Gather 'round the table

Before we moved into our house in 2009, we went in search of a proper dining room table. We found one for a steal - $900 for the table and six chairs. My Dad and Carol brought it over on settlement day and Michelle assembled all the chairs. I was being a move-in nazi that day, dispatching teams of people to paint all four upstairs rooms and the library. I didn't even give the table a second glance.

In the days, weeks, months and years that followed, this table has seen many things. It's been a wonderful hostess at the holidays.
1 - My birthday / 2 - St. Patrick's Day / 3 - Easter / 4 - Thanksgiving / 5 - Christmas
It's pulled multiple duties, serving as (1) a Bridesmaid Workshop, (2) a Hen Gathering, (3) a Betting Station on Derby Day, (4) an office during inclement weather days, and (5) a bar, among other things.
It holds its own, but it also holds Bump-Its, magazines, coffee, and flowers.
It's also naturally home to booze and shenanigans during gatherings.
1 - Blackberry Brandy on many occasions, especially New Year's Day / 2 - wine / 3 - near fires on Thanksgiving due to drinking games / 4 - Mr. Chris's endless rewards cards in the midst of a pipe dream of visiting Atlantic City
This table has supported uproarious laughter, caught tears, heard and held secrets, seen plots hatched, watched as agreements were brokered, hosted sing-alongs, enjoyed the birth of new friendships, survived spills and near fires, been danced on top of, witnessed bets and deals, served delicious food, held up under arguments and disagreements, and so much more.

When I think of my home, I think of this table and those of you who have sat around it. And I smile.

  1. i LOVE it when you find a set for a bargain price! looks great :)

  2. I thought this was a great post! I think the same thing about my dining room table. It's also awesome that you got such a deal on it! :)

  3. Very nice! We just found ourselves a new set too, although ours is a small round one. Hopefully it will host more than just my hubby's computer haha.

  4. I love this! The Mr and I eat at our dinning room table at least once a day. But most of the time twice a day. The conversations at that table hold a special place in my heart. And it's where we have all our guests over to eat. I love it when our table is full of love and laughter!!

  5. Aw how sweet. P.S. Love your Queen of Fucking Everything mug.

I'm also slightly jealous that you have taken so many pictures...I need to get on that.

  6. I always say if the furniture could talk...we'd all be in trouble! :) Keep that baby in good shape!

  7. My parents have a table like that! I love it and it really makes our house a home. Love your table!!

  8. My mom recently moved to FL and sold her dining room table that she has had since before I was born. I have not so fond memories of having to dust the table and chair legs and smashing my head every damn time.

Although the table is totally 80s and doesn't really go with my whole design scheme, I was sad it wouldn't fit into our house and I couldn't take it.

  9. You have the most clever ideas for posts!! Love this and all the memories that surround it...especially BUMP IT days!! LOL!

  10. Yes, it is a perfect table! I feel happy about my whole house. I am grateful for everything in it, even tho it is not a decorator's dream.
Especially love our big "Florida" type room we have dubbed the "green room" because of the carpet. All windows, no blinds, high ceiling, makes you feel like you are outdoors & is the perfect place for a nice nap!
The rains have subsided for a bit, very sunny now, but more rain later! Everything is VERY green.
    Carpe diem!
    Love your momma!

  11. Until last year we ate on a computer desk. no lie. When Jeremys parents came to stay with us for 2 weeks I put my foot down.

  12. I want a house (we rent a condo) to house such a table :)

  13. Fabulous table, fabulous memories, fabulous blog, cringed at the bump it.

  14. I love a place that is the focal point of fun! I also love those chairs. My dining table was my father's parents, made my good Pennsylvania Quakers who knows when. It's awesome and I love it...it is currently serving as a place to fold my laundry.
So glad I can catch up on your week today! LOL

  15. Love the table and the chairs, and can't wait to sit around it someday.
