Ain't Nothin' But a G Thang

That's G as in Gwen thang, baby. My long-time friend Gwen is blogging the Friday Five today since I'm heading down the shore.  Enjoy and be sure to visit her blog Confessions of a Gila Monster, and also please take up a collection so I can attend the Doo Dah Parade next year.

Hello and Happy Friday, friends of Steph! I'm Gwen from Confessions of a Gila Monster, so you can also call me Gila. I'm excited to step in while Steph is basking in the sun and surf, although I'd also love to be doing that same thing. I live in Columbus, Ohio so a beach/shore trip is a bit of a commitment. However, there are plenty of fun things to do in Columbus, and here are just five of them.

1. ComFest - The official name of this annual weekend is Community Festival and it's been going on since 1972. The overriding theme is "Party with a Purpose." One of the statements of principles is "the basic necessities of life are a right and not a privilege." The festival features lots of local bands and merchants, plus food and beverages, of course.

2. Jeni's Ice Cream - The scoop shop closest to my house often has a line out the door, but it's worth the wait. The signature flavor is Salty Caramel and some of the other unique flavors include Goat Cheese with Cherries, Queen City Cayenne and one of my summer go-tos, Cherry Lambic Sorbet.
3. Doo Dah Parade - Held on July 4th (rain date: July 3rd - haha), this is not your typical parade. Absolutely anyone can march, you just have to show up. The only rules are "no blatant advertising, no full nudity and all politicians must wear a funny hat." This year's highlights included poking fun at Kim Kardashian, a play on "Downton Abbey" and ranting against Ohio's governor.
4. Baseball game at Huntington Park - Columbus may not have a major league baseball team, but we do have a triple-A minor league team, the Columbus Clippers. Several years ago a new downtown stadium was built and it was named Ballpark of the Year by baseballparks.com, beating out all other ballparks in the country. It's a cool place to watch a game, you can get general admission tickets for $6, and the team doesn't suck: the Clippers were back-to-back champions in 2010 and 2011.
5. Schmidt's - Yeah, I just had to include another food item. Schmidt's is a popular restaurant in the German Village area of Columbus and they serve traditional German fare. Not a fan of sausage and sauerkraut? That's OK, it's not my fave either. What I often do is order potato pancakes and then the true star of Schmidt's: the cream puff. This thing is enormous but oh, so delicious.
So if you're ever in Columbus, give me a shout and I'll buy you a scoop of Jeni's ice cream or a beer at Huntington Park. In the meantime you can find me at Confessions of a Gila Monster, or follow me on Twitter and Instagram.

Thanks to Steph, and have a fabulous weekend!
