Friday Five: Drugstore Beauty Finds

TGIF MOFOS! Special Friday treat post from my friend Jana from college.

Jana Lynch is a blogger at Jana Says and founder of BloggersHelping Bloggers, an online blogger mentoring program (Steph is one of our the instructors in our new beginner blogger class).  When you’re done reading, she’d love it if you’d stop by and say hi on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram.

As much as I would prefer not to be, I am a lady on a budget.  When shopping, I need to make sure that I am spending my dollars wisely and efficiently on everything from clothes to food to shoes (let’s be honest on that one—flip flops) to makeup.

Fortunately, my longstanding affair with drugstores helps with that last one.

My love of drugstores dates back to at least 1994, when I got my driver’s license, and I could get in my stylish Honda Accord to drive to the closest one and browse their long, well-stocked shelves for as long as I wanted (mainly in an attempt to avoid either homework, my parents, or my sisters. Most likely all 3). I would bring small amounts of money because there was no possible way I could leave without buying something. I didn’t want to blow all my hard earned babysitting money on nail polish and makeup, (certainly not when there were CDs and books to buy, too) but I had to buy something.

Of course I did. Otherwise, the trip would have just felt like a waste. Or at the very least, it gave me a good reason why I avoided responsibility for 2 hours. (But Mom, I really needed that 80th bottle of nail polish!)

I still do that from time to time.

Please don’t tell my husband and daughter.

Anyway.

As you can imagine, I’ve bought A LOT of products over the years. Some were crap, many were adequate and, as I’ve learned, there are a few products that are just as good as the expensive brands I would buy if I were swimming in money (Urban Decay and MAC, I’m looking at you). Here’s my favorite 5:

1. Essie nail polish. For as long as I could remember, I could only use it or buy it from the salon when I would get manicures. When I could get my little hands on all my favorite colors of the best nail polish I have ever used at any time I wanted, I did a jig of glee. While I do enjoy a bottle of OPI now and again, I always come back to Essie. A little pricier than your typical drugstore brand, it’s worth it when I think of how much money it saves in manicures and ho

      2. Cover Girl mascara. Given the fact that mascara needs to be replaced fairly often, I have a hard time shelling out $15-$20 for a bottle. But I did just that until one day, I decided to give the Cover Girl brand a try. What a great decision! It’s half the price and works just as well, if not better (I’ve had less smudging and running) than the expensive brands I’ve used. And I don’t feel as guilty when, after a mere 3-4 months of use, I have to toss it.

      3. Maybelline Baby Lips. I am a lip balm aficionado. I have more lip balm than any human being could possibly need and, at any given time, at least 4 different types are in my purse. However. When I reach for one, I almost always reach for Baby Lips. I love how easily it goes on, how long it lasts, the number of choices (peppermint is my favorite; peach is my least favorite), the fact that it has SPF, and it doesn’t have that sticky quality that so many lip balms have.

      4. Olay face moisturizer. I admit it. I have tried the pricy moisturizers, washes, and astringents that you can buy at the fancy mall makeup counters. They did a decent enough job but the price tag is really too hard to manage. So I took to the drugstore and experimented.  And the one that I decided was the best was Olay all day moisturizer with SPF for sensitive skin. A little goes a long way and I have not had one adverse effect from using it. The SPF is an essential component for me as well.

     5. Neutrogena eye makeup remover. This is, hands down, the best eye makeup remover I have ever used. It’s not greasy at all and takes off everything, even when you use the Urban Decay makeup setting spray that makes it so your makeup never wants to come off your face (side note: if you have a problem with your makeup running or coming off throughout the day, get the Urban Decay setting spray. Amazing).  It only comes in liquid form, so if you’re into makeup remover pads instead, this might not be for you although I do highly recommend that you give it a try.
I have just realized that 5 of the 7 items I use daily are on this list. Interesting. I guess my love of drugstores has paid off more than I anticipated.

Oh! One more benefit to drugstore beauty products—coupons! If you’re a good couponer (which I am not), you can get these products for even less money. Which is a huge perk.

I realize that everyone has their own preferred products and I’m curious—what are yours? Can you find them in the drugstore?

  1. i buy my yes to carrots shampoo and the nail polish when they're on sale. although i heard from a blogger that they sell Nicole for OPI at the dollar store!!! that really speaks to me because of my whole cheap bitch thing. our local drugstore has great sales once in a while and a point system so you can get stuff on sale and triple your points.

    1. Kathy- I am a $ store lover, too. And Walgreens gives points and has sales. I have gotten OPI Nicole there for $1.00. I am way cheap on this stuff. I am enamored of glitter right now and have 3 nice glitter pots from the
$ store. Also, Elf is $1.00. Good stuff, too.

    2. Glitter. Is. Awesome! I have many things with glitter and, to avoid looking like a stripper, I've learned a little trick for putting on glitter eye shadow--dip the brush in water before you put it on the eye shadow. It gives the shadow a more creamy base and the glitter doesn't fall.

  2. Yes! I love this. Essie is a great, cheap brand as is ANYTHING Olay. My mom looks incredibly young for her age. She has been using Olay since she was 20. It really is a good brand.

    1. Liz, that is encouraging news. I'm 36 and if I can keep looking this age for while, I'll be quite happy!

  3. Ahhh, makeup. I could go on and on for hours! Drugstore makeup is becoming better quality with each passing day. As I type this, I have a Baby Lips Dr Rescue an inch away from my keyboard! These days I'm diggin the Cover Girl 3-in-1 foundation (may be too think for you, SMD), the new formula Cover Girl Tru Blend foundation and the new Maybeline blush/highlights. Love the Yes To Cucumbers. I work my magic and get stuff for pennies by using coupons. It makes me so happy!

    1. I am a terrible couponer but when I do, the amount of money it saved is so worth it. I need a new foundation and powder; I'll have to look into the Cover Girl.

  4. I love drugstore brands more than expensive ones! I love L'Oreal Voluminous for mascara. I also use L'Oreal for their face lotion which has SPF and skin firming qualities. Covergirl is another big one for me for their True Match foundations and powders. Love the Baby Lips too!

    1. I think Steph recommended that mascara also. I'm due for a replacement. Maybe I'll give it a try, too.

  5. I've turned into a makeup snob as my income has grown, but I love Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner because I never find anything else that lasts (without racoon eyes) as well as it does.

Also love the Neutorgena Eye Makeup Remover.

  7. I love Essie, Baby Lips and Neutrogena make up removers (both eye and the face wipes!) I also like Loreal BB Cream, ELF bronzer (hello $1!) and Cover Girl eye liners! Gotta save where you can!

    1. Oddly, I cannot use any Neutrogena product except the eye makeup remover. In fact, an allergic reaction to Neutrogena lotion is what made me try Olay. But before my skin freaked out on me, I used all the Neutrogena stuff.

  8. I NEED to try Essie, I've been wanting a new color so maybe I'll pick an Essie one this time!

    1. Definitely pick an Essie color. You won't be sorry! I'd love to give you a color recommendation but to pick a favorite is way too difficult. There are so many to choose from, I'm sure you'll find a great one!

  12. Hi, Jana,
Good stuff. Hate to repeat myself, but my favorite "beauty" item is Banana Boat Baby SPF 50. I use it on my face and decolletage daily. I have fair skin and would look like a wrinkled prune without sunblock. I did use Oil of Olay- love that,
but needed a higher SPF for the past 20 years. I used Oil of Olay from age 30 on. Girls, protect your face and decolletage. And be happy. Let your beauty shine through!!

  13. I use Cover Girl Lash Blast. It's hands down my favorite mascara. I have tried more expensive brands and keep coming back to this one. And of course Essie is my fave polish!

    1. Another Cover Girl mascara fan! It's good stuff and I had the same experience. Tried more expensive, kept coming back. No reason to spend more money on an inferior product!

  14. Baby Lips for sure!! I love that stuff!

  17. Somehow I've never tried Baby Lips. I totally agree about using drugstore mascara as opposed to super expensive mascara.

  18. I like Essie nail polish so much better over OPI! It definitely lasts a lot longer and goes on smoother. Great list!

    1. It does last a lot longer, making it an even greater buy. I feel that the variety of colors is greater with Essie as well.

  19. I was a die hard OPI fan and then they introduced the wide brush. If you do not have gorilla nails all is lost. Stephanie guided me kicking and screaming to Essie and all is well in my nail polish world. Thanks for the tips Jana.

    1. I just laughed so hard at "gorilla nails". And I never thought about it before, but you're right. The brushes are really wide.

I'm glad Steph made you an Essie convert. She knows what she's talking about.

  20. I only buy drugstore brand make-up, too. I've bought the more expensive brands and really, they're not that much better for my minimal under-eye concealer + powder + eyeliner (Almay!) + eyeshadow make-up routine.

    1. I don't use an undereye concealer but I'm starting to think I need to. I'll look into the Almay stuff. Thanks for the recommendation!

  21. I love Essie! One of my favs! Thanks for the giveaway, I am giving away a Starbucks Verismo Brewer on my blog. I would love if you would check it out. http://thediaryofarealhousewife.blogspot.com/

  23. I keep hearing that Baby Lips is awesome but the name creeps me out. Is that weird? But I'm glad it works for others!

  24. I LOVE Covergirl. I use Clinique's moisturizing gel because it is the ONLY moisturizer that doesn't make me break out, but I really do want to try Olay.
