I take my son there every other week. Mostly during the school year. It's awesome, so many books galore :) I particularly have an affinity for cookbooks. :) Have a great one Stephanie! -Iva

  29. That is a lot of shit to keep in the car. Where the hell are you supposed to put it all? I can't handle a cluttered/dirty car.

I feel like I am cheating the library system...I still have my MI card and account info, so I can do audio and e-books from there and then I got one here. Two libraries, whee!!!! Now if I could just find more time to read all of these books I have access to, that would be super.

  30. i keep a gun in my car. a bubble gun that lights up. that should be on the list! ;)

  31. The language around feminism is really interesting. It certainly impacts people's outlook on the topic.

  32. I looooooove spaghetti squash! I'm gonna have to check that recipe out. Pete and I are on the same schedule now... it'd be nice to plan some meals ahead that we can both enjoy together.

  33. #2 - I've become much more conscious about what I say and what has been said to me in the past that has effects that I didn't even realize were happening. Also, I just read a book (it will be in Show Us Your Books, of course). The author seems to embrace her sexuality and is quite open with her tales of promiscuity. I have no problem with that. But, she also loosely used the terms sluts and whores. I did have a problem with that. It seemed awfully hypocritical. I don't think I'd have noticed that until I started becoming much more conscious and aware of the effects of language.

  34. I'm definitely reading that feminist article after this. I just had a conversation recently at work about how aggressive women always get a bad wrap like oh you need to tone it down. Just because I'm an opinionated, smart woman doesn't mean I need to make myself less. It's the same as saying to a woman that their personality is too much. Like why is a man's personality not too much but a woman's is?
I just read Fear of Flying which is supposed to be a feminist book and while there were things I didn't love, the message in it really is still applicable now. While some things have changed, many things are still the same. It's the old slut shaming, you need a man to be fulfilled argument that still prevails today.
