Find and cultivate that baseline wellness

Several things about this current earth simulation makes happiness feel a little out of reach many days.
I don't think sustained happiness is possible - I believe you need the lows to appreciate those highs. But existing in a more even-keeled state - should we call it contentment in the now while looking forward to more growth and change? - is better for the cortisol levels, and keeping those cortisol levels in check is crucial for overall health and well being. Toxic positivity and consistent negativity are equally bad. Realism and authenticity serve me well.

A state of contentment in the now helps us let go of things we cannot change, foster healthier relationships, and mind our health. When we exist in a generally happy state are more productive, creative, and resilient, and they're also better able to cope with stress. How to get to that state?

1. Spend Time With Loved Ones
Spending time with people you care about is one of the best ways to boost your mood. Regular check ins via text, phone, facetime, email, and in person when you can make it happen make a difference and remind us we're not alone out here. Make an effort to stay connected and boost you sense of baseline contentment.

2. Get Moving
Exercise releases endorphins, which have mood-boosting effects. A moderate amount of exercise is the key to happiness—too little and you won't see any benefits, but too much is too much too. I am not a joyful exerciser. I find activities I enjoy - walking, riding my bike - and make it a part of my regular routine, which improves my overall mood and sense of well-being. Add in some pushups and squats and mini weight work and that is something I can commit to keeping up with. And grounding! As in your bare feet, into the earth. Please try this in practice.

3. Help Others
When you do something nice for someone else, it feels good. Whether you volunteer your time or  perform random acts of kindness, helping others is a great way to make yourself feel good and bring more happiness into your life. Find a way to help people that assimilates into your schedule and bank account, and make it a priority.

4. Rituals
I love my routine, but I am always honing it. Sleep is an enormous player when it comes to your health, and if you are anything like me, lack of sleep makes you an unhappy troll. I started having sleep issues, and talked to my doctor (holistic practice) about melatonin vs CBD and chose CBD after realizing melatonin has the opposite effect for me. Using CBD can help with relaxation, which I need at night, something like Delta 8 THC Vape Carts or Early Bird gummies - my friends, you can get this shit in the mail. What a time to be alive. CBD creams are amazing as well. I've added that and more consistent dry brushing to my routine recently.

5. Do Something New
Trying new things can help break up the monotony of everyday life and give you a sense of excitement and adventure. It doesn't have to be anything big—just something that you wouldn't normally do.

6. Do Something You Love Every Day
Make time for activities that make you feel good, whether it's reading, painting, hiking, biking, cooking, or anything else that brings joy into your life. If you’re always working or busy or feel like you’re about to burn out, that does not lead to baseline wellness. Make your rest and leisure habits and  hobbies more of a priority. It’ll make such a difference to your happiness levels.

7. Be Grateful For What You Have
It's easy to get caught up in what we don't have and forget about what we do, and that is a recipe for all things to start going to shit. If you don't already do this, every day, take a few moments to reflect on the things you're thankful for.

Keep on keeping on out there, my friends. I hope you always have something to look forward to...today, this weekend, next month, next year.

Happy Friday! Go Phils.

March Agenda

Birthday month coming in hot! Not that hot, since I used this as an intro picture showing my shit up table, floors that are finally getting redone this spring, and dog on the table where you know, dogs do not belong but Bender doesn't know that.

ANYWAY

March's visible monthly to do list:

1. Continue no buy for unnecessary items/mindless buying/consuming.
2. Continue daily walks - now in the 40/40, 40 min of exercise a day for the Lent period, which I observe in absolutely no other way.
3. Stretch daily. I have never been a stretcher and I really feel that at what will be 43 this month so I must focus on it. My brain does not like yoga but my body likes yoga stretches (not pose holding) so I'm looking for something I can do at home that's not all yoga-y but has the stretching. Any recommendations?
4. Chiropractor & acupuncturist & possibly doctor because after a year it might be time to investigate this neck problem further than acu/chiro/massage
5. Get mammo & skin check
6. New recipes: including some dips for Year of Dip
7. Spring Equinox
8. Get a pedicure. I am in desperate, desperate need.
9. Buy sinks and faucets for smaller bathrooms at the shore and tile for one of the bath floors
10. Schedule shore house opening, couch delivery, and plumbing work
11. Dining room update in Philly: paint walls, chairs, china and corner cabinets; reupholster chair seats; purchase new mirror and two end chairs, purge both cabinets, get rid of old table and mirror
12. Small celebrations all month

I used to do monthly goals, then I went to quarterly goals, then back to loose monthly goals, then no goals except a few big mamas, now just a tracker for monthly to dos/should be dones. January's. February's.

What's on your agenda for the month?

Hope everyone in Super Tuesday states is out there voting today! Remember, you're not a pundit. You're a voter. Don't worry about electability. Vote for who you want to be President.

Friday Five: August and everything after

Except that I'm just going to talk about the remaining days of August and nothing after, okay? I wanted to use an intact name of a Counting Crows album in the title. Sue me. I thought it would jazz up this quick five jobby to do list for the next three weeks.

1. Get my hands on a copy of Cocoa Beach, the newest by Beatriz Williams.

2. Eat at Hula Grill and Del's and try Aunt Betty's (new to me ice cream place).

3. Pull photos for my sunrise coffee table book.

4. Bike over the bridge from Ocean City to Somers Point.

5. Girls lake weekend - this is cheating because it's happening now but it's my list and I do what I want.

Not summer related but shit that still has to get done this month:
- Measure dressers and TV stand at the shore so I can begin hunting for replacements in thrift shops.
- Get rid of the loveseat in the basement.
- Research stand alone water cooler (anyone have recommendations?)

Happy happy birthday to my stepmom Carol today! Love you!
Have a great weekend, Bs.

40 before 40

Happy Friday friends! On Sunday I turn 38. If you’ve read this blog for more than a minute, you know I love to make lists and set goals. Some are monthly, some are seasonal, and some reside on what I call my life list.

I never regret one day of getting older because too many people are denied the privilege. But I do look around and reflect during my birthday month. What experiences do I want to have next? Where do I want to go? What skills can I pick up? Big or small, it gives me something to look forward to.

Some things that I’ve crossed off my life list so far:
Get Lasik if I qualify, shoot a gun, buy a play pack for a season, take graphic design courses, get married in a way that fits us, work on a political campaign, swim with dolphins, see the sun rise over the ocean at the shore in all four seasons, try foie gras, host Thanksgiving/Christmas/Easter, do the Polar Bear Plunge, visit Bushkill Falls, spend the day at Walden Pond, drive across the Golden Gate Bridge, ride a street car, drink a Guinness in Ireland, take two weeks off in a row and spend them at the beach, make homemade pasta, touch a redwood tree, stand in Lake Michigan, perfect the turkey, see the sun rise on the east coast and set on the west coast of the US in the same day, take the elevator to the top of City Hall in Philadelphia, buy a house, tour Pennsylvania covered bridges.

If I had a fat bank account and unlimited days off, this list would basically be travel-related only. But I have neither, so I had to supplement with real life things. I'm also sharing this early because some are large travel goals that require time, planning, and cash money.

My list of 40 things I'd like to do by my 40th birthday on March 15, 2017:

Enjoy your weekend and go ahead, have some cake for my birthday Sunday because
