the Veterans Day weekend that was

After getting my car cleaned for the first time in like two years and picking up a few groceries at Redner's, I hightailed it to the Trenton Train Station to pick up my friend Misty. We got Steve's Steaks (too lazy to drive down to Jim's, my preferred cheesesteak), put pajamas on, drank liquor while lounging on the couch, and I forced Misty into Duck Dynasty reruns.

I haven't been sleeping well. Saturday was my only chance to sleep in and try to recoup.
Then the President of the Ahole Wakeup Committee decided otherwise.
Thanks a lot Gus! Even Geege wanted to keep sleeping.

No matter how many times I use it, this cup always makes me laugh.
C O F F E E.

Misty and I met Alicia, Amanda and Jennifer from our knot.com monthly wedding board for lunch
at the Cock 'n Bull in Lahaska. Are you laughing? I am because I'm five.
The food was good and the company was lovely.
It was great to have a leisurely lunch with ladies I've talked to on the daily online
since the year before our weddings.
We split baked brie as an app, and I had a side salad, beef burgundy and pumpkin pie.
The pie sent me into Food Coma territory, but I couldn't resist.

Food prep, including hoagie dip.
We MIGHT be able to get a sliver out mayo of the container in the fridge. Right?
Hoagie dip is super easy. Here's my version:
1/2 lb cooked ham, 1/2 lb genoa salami, 3/4 lb american cheese, shredded lettuce, two tomatoes seeded and chopped, one onion chopped, oregano/S&P to taste, and 1-2 cups mayo.
The key to good hoagie dip is to cut everything super small. I do the lunchmeat and cheese in the food processor (thanks for the tip a few years ago Julie!).
Mix it all together and serve with hoagie rolls.
I usually do the prep the day before and mix it on the day I'm serving it.

+

Bacon cheeseburger puffs from Plain Chicken.
These were good, best eaten right away and served with ketchup.
I used whole wheat baking mix, sauteed onion with the ground beef, and doubled the recipe.
I flash froze the rest of the balls so they're ready to go when I need them next.
I probably won't make them again after that - I prefer the bacon double cheeseburger dip.

My Boston-based BFF and her man arrived to spend the night on their whirlwind tour of NJ & PA.
It was so great to see them, we haven't seen them since WedFest in July.

+

Other friends rolled in, and we had a fun night as always.
I am beyond thankful for my friends. They are my family.
That includes you, Dutch.

+

All fun must come to an end. Mine came at 6 a.m. when I got up to take Misty to the train station. We went to bed around 3. That was a rough ride! And foggy.
The experience called for a pork roll egg and cheese and two more hours of sleep.

+

After the fog burned off, Sunday was gorgeous. Amazing weather. Thank you universe!
I threw open all the windows, changed beds in both spare rooms, did a ton of wash, and watched some Bada Bling wedding show and a lot of Duck Dynasty with Michelle.
Then I sat outside with my boys for a little, reading and enjoying the day.
I was going to dust the basement...dust will keep. Good weather won't.

Family dinner for my aunt's 50th at Taormina's.
If I'm eating at an italian restaurant, chances are very good that I'm getting the piccata dish.

Thank you for your service and protection, Veterans.

TV catch up and early to bed

the weekend that was

No cooking, very limited sleep, minimal hausfrauing because MFD rocked and did most of it for me...just lots of quality time with friends and family that leaves me with a full heart.

Back on the chain gang.

Time to refuel

This actually is a burnt out light bulb.
MAN. My light bulb is burnt out you guys. I'm busy at work, I have a zillion errands to run, I can't catch up on hausfrauing, my mind is going a mile a minute all the time. I'm feeling the pull from many directions, and pressure to do and be from all sides. My brain seriously felt like it might fall out of my head yesterday.

This morning I thought about the small things that made me smile over the past week and it helped me relight my fire enough to switch it into gear and finish this week out in ass kicking style.
  • Sleeping with the windows open
  • New nail polish
  • Catching Overboard on tv
  • Staying up late to finish a good book
  • Sleeping in
  • Laughing so much my cheeks and stomach hurt
  • Dreaming about soft ice cream
  • Found money
  • Seeing lots of sweet mullets in person
  • A successful new recipe
  • A coupon for a free iced coffee
  • Two vats of iced coffee in my fridge
  • Spending time with my BFF
  • Hearing one of my more obscure favorite songs on the radio
  • The arrival of US Magazine in the mailbox just as the weekend is starting
  • Leftovers from my neighbor =  don't need to pack my lunch
  • A cheery little pitcher
  • Drying lavender
  • Kisses from my dogs
  • Getting a video of my brother's first college soccer game from my mom since I couldn't be there
  • A funky bottle adds a little disco to dish doing
  • Fruit in a bowl
  • Turning off the Republican National Convention and going to bed
  • A shopping trip with MFD
  • The smell of baby powder
  • Brother's Pizza
  • Getting veggies from my uncle's garden
  • Brie
  • A three day weekend looming in the not so distant future
What's getting you over the hump today?

p.s. I mentioned coffee twice in that list. That calls for another cup. Cheers.

Cause down the shore everything's alright...

If I could live anywhere, I'd live at the Jersey shore - not the fist pumping Jersey Shore shore - but Strathmere, Cape May, Ocean City? I'd live there in a second. I grew up going to Ocean City, and through the years migrated to other shores: Sea Isle, North Wildwood, Cape May, Strathmere. Some of my best memories were made down the shore, and not to be new agey, but I feel very much myself there. MFD feels the same way, which is why we chose to get married down there.

The shore is laid back, easy, no fuss. Throw some clothes in a bag and go. I pack my beach bag with a big hat, long sleeves for when the wind turns between 3 - 4 p.m., sunblock, two books, crosswords, twizzlers, and plums or nectarines, and I'm content to be at the beach all day.

I like it when it's sunny or overcast. I like the beach in the spring, fall, winter. I like it when it's raining.

I love to travel to places I've never been, but when it comes right down to it, I'd choose the shore over any other destination. Every time I go down, I'm reminded of so many great times shared with people I adore. Since I'm heading down this weekend, here's a little through the years kaleidoscope.

The cure for anything is salt water - sweat, tears, or the sea.
~Isak Dinesen
For whatever we lose (like a you or a me)
it's always ourselves we find in the sea.
- e.e. cummings
hark, now hear the sailors cry, smell the sea, and feel the sky
let your soul & spirit fly, into the mystic...
~Van Morrison

A beach was a fine place to come to terms with all the cycles of the universe.
~Pat Conroy, Beach Music
To me there has never been anything more evocative of
summer and wildness and bittersweet joy than a sea wind.
Anne Rivers Siddons, Outer Banks
In still moments by the sea life seems large-drawn and simple.
It is there we can see into ourselves.
~Rolf Edberg
There is one spectacle grander than the sea, that is
the sky; there is one spectacle grander than the sky,
that is the interior of the soul.
~Victor Hugo, Les Misérables
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free,
Silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands,
With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves,
Let me forget about today until tomorrow.
― Bob Dylan

The sea is emotion incarnate. It loves, hates, and weeps.
It defies all attempts to capture it with words and rejects all shackles.
No matter what you say about it, there is always that which you can't.
~Christopher Paolini, Eragon

I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each.
-- T. S. Eliot

We'll be making more shore memories this weekend with Amanda and Frank.

It's nice to have something to look forward to in the middle of the week, no?

Wishing you all a stellar Wednesday,

My Two Kims

Photo: luxmillionaire.com
Friendship is one of the greatest luxuries of life.
                             -Edward Everett Hale

I am fortunate to have wonderful friends from all time periods in my life. But there's something about the friends you grew up with - who know things about you that you've forgotten about yourself, who have watched you react to situations for years, who have seen your face in triumph and despair, who don't need to be brought up to speed on your history because they were there living it with you - that ensures that you're always your truest self in their presence, because that's who they know you to be. They know everything you've been and done. They've seen you at your ugliest and they love you anyway. They've answered your 4 a.m. phone calls. It's a beautiful thing and I am so grateful to have such close friends from my formative years.

Too often we take our friendships for granted. Ask yourself, where would you be without them? When the rest of the world walks out, your friends are walking in.

Two of my best friends are named Kim. They were both born in June. They are both beautiful, kind, smart and funny in their own ways. We've known each other for over 20 years. We've been through the wash together. They are my family. They've taught me about friendship, life, and myself. Although we are all very different, in them I often catch glimpses of a second self.

It's lame of me to group them together just because their names are Kim and they're both June babies. When I am a full time writer I will rectify this oversight. We've had so many experiences together, I could write a book. And maybe I will.

My Kims are my cotton - they're woven into the fabric of my life. They are integral parts of my story. Although we don't live close anymore, and we don't often speak on the phone because we all hate talking on the phone, there isn't distance in our hearts. When we get together, we revert back to what we've always been together - friends who talk and talk and drink wine and talk and talk and pull shenanigans. And that's how it should be with your true people.

KVS is creative, introspective, independent. She loves to travel, has a weakness for jeans and dogs, is famous for her sangria and witch's brew, and together we survived an angry ocean incident in Puerto Rico. We saved our bucket of beer, too. She makes jewelry. She excels at karaoke.

Kim S is adventurous, goal-oriented, independent. She loves to shake her money maker on the dance floor, has a weakness for boots, and is a fellow cackler and Ocean City lover. She is a fan of the nap, the velour jumpsuit, the Flyers and the Eagles (that can be a sad and mad thing). She was my maid of honor and we email daily.

I know my two Kims will always be there, whenever, for whatever I need. They are my adolescent, college, and adult friends all rolled into one. They have lifetime seats in my front row.

I love you both and wish you the happiest birthday month!

xoxo
