Choose Your Own Adventure - April Results & May Goals

Life According to Steph
April's Choose Your Own Adventure challenge had the monthly theme of FINANCES. My goals were:

1) Make extra payments on my car so it's paid off in May. Paid an extra payment and a half. Two more payments and this shit is history.
2) Freezer and pantry clean out - use what I have without buying new aside from produce and dairy to save on household expenses. I was pretty successful with this. I bought no meats or canned goods aside from organic canned pumpkin for the dogs and two boxes of pasta I needed for recipes.
3) Don't use change - save it instead. I was about half and half on this.

May's theme is READ.

My READ Theme Goals:
1) Get current on magazines. I'm about a month and a half behind.
2) Read an Agatha Christie Miss Marple novel.
3) Read five books total including the above. This is typical for me but hard for me to do when I'm also keeping up with magazines.

The link up to report in on how you did with May - Read will be Thursday, June 4. Mark your calendars! After May we'll be taking a break and for me and Steph the break will be permanent (Ashley may keep it going or anyone else interested can jump on with her), so let's make this one count.

  2. Gahhh, so jealous your car is almost paid off! I didn't have a car payment for a few years, and now I have one again...wah! That is awesome you only had to buy a few things for groceries - that should be a May goal for me!

  3. Yes, get current on your magazines!!! LOL! Owning your car outright is awesome. Sophia has been paid off since 2008! I am using my freezer and pantry stuff, too. Since I had been over-buying, I found stuff I did not know I had!!!
    Have an excellent Thursday!

  4. Good job, especially with the car payments!!!! I cannot wait until ours are paid off. Actually, I can't wait for J to start kindergarten because that's $1000 saved per month on childcare! Hello, house fund!

  6. YAY for being close to paying off your car. We have no car payments... and it makes me the happiest girl in the world. Now, if I could just get the mortgage paid in the same way.... but we're paying cash for our reno, so I guess that is a good (better) investment for right now?

  7. Yay for almost being paid off!! It's an awesome feeling! We just lump paid off our cars last year, they were so low it was like omg why are we still making payments?!

  8. Is such an awesome feeling when that final car payment is made! Congrats to you for almost being there! Francis was a tough month but I think we're working through it. I'm really excited about the reading this month however I love your goals! I'm not much of a magazine reader but I have a few that come to me that I mostly use for collage and scrapbook items!

  9. Congrats on the car! LOL, of course I bought a new car when I only had one payment left on my original acura, but that's neither here nor there. I love doing a good freezer/pantry clean out, makes me feel less wasteful. Also, on a side note, I made an incredible pork roast last night. I'm still patting myself on the back, that poor piggy was so juicy and tender. I can never remember, are you a crock pot user?

  13. eeee congrats on the car payments being almost done! This month will feel fabulous.
I feel like I'm doing pretty good with the pantry thing, since I know I'll be leaving in August I'm not really stocking anything. I should do a once over though, figure out how to start using up stuff.
You're going to rock May, I'm sure. I'm not... haha I love that you have 5 books, I have 1. Whomp.

  16. We often pay double on our truck, because we were used to no car payments for five years and now we have two.
    I haven't read a magazine in yearsssss....is that weird?

  17. That will feel great when you pay off your car! I don't think I'll ever know what that feels like but anyways it was great you were about to pay extra to speed up the process.

  18. Sounds like you did awesome on your money goals!!!! Having a car paid off is the best feeling ever. I feel like I will never be there again...lol! I am about 2 and half months behind on magazines. How do I let that happen?!

  19. Thanks to our week away from home we did an inadvertent pantry challenge. It was an experience, to say the least.

We save our change. It's fun to cash it in when the jar gets full and decide what to do with it. I am opting out of the reading challenge. I can't think of any reading goals I have right now.

  20. Great job on the goals! I can't wait to have my car paid off...of course that's about 2 years away but it always feels so great. Good luck on your May goals!

  21. I, like everyone else, think it's awesome that your car will be paid off this month! I remember the days of no car payments ...

I know I'll get mine paid off a little early, but I still have plenty of payments to make before that day comes.

I really need to read at least 5 books this month in order to get caught up with my reading goals for the year, but that probably won't happen. I'm still optimistic that I can finish 50 books this year, but I don't think May will be the month that I suddenly catch up. I wish I averaged 5 books a month, but, as much as I love reading, I just can't seem to get through that many on a regular basis.

  22. How much change did you manage to save up? I've tried that before, too... I do okay except for I always end up using my quarters.

  23. I think I'm even father behind in magazines than you are. I need to make that a priority this week! We save all of our change then roll it and stick it in the boys' bank accounts. It's money we don't even miss and gives them each an extra $100 a year. Except now Nolan's school is doing a change drive and he wants to take it all to class. Ha!
