the Mother's Day weekend that was

Friday night I was led into a nightmare: the annual neighborhood carnival. Surrounded by carnies.  I mean, come on.
+
You know who had the best night ever? This guy. MFD loves the carnival.
+
I also made this cake. So dense and rich and delicious. And whoa nelly chocolatey. MFD is right - this is a milk cake. You need a glass of milk to get into this. It's made from scratch and contains shredded zucchini and Greek yogurt. And it's topped with an insanely good ganache.
+
Saturday morning I was at my Dad & Carol's early to see Carol for Mother's Day. I made her take this photo even though she was not dressed for the day. She still looks lovely!
+
Breakfast at The Langhorne Cafe with my Boston-based BFF Kim to toast happiness over eggs.
+
Weekly food prep. Check back tomorrow for a post devoted entirely to that.
+
Gatsby! I loved the movie, even though it missed the mark on the essential theme of the book and romanticized both the relationship between Daisy and Gatsby and Daisy herself. It made her out to be much more likeable than she is. I hate Daisy if you couldn't tell. I didn't like some of the gimmicks of this version, but overall I enjoyed it a lot. I thought the music, while modern, fit well against the 1920s backdrop. And Leo played a perfectly nuanced Gatsby. If you are a fan of the book and don't mind that the movie will be slow just like the book is, I say go see it, old sport.
+
A simple and delicious dinner: steamed broccoli; fingerling potatoes brought to a boil, simmered until just done, sliced in half and sprinkled with sea salt; roasted garlic aoli; and london broil. Can I recommend Colavita olive oil to anyone who is looking to step theirs up? It's excellent. And Lydia Bastianich uses it so it has to be awesome.
+
What a glorious symphony of a sunset.
+
Sleepy boys all around.
+
Sunday late morning visit with MFD's parents for Mother's Day.
+
Sun dappled dog walk, with break times for Geege to do his rolling around.
+
Family, food, drink, sunshine, celebrating Rich's 60th birthday and Mom's day for my mom and Aubrey's mom. Love this pic of me, Mom and my brothers. Thanks for taking it Debbie!

the weekend that was

It went too fast, like it always does. Four day week for me - I'm off on Wednesday for MFD's surgery. He has to get the screws out of his ankle, a same day in and out procedure. Then full speed ahead to physical therapy!

Have a good one kids. Check here tomorrow for a peek into how I do weekly food prep.

  1. Looks like you had a full weekend too! :) I'm jealous of your funnel cake. That's my favorite thing to eat at fairs/carnivals.

  3. Oh god, you didn't actually go on any of the rides did you?!?! I can't believe my parents let me go on those rides as a kid. I mean they COME APART every week and get put back together by CARNIES. Horrifying.

    That cake looks amazing.

  10. How freaking stoked does MFD look at that carnival?!? Like there weren't even midgets in sight.

I can't get enough of the Gatsby soundtrack. I desperately need to see the movie. And Ironman3. And now Star Trek. There isn't enough time!

    Send me that cake, k?

  12. Getting to this late. #ROOTCANAL
Thank God for dental insurance and my overall superb, good health. Teeth are my only cross to bear.
OMG, the look on Sean's face when Mike Doyle told him there was zucchini in that wonderful chocolate cake. Very good. The ganache is to die for. I hope my spelling is correct.
Green lights of healing to you and thanks for cutting off the bottom of that picture. #DIDNTHOLDMYSTOMACHIN
LOVELY day and wonderful gifts for me! All my chickens in the nest is the best gift ever anyway.

How are you doing with your Pantry Challenge? Not sure if I saw an update.
So far we're on day 12 and have only purchased veggies, milk, and bread. No staples at all. We've had some great meals and are going strong! Keep us posted, Steph.

  18. I really love carnivals/festivals. I really can't wait until all the summer festivals start happening.

Confession: I have never read Great Gatsby. Ever.

  19. LOVED Gatsby - I figured it was mostly because I didn't remember the book all that well!

  20. Yay for Boston friend!! :)

I really want to see Gatsby. I don't remember the book at all since I ready it in high school like 100 years ago.

    Those sunsets = gorgeous.

And that cake. Yum! Even w/ the veggies in it I think it looks and sounds so good.

  22. That cake looks awesome and made me thirsty for milk. I don't even like milk! You always have the best weekends.

I didn't like Daisy in the book either. She was annoying and boring. But loved her in the movie. Also, did Gatsby really say "old sport" that many times in the book? Haha!

I hope surgery and recovery go well!

  23. Haha were there really carnies there? Did they smell like cabbage?!

And now I need some funnel cake...

    Thanks for linking up!
