Thursday Thoughts - and suddenly it was mid-October

1. Yesterday I woke up, turned to look out the window, and from my pillow saw a sky bubbling with pink and shot through with yellow. It was glorious. I opened the screen and leaned out the window to get a photo, almost fell out, and got cockblocked by trees anyway. Hashtag sky party problems.

2. Have you guys seen the Removed series where the photographer removes phones from the hands of people in photos? I am never 100% phone free but I try to be conscious and engaging and looking up instead of zoning out when I'm with people. Even when I'm not. I don't want to be a borg.

3. Pumpkin has vomited all over Trader Joe's.
4. Philly love: I adore the murals in this town. This is on the firehouse wall on 21st or 22nd and Market.

5. I love when I see something in a book that describes something I know so perfectly. I've always found inspiration in observing others.

6. I made some pretty good chicken Monday night. I got out a little pot, squeezed about 1/2 cup of dijon mustard and 1/2 cup honey in there, added about 1 tsp of rosemary, a shake of garlic powder, a teaspoon of kosher salt, 1/4 teaspoon of white pepper, and three tablespoons of butter, and whisked it over medium heat until it was combined. I tossed 3 lb of boneless, skinless chicken thighs in it, and then baked them in a 325 pre-heated oven for 40 minutes. Sometimes the good meals come on the fly.

7. For many years I've used Not Your Mother's Dry Shampoo. Unfortunately I tried Living Proof's Dry Shampoo sample and that will have to come to an end. I say unfortunately because I typically get NYM's on sale so they average out to about $4 each and the Living Proof is $22. The Living Proof gets me at least one additional day without washing my hair, but typically two. Two additional days. Worth the $$.

8. I'm always exhausted the week Show Us Your Books goes live. I get little kid at Christmas excited over it all. Did you read the recommendations of 41 bloggers who linked up Tuesday? Have you entered the giveaway? One prize is a $50 Amazon giftcard and one prize is bookwormboutique swag (pink mug and 8x8 print seen in this photo). You can enter below.
9. I'm watching Criminal Minds for the tenth year in a row. Welcome Aisha Tyler.

10. E-card of the week...This week has required levels of patience that I simply do not have.

  1. I love that you used the term cockblock. I do too, in traffic mostly, but not everyone gets it. Nice plating on the chicken, by the way. The flavors sound great and look lovely on a bed of wilted spinach. Love roasted sweets too. Have a great day.

  2. Philly definitely has some great murals, and arty architecture to gaze at. No cockblocking required :)
I forgot about the book link up (and I wasn't home to prepare a post) so I'll try and get my act together for the next one!

  3. That chicken looks great! One of my favorite restaurants here makes a chicken in a lemon and white wine sauce over spinach with crushed tomatoes that reminds me of your dish--delish!

  4. LOL that last meme is so true...I still have some posts to check out from Show Us Your Books but found a lot of great recommendations, as usual!! Gorgeous tree photo!!

  5. I love people watching so much entertainment and inspiration. My Goodreads recommendations went from normally 20-30 up to 246 mostly from the linkup. I love it! The chicken looks good, I love just throwing things together and it works.

  6. The sky looks so much better than my actual phone photos. #5 - I would like to add that you can always "Gamma" people in line or around you- striking up a conversation with them providing more material for your creative writing!
Love the ecard! May we all easily and happily and successfully accomplish all that we desire today!
    Love, Your Momma

  7. The best book (because I don't think I did this yesterday): The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, even though I've read it before and it's a kid's book.

Our TJ's is like an hour from my house, but I told myself it wasn't fall until I took a trip there and I was not disappointed.

  8. I love Aisha Tyler. I cannot watch Criminal Minds if I want to leave my house again.

  9. Philly has some awesome street art! My sister lives close to the sculpture garden and it is just so amazingly creative. The chicken looks really good, but I'm making mental notes of your sides. "Chicken on spinach, yesss... And sweet potatoes on the side. It's genius!"

  10. The visual of number 1? YES. lol... All that was missing was some dirty looks by some sassy pugs who were displeased that you interrupted their sleep! That dinner looks AMAZING. I'll take all of it. Congrats on an AWESOME link up!!

  11. I used to watch criminal minds regularly, but it got pretty dark and my viewing lapsed. I do miss it. And I was at TJ's Tuesday - love that store!

  12. The chicken looks delicious! I never saw the Removed series but now that I scrolled through it I realize I need to detach myself from my phone. It's embarrassing but I've been glued to my phone a lot more lately. I admit that sometimes I do it when I'm out to NOT talk to people (like if I'm waiting on a line or at a playground). Okay that is really bad. I wish I could use ANY kind of dry shampoo but I always look like a big grease ball if I don't wash my hair.

  13. Murals are my favorite. I can walk down the same street in the city week after week and see new artwork on a building. I love it.

  14. I love good street art. Please instagram it all, or post it here, or whatever you do, as long as you share it.

I try to make no phone times at home, especially if we are eating a meal together or if we're watching one of "our" shows. We need to not be those people. Also, I irrationally worry about my neck muscles after a lifetime of bending it to look at my phone.

And you're right about the TJ's pumpkin vomit but the pumpkin butter and the bread/muffin mix are amazing and I stock up on them every year!

  15. Best book I read last month... Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson (The Bloggess!)

  16. your pictuer still turned out good- i can totally see what you're saying. Can't wait to check out that removed series.

  17. Show Us Your Books leaves me drained but in a good way. I so glad we do it.

I've seen parts of that series. It's sad and disturbing. I'm working on being more phone free. I have some places, like my bedroom and at the dinner table, that I try to keep the phone out of and also while I'm with people I care about. I saw a quote once that said "I like to be around people who make me forget about my phone." I love that.

  18. As much as I love Trader Joe's, the amount of pumpkin everything is overkill this time of year. And I've been loving the pics of what we look like with the phones removed from the pictures. I try to always keep my phone put away while dining out (unless I'm taking a quick pic of course) and when I go to bed.

  19. That chicken does look amazing. You're right about meals on the fly, although it's slightly annoying when they turn out better than dishes you took ages over and carefully followed a recipe for!

I'm still working through Show Us Your Books posts, there are so many and they all have such good books in! Thanks again for hosting.

You have so much pumpkin stuff! Here we have like, two big pallets of mangy looking pumpkins in each supermarket and that's it. None of your fancy pumpkin vomit. Not sure if I'm sad or glad about it!

  20. YAY for a new recipe to try.
The Removed series brought me great joy. Sometimes I have to be very intentional about ignoring my phone.
Thanks for the reminder to read more book reviews!!! I like to wait until a day or so after the linkup so that way most people have posted and I can go through them all at once. #OCDwoes.

  21. Favorite Book - The Royal We

... I saw that "removed"... so eye opening. I look around & see people all the time & see how their faces are down in their faces.... its an odd world really.

  22. Hooray for more criminal minds! The Removed series is really cool. I'm very glad I don't fall into that trap. I've actually been told that I'm terrible at checking my phone, answering my phone, responding to texts... whatever! People know that if they need me, they need to contact whoever I'm out with. I'm not a phone person. (I think it's because I've lost so many of them that now I just leave it at home or in my purse and never touch it.)

  23. Best book in the last month, tough, I have read a few good ones! I am reading Elaine Gottschalks book Stopping the Vicious Cycle and it is definitely the BEST one, informative and eye opening.

  24. I don't have the brain capacity to remember what books I read this past month at the moment haha. I know I read the Betty & Veronica Jumbo I got on the plane ride to Florida! I feel like that should count : ) The past couple of years I've tried to be really conscious of how much I'm using the phone when I'm with other people. I want to be present!

  25. My work computer just cock blocked me from seeing the removed series... and I am guilty so I need to see that!

  26. Big fan of murals and that one is gorgeous!! And I feel like pumpkin has vomited all over every single store haha - Svetlana @Life With a Side of Wine

  27. I try to be good about not having my phone out constantly when I'm in a social setting. It's okay to take a few photos and even IG one perhaps, but I don't need to check it for emails or texts or be on social media all the time. Your dinner sounds tasty- I love when I can come up with something on the fly that ends up being a winner.

  28. The sky cockblock made me laugh out loud at my desk. That mural is amazing! The whole pumpkin vomit is one of my least favorite things about fall...with the exception of actual pumpkins I don't like anything pumpkin.

  29. Pumpkin is ERRYWHERE right now. Literally. How many more days until Christmas?
Shit. That's a steep price tag for dry shampoo - but an extra day of not having to wash your hair?? Priceless.

    ReplyDelete
  30. lol I also went to TJ's this week and noticed everything was in pumpkin flavor. I got similar photos and bought some of the mini pumpkins to decorate the house.

  31. That chicken looks amazing - I'm not real good at working with ingredients but that sounds easy enough for me! I'm going to have to try it. Even the sweet potatoes (?) caught my eye. And I'm all pumpkin-spice(d) out.

  32. My Trader Joe's opened on Tuesday!!!!!!!!! I am so excited!! I just have to wait until the newness dies down before I head over. It is one of the biggest things I miss about Atlanta. I love those murals. So cool. We have a few spots around here that I want to capture on foot one day. Ohhh your chicken sounds yummy! Sometimes making stuff up is the best. Just feel it out. I remember when Aisha Tyler was the host of 5th Wheel. All the laughs!!!

  33. The Removed series makes me really sad. I'm definitely not as obsessed with my phone as many people are, but I realized how much I rely on just knowing I have it with me when I forgot to toss it in my purse on the way out to work one morning last week. I seriously freaked out when I realized I'd forgotten it at home, and came straight home after work (even though I had a couple of errands to run) because I was terrified that something awful would happen (like an accident or flat tire) and I'd have no way to reach anyone. I know that's incredibly dramatic and ridiculous, but my mind always shoots to the worst possible scenario.

I'm going to have to try something similar to that chicken! I love Dijon mustard, and we already have the majority of those ingredients on hand.

I need to go to Trader Joe's soon. We don't go often because we always end up leaving with a minimum of $50-$100 worth of shit we don't even need, but I do love pumpkin stuff. I don't even care if that makes me trendy or basic or whatever. I've loved pumpkin stuff since high school when I was introduced to the pumpkin roll (if you haven't had one, it's basically a pumpkin cake rolled around a cream cheese filling and it's amazing), and I will still love it when the craze inevitably fades away. (It will obviously be more difficult to find pumpkin stuff then, though, so I may as well enjoy the fact that pumpkins are everywhere right now!)

I'm still trying to catch up on my blog reading and commenting, and that includes the link-up. I've already added a shit ton of books to my "To Read" list, so I'd say it was yet another successful month! :-)

  34. book day is legit my favourite day. i get so excited to read all the recommendations. I'm not kidding, KC said me yesterday 'I noticed that the second week of every month, you buy a bunch of books. What's up with that?' lol I was like... er. haha. Anyway. thanks for starting the link up, it's my fave!
that chicken looks so good! and that removed series.. woah. I am pretty bad on my phone in public when i'm on my own or whatever, but i am very good when i'm with people.. only because it hurts my feelings when i'm at dinner or whatever and my friends are on their phones. KC also hates it, so the majority of time we spend together is phone-less.

  35. When I get my shit together I will join book day every month. So far Ive missed so many of them. Ill get it together since I obvi adore book day. PS... how just how is October almost over!

  36. I will risk my life for a good sky shot if I have to, I need help.

I read something in a book lately and thought yes that, how did this author know!?

  37. LOL @ Cockblocked by trees. I hate when nature messes up my awesome nature photograph!
I'm still only like 1/4 through reading all the Show Us Your Books links! It should be declared a monthly national holiday so that we all have time for that.

  38. I was using NYM dry shampoo but then tried Bastiste and loved it. I can get two days out of Basitste too

  39. you know you have your priorities straight when you abandon your vacation peeps when you find out there is a computer area with free internet access. I high-tailed it out of the room like the building was on fire LOL.

I've been seeing CHRISTMAS stuff already and I get so angry because hello, we haven't even hit Halloween yet. stores need to slow their roll!
