What can I bring?

My personal code states that I can't go to a party without bringing something. I don't want to push food on someone who already has a menu planned out, so I always ask first. The first words out of my mouth when I accept an invitation are, "What can I bring?" If they say nothing, I tuck a bottle of wine in my big ass bag and I'm on my merry way.

If they do want something, I pray it's an appetizer. I love dip, and I love to share my love of dips with others. Gone are the high school and college days, when there was no food to be found in the house let alone set out for a party.

With Memorial Day Weekend ushering in the summer season, here are my top three go to cold dips to serve or bring somewhere. Everyone always loves them and they're easy like Sunday morning. We'll look at some hot dips this fall!

Hoagie Dip
1/2 lb cooked ham, 1/2 lb genoa salami, 3/4 lb american cheese, shredded lettuce, two tomatoes seeded and chopped, one onion chopped, oregano/S&P to taste, and 1-2 cups mayo

The key to good hoagie dip is to cut everything super small. I do the lunch meat and cheese in the food processor (thanks for the tip a few years ago Julie!). Mix it all together and serve with hoagie rolls cut into small pieces.

I usually do the prep the day before, store it all separately, and mix it on the day I'm serving it. 

Corn Dip
Two cans of mexicorn or fiesta corn (in mid-summer I use fresh), a small can of diced green chiles, a bunch of green onion, 2C of shredded cheddar, 1C mayo, 1C sour cream, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp cumin, 1/8 tsp garlic powder. Mix and chill before serving with tortilla chips.

Spinach Dip
10 oz frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry
16 oz sour cream
1C mayo
1 package Knorr Veggie soup, dip & recipe mix
A bunch of green onions, chopped

Combine all, cover and chill for at least 2 hours. Stir before serving with rye bread or Utz special dark pretzels.

  2. LOL, I'm so lame, I usually bring one of the Hormel pepperoini and cheese trays. Or the pre-made dips from Shop Rite. You're an inspiration to us Un-Domestic Diva's! Those dips look amazeballs, you're invited to our next party!!!

  3. i'm the same way. even with my bestie, where i have the freedom to go to his house and rummage through is cabinets (i don't but i could), i always offer to bring something and i think it's rude if you don't (or at least offer!). my go-to is appetizers too or a fruit platter at the very least.

    I learned to stop asking if I can bring something and just ask what I can bring.

    Buffalo chicken wing dip is my go-to dip. I could eat it with a spoon.

  7. I forgot to mention that I went to a party once and a couple brought a bottle of wine that was not opened at the party and then they TOOK IT HOME WITH THEM. Um no. Who does that.

  9. I always ask the same thing when invited to a party. I feel so weird going empty handed. I also love dips too! I love hoagie dip - I never make it, I just love to eat it. I do love making spinach dip. Tom does a great job of squeezing the spinach for me so it's super dry and the dip doesn't get "wet". I've never had that corn dip but that sounds delicious! I will have to try it.

    A summer dip I love to make is one my Mother in law introduced me to, she calls it her "Bean Dip"

    1 can Black Beans (Rinsed with water)
    1 Can Black Eyed Peas (Rinsed with water)
    1 can White Shoepeg Corn or Sweet Corn
    Chopped Onion - I usually do 1/2 of one
    Chopped Peppers - usually 2, but can do one, depending of how much you like
    Ken's Northern Lite Italian Dressing or if you have your own favorite Italian, that's fine!

    Mix and chill then serve with tortilla chips

  12. My go-to summer dish is a taco-ish dip. Cream cheese, sour cream, chili powder, cumin, cayenne, salsa. Put in a flat dish and cover with shredded cheese (you can also add tomatoes, olives, whatever on top, but I don't).

  14. Our go-to is usually spinach/artichoke dip. Or pulled pork in the crockpot. I hate showing up empty-handed!

  15. We're we seperated at birth? Cause, I'm the exact same way. I refuse to go to a party or get together empty handed. Love the recipes! Can't wait to try them out!

  16. Perfect timing! Love all of those dips. The good thing about cold dips is no crock pot, just sit them in a bowl of ice. I do like that bruschetta that we had here on Mother's day.

  21. I love spinach dip, but I add water chestnuts. Love summer parties....especially the impromptu parties!
