I'm going to need a minute

Last Thursday night, I sat on my couch and watched a daughter introduce her mother as a major party presidential nominee for President of the United States.

Until I saw it, I don't think I believed it would ever happen.  In fact, it would take me a few days to really understand how important it is to me because I was so overwhelmed that it actually happened.

It's very, very important. Regardless of your politics, it's huge.

If you're a white man who has always seen someone who looks like you in power, you probably think it isn't a big deal. If you know how hard the road has been and how many woman have walked it, you know it's monumental. From an article on USA Today:

  • This female nomination came 168 years and nine days after the first women's rights conference in Seneca Falls, NY
  • This female nomination came 150 years after Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton founded the first organization dedicated to suffrage for women of all races
  • This female nomination came 144 years after Susan B. Anthony was convicted for voting in the 1872 presidential election
  • This female nomination came 96 years after the approval of the 19th Amendment barring gender discrimination in voting
  • This female nomination came with thoughts for suffragettes Alice Paul, who in an effort to win the right for women to vote was on a hunger strike while confined to a jail psychiatric ward and force fed raw eggs through a tube; Lucy Burns, also on a hunger strike to win the right to vote, held down by five people and fed through her nostrils; Dora Lewis, knocked out by guards who threw her against a metal railing over her insistence that women be allowed the right to vote
This nomination is a big fuck you to everyone who has ever said
girls don't do that / don't be so bossy / Smile! / that's not a career for women / you do that like a girl / calm down / he picks on you because he likes you / just deal with it, you're lucky to have a job / women can't handle that / you do that well for a woman / you're too emotional / you're not emotional enough, what's wrong with you? / she was asking for it  / you should be at home / slut / she must wear the pants in that relationship / insert yours here

This nomination is
encouragement / empowerment / strength / hope / possibility / reassurance / insert yours here

Things will never be the same for little girls in this country again, in a fantastic way.

Currently...January

Keeping a list...like Jill Biden's.

Taking...a page out of Steph G's book and using all of my nail polishes once through before repeating any at all. Nails and toes count but my toes are currently on a nail polish hiatus for a month. I like to give them room to breath over the winter. Sorry nails, you need to work all year. I haven't counted my polishes, but I've already used three this year so far. If I don't like it and don't want to wear it, it goes.

Drinking...All the iced coffee I can. It's 99 cents, you guys. You know, because it's January. I say put your iced wares on sale any time, DD. I don't stop drinking cold drinks when it gets cold, iced coffee included.

Resisting...the urge to paint the built in bookcases in the basement. Because painting is a pain in the ass and I'm a messy painter. And because painting them will lead me to want to repaint the rest of the basement which is the only room aside from the bathroom we've never painted. And because MFD always protests my painting. So...you'll probably find me buying paint one night next week.

Reading...Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen. I'm not a die hard Austen fan, but based on this post by Kristen at See You in a Porridge I thought I'd like this one.

Playing...Trivia Crack like it's the only thing left to do on earth.

Watching...Downton Abbey and The Fall - it's back for season two. Lady Mary is looking fierce on Downton in her wanton lady frock and Jamie Dornan is the handsomest serial killer ever on The Fall. I'm behind on everything else. Oh...I'm watching Lockup too. I blame Laura & Chris.

Trying...to keep to healthy eating 90% of the time instead of 50% like I was doing last year. I think I'm at about 80% right now. It helps that MFD is doing this too since he is the typically the purveyor of junky processed crap. I'm not doing any whole 30/paleo/supplement/program/voodoo, just healthy food portioned well with the processed or not so healthy food making up only 10% of the week.
Ground turkey taco'd up with sauteed onions and orange pepper and diced tomatoes for lettuce wraps
Loving...This. Trust. Not everything is meant for us. Don't waste your energy trying to break down a door that's not yours. Focus your energy on finding the door that is.

Laughing at...man illness. Tis the season! Ladies, you are well acquainted with it I'm sure.

Your current doings? I'm back to putting these currently posts on the schedule once a month.

Wake up ladies.

You are not equal to men. Across the board, you don’t receive equal pay for equal work. Your maternity leave is still a bit dicey as the FMLA doesn't cover those who work for smaller companies and guarantees only unpaid leaves. And still, STILL, people want to legislate what you can do with your own uterus. And they’ll put your health in jeopardy to prove it.

Yesterday the Komen Foundation announced that they are cutting funding to Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood provides an array of services to people who cannot afford to get them elsewhere, including cancer screenings and breast exams. Wait a minute…isn’t the Komen Foundation dedicated to improving the health of women, particularly breast health? Why would they break that partnership?

It seems that Komen has bowed under anti-choice pressure. Look…whether you are pro-choice or anti-choice is your business. To me, the bottom line is that we should not be placing laws on women’s bodies. Why this issue even exists is completely beyond me. And why the religious right is using their large numbers and tidy piles of cash to apply political pressure to what is supposed to be a women’s health organization into cutting funding to a healthcare provider is incomprehensible.

Unlike abortion, women's health is EVERYONE's business. I will not support an organization that is anti-women. In my eyes, Komen has just joined those ranks.

During and immediately after college, I went to Planned Parenthood for my annuals and exams because I couldn’t afford to go anywhere else. Contrary to what the radical right would like you to believe, Planned Parenthood is not an abortion house.

Ladies, I implore you to open your eyes and ears to what’s going on around you. Don’t just glance at headlines. Your rights are still at stake. Roe vs Wade is not set in stone. Jackholes keep trying to overturn it, and what do they use as leverage? YOUR HEALTH.

It’s time to push back, vocally and mightily, on your elected officials. Hit organizations that are anti-women where it hurts – in their pockets.

Newsflash to the assholes behind this and to the cowardly leadership at Komen: cancer doesn’t give a shit which side of the abortion issue you stand on. It comes for everyone.

I denounce Komen for putting politics before women’s health and bowing to political bullying. Women need you, Komen, and you failed them. I apologize in advance to my people who ask for donations for their Komen walks...The Komen Foundation will not get another cent from me, even if they retract this idiocy and fund Planned Parenthood again. Planned Parenthood, my check is in the mail.
