Thursday Thoughts

1. I've started incorporating my new essential oils into daily living. I have a few more on order and will report back after I've gotten into the swing of things. Typical of me, I've been reading up on them like a boss. Giddy up.

2. I know you guys like book talk. I've been showing what I'm currently reading in pics here on the blog and on Instagram or Facebook. I included my recent book rec in January Recommendations and I plan on doing that at the end of every month. I'm just not really a book reviewing type enough to dedicate a whole post to one book, but I love to talk books and tell you what I'm reading and hear what you're reading. Speaking of...

The Philadelphia Free Library system is forsaking me. I'm without a book to read. Currently requested and waiting on these babies to come to me:
If something doesn't arrive by Monday, I need to order books for Mexico. It's been an eternity since I bought books. What are you reading?
3. I think it's bizarre that US Mag has made a huge deal of the Virgin Bachelor. They were on the cover for both the wedding and honeymoon. The wedding story was basically yeah they're going to be doing it now! The honeymoon story was basically yeah they did it and it was good! So weird of you to discuss your sex life with US Magazine, Bachelor and wife. Am I the only one who thinks married people who frequently or publicly talk about their sex life are probably exaggerating it? File under: things that should be private.

4. My current favorite way to do sweet potatoes: Scrub potatoes and cut into little wedges. Spray a 9x13 with nonstick spray and preheat oven to 400. Toss potatoes with EVOO until coated, then sprinkle with kosher salt and thyme. Add a bit of honey and stir well. Bake for 45 minutes.

5. Thursday Daydreaming of my ideal treat yo'self day:  Wake up in a clean house and enjoy unlimited coffee without jitters or resultant sleepless night. Meals: poached eggs for breakfast, mexican for lunch, steak for dinner. Activities: funded shopping at Target, Marshalls and TJ Maxx; pedicure; take dogs to run freeeeeeee in the fields with MFD. Spend the night relaxing with an awesome, engrossing novel. The End. See Voyage of the Mee Mee for more Treat Yo Self ideas in the post and in the comments. What's your ideal treat yo'self day?

6. The Americans: coming back on Wednesday, which means I have to stay up and watch it since I'm heading out of town Thursday. I would totally hang out with both Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell (you will always be Felicity to me, Keri. ALWAYS) as people and Philip and Elizabeth Jennings as characters even though they are fraught with tension.
7. As a Bieber hater and general snarky person, I'd be remiss if I didn't send a letter to Bieber's Dad during this trying time.
Dear Jeremy Bieber:
Maybe be more of a dad and less of a bro rolling in your kid's posse. Also maybe reconsider your poses and wardrobe and general persona. You're going to be 39 years old this year.
Sincerely, SMD

8. I'm certainly not a fashionista, but can this stop? Foreheads don't need decor.

9. According to my Today in History app, on this day in 1998 Tara Lipinski became the youngest gold- medalist at the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. Which is a good segue into me saying I wish Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir were narrating life in general on a more consistent basis. I mean they fucking coordinate outfits. They have flair.

10. Ecard of the week, repinned from cousin Colleen:

  1. This week, a student told his teacher that the amount of shits he gave was nonexistent. Reminds me of your ecard. :)

The Leftovers is on my to-read list too. Sigh- someday. Get you some books, friend! Do you have an e-reader or do you read paper?

  2. justin bieber's dad is as much of a tool as his son. when i found out what he was doing/how he was dressing and he's my age, i laughed so hard. talk about loser.

as for books, i think i finally found one i can stick to: the invisible man. saw that on the top 100 list on amazon and apparently, it's a great book that everyone should read.

  3. Why is it ALWAYS the parents who are the problems with these young celebretards??? Yeah I get it, they see their kids as cash cows and have to be cool in order to stay on the payroll... but WHY!?!?! Buck up and be a fucking parents before your ass kid gets deported.
I was at our local library Monday night and thought of you. I hadn't been in one in so long, I forgot how much I love them. And that quirky little Dewey Decimal System! Although, I have nothing to recommend to you. Fail.
Your pamper day sounds perfect. Can't wait to see you in a few short hours <3

  4. Book - The Rosie Project! I just finished it and it's really cute. It's a quick read though, so you'll need another book too. I want to hear more about the essential oils!

  5. Justin Bieber's dad...that explains a lot! My perfect day sounds almost exactly like yours, except add Maurices to the shopping list.

  6. BAHAHAHAHAA. #7 & #8 I love!

Also, there is such a thing as a "Today in History" app? I need this! Is that what it's called?

  7. OMG GIVASHITOMETER!!! I need one of those :) The headband over the forehead I just don't even get. I know people are supposedly going for the "bohemian" or whatever look--but in my book you just look stupid. Stupid is the look you're going for. I just started The Silent Wife (one perk of living in a very small town that's mostly college students is that our library is usually pretty well stocked)--not too far in yet but I've heard it's really good. Eleanor and Park--just be prepared! That book is still hanging around in my thoughts. It was SO good! I was giving the side eye to the whole sex thing during the bachelor wedding. We get it. You're getting married. You're going to have sex. Lots of sex. Good for you. Now shut up about it! haha! And if Catherine said GROWN SEXY one more time I was going to throw my wine glass at the TV.

  8. Wait, I'm older than Justin Beiber's dad??? There is something wrong with that, lol!

  9. Love this! To anyone liking non-fiction The Death Course is amazing! Norma Bowe is living the Ghandi "be the change"
She teaches at Kean University. Love the sweet potato recipe, I have been doing the same, sans the honey and using
white potatoes, too, since I had them. Curious about the Americans. Love the Tara/Johnny picture. I have not heard their commentaries, but love the coordinating outfits. Love the treat yo self idea, too!!
    Have a beautiful day!
    Love your MOMMA

  10. The whole virgin Bachelor thing....they talked about that WAYY too much! I'm ashamed to admit i watched the wedding- and they kept showing a view of the "honeymoon suite cam" which was just the bed. But it made me feel so uncomfortable.

Also- Justin Bieber's dad. WHY? and 8-10- truth.

  11. Treat Yoself for me is a good cocktail, a cupcake, a good walk with the pups and chinese food - so pretty much, I treat myself once a week. Someday I'll get a little adventurous. Also, J Beebs dad is a creep and forehead bands make me want to snap them against someone's face... because I'm also a creep. Happy Thursday.

  12. I am reading Lakeside cottage, I dislike being without a book. Feels weird. Talking about your virginity or lack thereof is just bad form, it's no ones business. Bieber is a tool and now his Dad is too. Love that ecard!

    ReplyDelete
  13. I wish Tara and Johnny would follow me around and narrate my everyday events. It'd be magical!

    ReplyDelete
  14. I'm really into sweet potatoes lately. im going to try your method- do you put the honey on top? never thought of adding thyme.
bieber and his dad, good riddance. that card is me all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  15. That ecard is perfect!!!

I cant wait to hear about your essential oil findings. There is just so much information on them out there that it is a lot of work to figure out which ones to get for what and if they really work! It gets overwhelming.

I am always looking for new ways to make sweet potatoes...this sounds delicious! I just made some bbq chicken in the crockpot the other day and shredded it and put it over baked sweet potatoes. It was sooo good and easy!

I don't understand forehead décor either. I think it looks dumb.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Not only do Tara and Johnny coordinate their outfits (wait till you see what they're wearing today!) but I enjoy them so much more than Scott Hamilton and the other chick in primetime.

    Mmmmmm....sweet potatoes....

Here's something funny: last night I was looking at a bookshelf and noticed "By the Time You Read This" and realized I haven't read it yet. I might take it on vacation.

So excited for Kevin Walker and Felicity -- I mean Matthew and Keri -- to be back on my TV screen next week!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'm anxious to hear the essential oil info!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Literally made a face when I got the pic of Beibs with his Dad. Suddenly, his douchiness makes a lot more sense.
Have you read about frankincense? It's expensive but it's a MIRACLE for so many things. One of my coworkers is real into oils... we sniff that shit when we're stressed and it really calms you down!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I've been thinking of jumping on the essential oil bandwagon, but haven't done it yet - I'm curious to hear what you think of them. I buy too many books :( I need to get back to the library!! I just bought a bag of sweet potatoes, and was seriously on the web looking for new ways to eat them. I will try tonight. And I saw a preview for "The Americans" last night and thought - "Oh, it's Felicity!!"

  20. your treat yo self day sounds like perfection to me! and ditto to Jeremy Bieber. So gross. oh as for books, i'm currently reading the white queen. I loved the miniseries (I think it was on starz) and the book is pretty similar. before that I read the divergent series which I generally liked but wasn't in love with. order some books on amazon - so cheap!

  21. i have a friend that wears one of those headbands...i want to slap her everytime she does it!

  22. The whole 'virgin' thing of The Bachelor bugged me because he's publicly talked about how he's NOT a virgin... but he and Catherine decided to take that path. He just recently released an 'I Am Second' video, it's very interesting... http://shullfamily.blogspot.com/2014/02/sean-is-second.html

  23. Your treat yourself day sounds fab-u-lous. Count me in. Can i get a babysitter please? I am in desperate need of a good book too.. i was just saying how i need to lock myself in a library (but that'd be crazy)
please please please report back on how the essential oils are working out for you/ how you use them etc.

  24. Headband around the top of the head and the hair all poufy makes it look like you have a penis tip on your head. People think looking like a dickhead is cool. Fashion needs a facepalm for that one.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I love the "treat yo self" Parks and Rec reference. and I fucking hate Bieber so much, he's annoying and a little punk ass.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Bieber has to go...so friggin sick of him and his nonsense. His dad is also a moron...and in a way I feel weird that the dad is only like 2 years older than me? Makes me feel way too old. Talking about the virginity thing...that got on my nerves too. No one cares, and it's probably all a lie anyway. Who seriously waits that long anymore. And what's this history app you talked about? Is it called Today in history? Sounds interesting. Loved reading your blog as always ;)

    ReplyDelete
  27. I second the emotion for the halt of forehead decor. AS for the virgin marriage. Well of course the sex was good. It was both you "first times" you have nothing to compare it too. Plus...what are you going to say. Not what I though, but I guess I'll learn to live with it!! Beaver's dad is only in it for the money. I don't think he honestly cares about his son, just his cut of the fame.

    ReplyDelete
  28. The essential oils are interesting, did you do a separate post on those? I'd also love to know what you're using and how!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I have a few essential oils, but I don't do much with them. I'm excited to hear what you come up with. I'm so with you on the forehead bands.I watched three episodes of The Americans and quit. The commercials for the new season look good. I may have to give it another shot.

    ReplyDelete
  30. The forehead decor needs to go away.
I'm currently listening to The Maze Runner. It's…interesting. I ended up with it because the library was out of Game of Thrones on CD. I'm going to pass this one onto Scott when I'm finished with it. It's right up his alley.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Bieber and his dad need to just go away...GROSS!!! And I am over the Bachelor....every single last bit of it...it's just weird...I haven't watched since....hmmmm, 8 years?

    ReplyDelete
  32. I did NOT read that ecard right the first time...*smh* It was hilarious once I got it though! I will need to add honey and thyme to our potatoes the next time we do it that way because it sounds amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Total ewwww on the overexposure of the bachelor virgins sex life. I feel that Tara Lipinski is so negative in her commentary. Remember I have offered you a weekend of hotel living in your home.

    ReplyDelete
  34. From your pic, it appears that Tara and Johnny coordinate makeup as well as outfits.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Haha I'm the opposite. I think people don't talk about sex ENOUGH. Not in an R-rated way, but in a healthy way. In my opinion, there are three things that people don't talk enough about: sex, love, and bowel movements, but yes, there is a time and a place for each one. I guess that's why I blog, I can make my own time and a place if I so choose ;)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Tara and Johnny got a red carpet gig, right? I think? I only half listen to things like that. But they are incredible.

Also, I am DEFINITELY trying that sweet potato recipe!
