Netflix, shall I compare thee to a summer's day?

via
The Evil Asslord Comcast has chosen this week to fuck with me and raise my monthly payment for zero reason. Of course this is the week our Internet has been on the fritz nightly as well, requiring a technician to come out today. But back to the cable bill.

As you Comcast customers may be aware, this is nothing new and happens at least once a year. Two years ago I had a manager lock me into a rate only to have it go up before the time period was over. I called and had to bully them into keeping their word.

After 12 years, I've had it. Cable is being cancelled. MFD says he's with me, but he lingers long over My Strange Addiction instead of catching up on The Good Wife, which he says he wants to do before I pull the plug.

Get a move on, Mike. My rage is going to spontaneously combust to form a wrathful demon not unlike something one would see in Rosemary's Baby or The Exorcist if I don't get to spew it on them soon.

I am acquiring this antenna so I can watch Jeopardy, Channel 6 Action News, and awards shows. We have a Roku in the living room to stream Amazon, Netflix, Hulu (currently not subscribing to Hulu).

I don't watch a ton of TV. When I do, it's rarely in real time. Showtime and HBO are poised to offer standalone streaming service this year, as is CBS. It'll be all good and soon we will no longer be living under the thumb of Comcast, the shysters with black souls, for cable.

Last week Kelly at A Lovely Life, Indeed tagged me in a Netflix post. Timely, given the Comcast fuckery going down right now. Shows I've loved on Netflix:
House of Cards. Kevin Spacey is everything.
The Fall. Gillian Anderson and serial killers. Yes and yes.
The Killing. I will love Netflix forever for making this show stretch to a final season.
Orange is the New Black. I thought I wouldn't like this show, but I do.

Things I'm planning on watching in the future:
-The West Wing
-Peaky Blinders
-Call the Midwife
-Breaking Bad
-Luther
-Boss
-Lillyhammer
-Broadchurch

Due to my lack of Valentining, you might have surmised that I'm not a lover of the day, but I do love love and I also love a lot of other things. Like you, dear reader. And Netflix. If you've enjoyed this, perhaps you might enjoy my big love post from 2013.

Happy Friday. Damn the man! Save the Empire!

  1. The whole cable business as a whole is a total rip off. Thank goodness for Netflix. I couldn't get into House of Cards but loved The Killing, and Orange. Gotta check out the Fall since I keep seeing it mentioned.

  2. If my MIL didn't live with us, we would get rid of DirecTV and live off of our Roku and the antenna for local channels. I loved OITNB; I didn't think I would like it either. My husband loves Breaking Bad. And Sons of Anarchy. And the Borgias. I wish it had more movies. Thanks for doing the tag. :-) Happy Friday. We're awaiting another foot of snow. Again. Cheers for the weekend!

  3. I wonder sometimes why I still have cable, and think of it as an expensive background noise, lol. Netflix is my addiction, lol.

  4. Ryan and I have never had cable (since moving in together). There are so many other options now, and especially with all the issues you're talking about, it's just not worth it. We actually use like 5 different things: Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, HBO Go (borrowed, but will be paying for as soon as cable is not required), something called "Crunchy Roll" for the guys' anime shows. It's actually gotten a little ridiculous, but I'm not paying for any of it, so I guess I can't complain!

  5. Ooooh, I'm almost caught up on House of Cards. I love that Kevin Spacey. We've been watching The League, Workaholics, still trying to finish up Breaking Bad. I recognize him from the zillion 50 Shades commercials that have taken over my TV and You Tube, the guy in The Fall is the Christian Gray dude, right? I think I could get behind his being a serial killer. If we didn't have to watch hockey, we would have gotten rid of that Comcast shit long ago. Damn the man! I still thank you for introducing me to The Affair. That shit needs to come back!

  6. Thanks for this! I am always overwhelmed by Netflix and what to watch. We used to have Dish but found it was a waste of money in the summertime when we are never home...the DVR would just fill up with stuff we didn't have time to watch. So, I cancelled and we binge on Netflix all winter. I don't think you'll miss cable.

  7. I've been trying to convince Dave of switching away from cable but he's hesitant too because he likes "flipping through the channels" (eff that ish!), he just signed us up for another two years and I was so pissed at him for that.

  8. We used one of those antenna for the superbowl game where we don't have cable and it worked very well. I'm wondering why my parents haven't gotten rid of cable yet other than NCIS reruns not on Netflix yet. We went 12 years without it, so I know we could do it again.

  9. I hate Comcast. I only have basic cable and Internet and pay a ton. They charge way too much but I love watching the news while I get ready in the am and can't do w/o it quite yet. Good call for you though since you love all those shows available on Netflix!

  10. LOL i work for the biggest telco in canada and they do price increases a lot as well. most of the time, it's around specialty channels instead of the base packages but it still pisses people off to no end. if we didn't get our entire package for free (grandfathered plan, thank the lord), i woudn't even have cable because fuck those rates.

  11. Broadchurch was FANTASTIC. Breaking Bad is always a good idea. I didn't get into Lilyhammer and the book of Call the Midwife, I thought, was better than the show.
We have a Netgear box and I haven't figured out how to stream Amazon through it. Is it just on your Roku or did you have add it somehow?
My parents have been complaining about Comcast for years. I have a love/hate relationship with DirecTV.

  12. I'm a Netflix freak, too! We can't wait for House of Cards in a couple of weeks and you HAVE to watch Breaking Bad next - best show ever!

  13. I cancelled my cable in early December and have not looked back and really don't even miss it. With things like Netflix and Hulu now I save a ton of money and don't even need cable!

  14. I would be free of satellite t.v. if we didn't live in East Bumblef--k.

  15. love the fall. and scared of that guy! whenever i see him in the 50 shades trailers, i just think he's a serial killer!!

  16. Tyson and I have talked about doing this and the only thing holding us back is sports, how do you stream gold, football, basketball, and baseball? As soon as I figure that out Time Warner is dunzo!

  17. Verizon has been excellent, but it is expensive. With Comcast, our internet was going down every other second. Extremely annoying. I am really loving Empire! And, of course, The Blacklist. We watch a ton of soccer, too, and college basketball. Have never watched any netflix stuff.
    Early Happy VD! #allyouneedislove

  18. I never watch anything in real time either. It's been bad lately, my brother gave me his xfinity password so I've been OD-ing on stuff like Vanderpump Rules and Real Housewives. Kevin loooooves it haha. Check out the Paradise on Netflix. If you like historical type shows it's a really good one.

  19. I haven't had cable for 5 years and I don't miss it a bit!

  20. You know I love me a good Empire Records quote!! yeah I cut cable, I don't even miss it. I never watched it, I only had it because it was free with my old apartment. I love Netflix though, and yes to everything on your list! Except I haven't seen the Fall yet. But I just started watching X-Files because I've never seen it, so I figure it's good to love Scully first and then move on to the Fall.

  21. Remember last year when House of Cards started Valentine's Day weekend so we all had automatic dates with our TVs and no need to find alternate plans? I wish they would have kept it out after the leak this week. I like making myself watch new things on Netflix. I started a show called America's Book of Secrets the other day that was pretty entertaining while I was cleaning the house. I would love to be cable-less but until the NFL offers to let all consumers stream all games in real time a la Directv Sunday Ticket, I'm a prisoner.

  22. We pay a SHIT TON for our TV, and we've had enough. We're canceling also. Thanks for the antenna rec--J loves his jeopardy so that will come in handy. We'll rely on the subscription services like y'all. He's concerned about missing his sports--but he's never home for them #1 and #2 if he is home for them, it'll give us an excuse to go out somewhere to watch.

  23. We didn't have cable for 3 years! Antenna and a Roku for streaming works great.

  24. We cancelled our Comcast two years ago and went with another provider and have never been happier - they are the absolute worst!! But Netflix is the best! xo, Biana - BlovedBoston

  25. I hate Comcast. I can't even count how many times I've called them & bitched them out. When I move I will definitely not be going with Comcast if I can at all avoid it, & will most likely not even be getting cable. I have Netflix & don't watch TV in real time either so Hulu would be fine with me. My only concern is The Walking Dead, which is the ONLY show I watch in real time...and isn't available on Hulu.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I struggle with this decision too. I only really need Comcast for internet and maybe not even that. Could switch providers probably there too. I love Netflix, sorry I resisted so long. It is perfect for my current love of hiding away and escaping reality. Happy Vday!

    ReplyDelete
  27. That is such BS, right? My internet keeps raising the price like every 6 months and there's nothing we can do cause there's no other internet service in our area! I feel your pain!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Ugh don't get me started on providers going up on their bills. So infuriating!!!! We have satellite right now which is just so pointless because we watch nothing but football in real time anyways. I have not seen any of the shows that you suggested so I will have to look in to them! Have a great weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I haven't had cable in almost a decade and the ONLY time I miss it is when I'm always a year behind on shows like The Walking Dead. Other than that...most shows I watch are on either Netflix, Amazon Prime or online somewhere. I think dropping it is always a good decision.

  30. call the midwife is on my list too!
we don't have cable - our choices are AT&T and Comcast, and I heard some much about Comcast I was like no. But we had so many issues trying to set the damn thing up with AT&T -like we'd take days off work so they could come and set it up and they wouldn't show up, so we just gave up. We don't watch anything in real time either, so it's pointless. Though if I could have HGTV I wouldn't complain - but there are some HGTV shows on Netflix (I've watched them all, sigh) and there is some thing coming out soon that dish is doing where you can have certain channels or whatever for like $20 a month, I can't remember what it's called, but we might get that when it comes out.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm into the idea of giving up cable but for sporting events: ESPN & Fox Sports are what's holding us back. Cable is so freaking expensive and, as you mentioned, with channels getting behind stand alone services, it's a lot easier to get rid of it these days. I'm all for saving whatever ungodly amount AT&T autobills me for each month.

If you've never watched Damages, it's one I got sucked into on netflix and LOVED!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I asked Verizon about just having phone & internet, it was slightly more expensive than having all 3. How did you get just internet?

    ReplyDelete
  33. When we moved, we got rid of Comcast. And where we live, Comcast isn't even a choice as a service provider. As in, when they put down the lines, they didn't think where I live would ever build up and now it's too expensive to put them in or something like that. It is a pleasure to not have them.

I love Netflix. So much. I can't believe a few years ago I was going to get rid of it. Clearly I was insane. I'm waiting until the child goes back to school next week to commence watching The Fall. And you know how I feel about The Killing.

We need to celebrate Rex Manning Day somehow.

  34. I hear ya. I loathe Comcast with the fire if a thousand suns! I've been contemplating ditching them for a long time and never cut the cord! Ha. I think I need to get myself some backup like you have and then I'll be able to take the leap. What is Roku??

    ReplyDelete

    1. The roku is a wonderful device which enables you to stream netflix, Amazon Prime, hulu, etc.

  35. I could not be more excited for the new season of House of Cards!

And I hear ya on cancelling cable.. we are THIS close to doing that as well. Between Netflix and Hulu, I feel we'll have it covered. If there's a big game we can always watch it with friends or head to a sports bar. I am over the high cost of cable, and like you I hardly ever watch tv in real time anyway :-P

    Happy Friday!

  36. Netflix really has some good shows. I dont get all of them because Im not in the US but I get most. I rarely even turn on my tv (and when I do its to watch scandal, E or HGTV) so I dont know why I still pay for cable in my apartment. Good thing to think about.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I keep hearing about House of Cards. I might start watching.

I do love Orange Is The New Black. Excited for new episodes in June!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Fun fact: my husband engineered the Mohu leaf, the #1 antenna on Amazon! You should totally do one of those instead of the Wineguard!!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I love Netflix but I could NEVER give up cable. NEVER. I actually looked into cutting our channels (to cut our bill) and in the end I couldn't do it. No Bravo?! OH THE HUMANITY!

    ReplyDelete
  40. We cut cable 2 years ago and we don't miss it one little bit! We of course have Hulu Plus, Netflix, & Prime but Prime we got for the shipping and Netflix we already had. We buy shows if we can't get them elsewhere from iTunes or Amazon, like the Walking Dead and Mad Men. All cable companies are so jacked, it took me a total of over 4 hours to cancel our internet from Time Warner when we moved (it was crazy).

    ReplyDelete
  41. Netflix hasn't made it to Australia yet. They say it's coming. But, I don't get too excited until it gets here, and I see the prices. The cost of everything is over-inflated here. I don't doubt this will be something else. So, I read. And watch British comedy and variety shows that I never watched when I lived in the States on BBC or UKTV. I'm SO behind in series that I feel so out of the loop sometimes!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Ours just went up $9. I envy you're ability to cut it! I still don't think I'm there yet, even though I haven't watched anything live in years.
