School of Life: My dog can tell time

It took me years to notice, but now that I have it's glaringly obvious. Gus can tell time. He can also differentiate between a week day a weekend day.

Weekdays, he prefers to sleep in. I frequently leave for work with him lazing around like Jabba the Hut.

Weekends, he doesn't want to miss one second of me being home all day. He takes his position as President of the Ahole Wakeup Committee very seriously. He begins his whining wakeup ritual around 5:30 a.m. and endures a lot of shushing and yelling until he finally succeeds, anywhere between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m.

He knows that he eats when I get home between 6 - 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. On Saturdays he prefers to eat at 5 p.m., and every week at 4 p.m. he starts his Let's Eat Dance.

Sundays he likes to dine quite early, so he begins jackassing around for food beginning at 2 p.m. and finally drives me to the brink of insanity between 3-4 p.m.

Geege and Mae know Gus is in charge of wake ups and dining. Geege is the reluctant Vice President of the Ahole Wakeup Committee. He needs to be roused to get up himself. Mae says F U to the Ahole Wakeup Committee and hates them for interfering with her diva sleep. She growls, but she acquiesces because she knows he's the king.

So there you have it. I have a dog who can tell time.

  1. Grace doesn't even roll over until I'm up and about, even if it's noon. If, on the other hand, I have a very early commitment, she doesn't even raise her head when I get up... she stays in bed until I return home. No food, no bathroom, just sleep. She's the perfect dog. Until entertainment time, used solely to acquire what she wants.

  2. This is hilarious! Ha, ha King Gus :) Sam does this too...on work mornings he is dead to the world but on the weekend he is up around 5:30-6:00 pacing around the bed as loud as possible or if you are close enough to the edge licking you! I have no idea what the deal with that is! I swear he somehow is able to walk louder in the mornings!

  5. I have a Gus in my house too, her name is Poochie. The only difference is that she wants us up and feeding her 7 days a week by 6am. Shut the bedroom door on her and she puts her paw underneath it so that she can slam it back and forth. Beeps is our VP, she proceeds to pounce on our bodies and run around the room crashing into things, but only after Poochie has worked for a good hour.

So funny about the early evening feelings on Sat/Sun. That happens here too. Our girls have dry food available all day but I swear you'd think we were starving them.

I just love your little crew. They have so much personality :). Our lives would be so boring without our four legged friends. Thanks again for linking up. Xo

  8. Hilarious! Hawkeye is on free feed but I think she knows what time I get home from work. She's usually waiting by the gate. But Friday I came home 3 hours early and she was still in bed, I totally surprised her!

  11. OMG Roger is the same way; he knows my days off and when I'm supposed to be home every single day.

  12. Seamus gets me up at the same time regardless of the day! It's horrible. It starts with ear licking, face licking the walking to the other side and starting again. Damn them for being so cute, we give in.

  13. I could kill Maxwell. 5:30 a.m. up on the bed he bounces (he tries sporadically to wake me up at 4:30 a.m.) up whining. His cohorts join him around 5:50 because they really want to eat. Maxwell couldn't care less if I freak out he will jump off the bed only to return 2 minutes later with a look on his face that says "now are you ready now?" hideous.

  14. Jethro is pretty good at knowing when it's time to eat as well. When morning comes he begins by climbing on top of dressers and knocking shit down, or bringing in one of his toys and bopping it around as loudly as he can until one of us gives in. Then he weaves in and out between our feet until we get downstairs and proudly sits in front of his bowl knowing he has won.

  15. My pets are the same way. Sometimes on Friday nights I feed them dinner later hoping they won't start begging so early in the morning and I can sleep in, but noo, they still start freaking out no matter what.

  16. Hahaha! President of the Ahole Wakeup Committee. My dog drives me insane because her clock obviously does not observe Daylight Savings as she is ALWAYS up my ass when it's not even dinner time yet. "Bitch you got 30 more minute; go lie your ass down!" She never listens....buuuuut at least she sleeps in. Everyday.

  17. I'm with Mae, I wouldn't want to join in the Ahole wake up comity either but if you're not top dog you have no choice. Sucks not to be the top dog sometimes.

  18. This is hilarious! Ahole Wake Up Committee job responsibilities are serious!

Gracie and Mac can tell time on the weekends. If we sleep in later than 6:30-7:00am...they let us know that it is time to wake the fuck up because Gracie will start her beagle cries and Mac attempts to howl and it sounds pathetic and even he knows that because he in fact cant howl, so then he starts angry barking at his constant failed attempts at howling.

Now that we have added Olivia to the mix....she meows every damn time she gets put in her room. Feeding time is all the time, I think she is a piglet in kitten clothes.

  19. My Lucy is the same way. Creepy. Funny sometimes, but super annoying. My dogs hate summer, since we are usually busy at 6PM when they feel the need to eat! I'm with Mae on this one! Leave me alone!
